The aim of this paper is to develop a simplified method for analysis of free vibration of floor system consisting of continuous steel plate and steel frame in plane to reinforce it. The study of such orthotropic system is of practical interest and aimed at small businesses, which are not able to obtain expensive programs for performing such calculations.

Full-scale tests on a one-story steel frame structure with a typical precast cladding system using ambient and free vibration methods are described in detail. The cladding system is primarily composed of ALC (Autoclaved Lightweight Concrete) external wall cladding panels, gypsum plasterboard interior linings, and window glazing systems. Ten test cases including the bare steel frame and the steel frame with addition of different parts of the precast cladding system are prepared for detailed investigations. The amplitude-dependent dynamic characteristics of the test cases including natural frequencies and damping ratios determined from the tests are presented. The effects of the ALC external wall cladding panels, the gypsum plasterboard interior linings, and the window glazing systems on the stiffness and structural damping of the steel frame are discussed in detail. The effect of the precast cladding systems on the amplitude dependency of the dynamic characteristics and the tendencies of the dynamic parameters with respect to the structural response amplitude are investigated over a wide range. Furthermore, results estimated from the ambient vibration method are compared with those from the free vibration tests to evaluate the feasibility of the ambient vibration method.

In the case of protection of transportation systems, the optimization of the shield is of practical interest to reduce the weight of such components and thus increase the payload or reduce the fuel consumption. As far as metal shields are concerned, some investigations based on numerical simulations showed that a multi-layered configuration made of layers of different metals could be a promising solution to reduce the weight of the shield. However, only a few experimental studies on this subject are available. The aim of this study is therefore to discuss whether or not a monolithic shield can be substituted by a double-layered configuration manufactured from two different metals and if such a configuration can guarantee the same perforation resistance at a lower weight. In order to answer this question, the performance of a ballistic shield constituted of a layer of high-strength steel and a layer of an aluminum alloy impacted by an armor piercing projectile was investigated in experimental tests. Furthermore, an axisymmetric finite element model was developed. The effect of the strain rate hardening parameter C and the thermal softening parameter m of the Johnson–Cook constitutive model was investigated. The numerical model was used to understand the perforation process and the energy dissipation mechanism inside the target. It was found that if the high-strength steel plate is used as a front layer, the specific ballistic energy increases by 54% with respect to the monolithic high-strength steel plate. On the other hand, the specific ballistic energy decreases if the aluminum plate is used as the front layer.

The present paper deals with free vibration of multiple cracked continuous beams with intermediate rigid supports. A simplified method is proposed to obtain general solution of free vibration in cracked beam with intermediate supports that is then used for natural frequency analysis of the beam in dependence upon cracks and support locations. Numerical results show that the support location or ratio of span lengths in combination with cracks makes a significant effect on eigenfrequency spectrum of beam. The discovered effects of support locations on eigenfrequency spectrum of cracked continuous beam are useful for detecting not only cracks but also positions of vanishing deflection on the beam.

The seismic behavior factor of moment resisting steel frame-steel plate shear wall under two different horizontal loading patterns was investigated according to the maximum inter-story drift ratio reaching 1/50. It could be achieved with the same calculated standard as the foreign codes and the determined behavior factor was compared with foreign research results. The method using the software SAP2000 to calculate seismic behavior factor according to the maximum inter-story drift ratio reaching 1/50 was presented and the specific example was used to elaborate the operating process. The seismic behavior factor R, the overstrength factor RΩ and the ductility reduction factor Rμ of 10-storey 3-span steel frame-steel plate shear wall under the inverted triangle load are respectively 6.07, 2.96 and 2.05. while they are respectively 7.2, 3.37 and 2.13 under the uniform load. Finally, it can be concluded that the economic and reasonable design goals are achieved for this structure.
