The effect of B2O3 fluxing on the glass-forming ability (GFA), the structure and the soft magnetic properties of Fe (-Co)-B-Si-Nb bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) has been investigated. The large Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb BMG specimens with diameters up to 7.7 mm, which is approximately 1.5 times as large as that of the maximum diameter of the copper mold cast one (= 5 mm), were prepared by the fluxing and water quenching. Thus the GFA of the Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb BMG are improved by the fluxing. It was confirmed that the soft magnetic properties of the Fe-Co-B-Si-Nb BMG are also improved by the fluxing. On the other hand, it was found for the Co-free Fe-B-Si-Nb BMG that the B2O3 fluxing promotes the precipitation of the α-Fe (-Si) and Fe2B phases in the central region of the specimens; i.e., the GFA of the Fe-B-Si-Nb BMG is decreased by the fluxing. The Fe-B-Si-Nb BMG specimens show a flat hysteresis loop, indicating a good linear relationship between the magnetic induction and the applied magnetic field. These results of the Fe-B-Si-Nb BMG show that it is possible to develop a new soft magnetic material that exhibits constant permeability, which is necessary for producing inductors and choke coils.

The thermal stability, glass-forming ability, soft-magnetic properties and mechanical properties of Co46Fe19+xB22.5Si5.5Nb7–x (x=0–2) bulk metallic glasses were investigated. The 5.5 at% Nb addition was found to be effective in approaching alloy to a eutectic point, resulting in an increase in glass-forming ability. By copper mold casting, bulk metallic glass rods with diameters up to 5 mm were produced. Except for high glass-forming ability, the bulk metallic glasses also exhibit good soft-magnetic properties, i.e., low coercive force of 1.34–2.14 A/m, high effective permeability at 1 kHz of 2.26–3.06×104, and high fractures strength (σf) of 4010–4460 MPa. This Co-based bulk metallic glass system with high strengths and excellent soft-magnetic properties is promising for future applications as a new functional material.

Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) alloys (Fe71.2B24Y4.8)96Nb4-xZrx (x = 1-4 at.%) with a maximum diameter of 5 mm were synthesized with low purity materials by copper mold casting technique. The effect of Zr substitution for Nb on the structure, thermal stability and the magnetic properties has been studied. It was found that the substitution of an appropriate amount of Zr for Nb can improve the glass forming ability. The wide supercooled liquid region ∆Tx (exceeding 123 K) and a high Tg (exceeding 868 K) demonstrated a high thermal stability of the present Fe-based BMGs. In addition, these BMGs also exhibit good soft magnetic properties with relatively high saturation magnetization of 88 emu/g, and low coercivity of 20 Oe.
