Review and identification keys to the ichneumonid parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) of Nearctic Choristoneura species (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

AbstractWasps of the family Ichneumonidae recorded as parasitoids of Choristoneura Lederer (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) in North America are summarized. A total of 113 species in 45 genera and 11 subfamilies have been reliably reared from 10 species of Nearctic Choristoneura. Twenty-one more species are listed as possible parasitoids of Nearctic Choristoneura, based on rearings from Palearctic Choristoneura species and (or) limited introductions to North America. Well-illustrated identification keys are provided to the subfamilies, all genera, and species of 39 of the genera. The species of Choristoneura used as hosts by the 113 ichneumonid species are tabulated, as well as the wasps’ geographic ranges. The biological characteristics of the ichneumonid subfamilies parasitizing Choristoneura spp. are described and compared. Erroneous Choristoneura host records and synonyms for all ichneumonid taxa previously recorded from Nearctic Choristoneura spp. are given. Phaeogenes gaspesianus Provancher is moved to Dirophanes Förster, forming D. gaspesianus (Provancher) comb. nov. New host records are Phaeogenes cacoeciae Viereck and Scambus hispae (Harris) on C. rosaceana (Harris), D. gaspesianus and Pimpla disparis Viereck on C. fumiferana (Clemens) (P. disparis having been introduced to New Brunswick to control the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.)), and Exochus turgidus Holmgren on C. occidentalis Freeman.

Coprinus phaeosporus Karst., Hypholoma subericaceum (Fr.) Kühner, Mycena tubarioides (Maire) Kühner, and Stropharia pseudocyanea (Desm.) comb. nov. are documented from North America for the first time. Agaricus albocyaneus Desm. ex Fr. is shown to be an error for A. pseudocyaneus Desm. Agrocybe paludosa (Lange) Kühner & Romagnesi, Coprinus martinii Favre ex Orton and C. subimpatiens Lange & Smith are reported from Canada. Range extensions or new host records are noted for Coprinus stercoreus Fr., C. urticicola (Berk. & Br.) Buller, Marasmius limosus Quél., Melanotus caricicola (Orton) Guz., Mycena juncicola (Fr.) Gillet, Pholiota graminis (Quél.) Singer, and Resinomycena saccharifera (Berk. & Br.) comb. nov. Resinomycena kalalochensis subsp. saccharifera in Europe and subsp. kalalochensis (Smith) comb. nov. in western North America are vicariant taxa.

One hundred and seventy-five (94 surf, 36 white-winged, and 45 black) scoters obtained from four localities (New Brunswick, British Columbia, Labrador, and Norway) in 1973–1978 were examined for metazoan parasites, with 91% (159 birds: 86 surf, 33 white-winged, and 40 black scoters) being infected. Approximately 45 species of parasites, excluding cestodes, were found (36 from the surf, 25 from the white-winged, and 27 from the black), including 39 which were new host records. Quantitative data, including prevalence and intensity of infection, are given for each helminth and host. Comparisons between different ages and sexes are made, and between different host species. Individual species of parasites are discussed with regard to topics such as location within host. Comments are made on the geographical distribution of the parasites found and their life cycles, where known (seven cycle through the marine ecosystem, seven through freshwater, four through either system, and one through a dipteran).

Uteriporus vulgaris Bergendal, 1890, a marine triclad of the family Uteriporidae, is recorded from New Brunswick and the Gaspé coast, Quebec. These are the first records of this species, genus, and family in North America. A brief description of the material is given.

AbstractThe cephalic end of the type species of pharyngodonid genera Travnema and Cosmoxynemoides, T. travnema Pereira, 1938 and C. aguirrei Travassos, 1949, parasites of Brazilian freshwater fishes, was studied by scanning electron microscopy. The mouth aperture of Travnema was found to be circular, surrounded by four cephalic papillae and two lateral amphids and the cuticle of the cephalic end had a conspicuous dense sculpture. On the other hand, the mouth aperture of Cosmoxynemoides was triangular, surrounded by three lip-like elevations covering the whole surface of the relatively flat cephalic extremity, each with two inner lobes separated one from another by a short groove; the lip-like elevations bore four medium-sized, kidney-shaped cephalic papillae and two minute amphids (two papillae on the dorsal elevation and one papilla and one amphid on each of two ventrolateral elevations); the cuticle of the cephalic end was smooth. Both species were noted for the absence of oral lamellae and the presence of lateral alae. Both genera are listed in the family Pharyngodonidae but Travnema (and also Hakynema), due to its morphological peculiarities, is considered to represent a distinct subfamily Travnematinae within the Pharyngodonidae. The finding of both T. travnema and C. aguirrei in the characid fish Astyanax bimaculatus lacustris represents new host records.

AbstractIn this paper, we review the pteronyssid feather mites of the genera Pteronyssus Robin, Scutulanyssus Mironov, and Stenopteronyssus Faccini and Atyeo found in the course of an investigation into ectoparasites of birds in Canada. Five new species of feather mites are described: Pteronyssus sphyrapicinussp. nov. from the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Sphyrapicus varius (L.); Stenopteronyssus proctoraesp. nov. from the Northern Flicker, Colaptes auratus (L.); Scutulanyssus progneisp. nov. and Scutulanyssus subissp. nov. from the Purple Martin, Progne subis (L.); and Scutulanyssus petrochelidonissp. nov. from the Cliff Swallow, Petrochelidon pyrrhonota (Vieillot). New host records are provided for Pteronyssus picoides Černy and Schumilo from the Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens (L.), and for Scutulanyssus obscurus (Berlese) from the Cliff Swallow; Pteronyssus brevipes Berlese and Scutulanyssus hirundicolus Mironov are formally recorded in North America for the first time; and Pteronyssus centurus McDaniel and Price is reported for the first time in Canada, from Lewis' Woodpecker, Melanerpes lewis (Gray). Scutulanyssus tyrrelli (Canestrini) is reported for the first time in Manitoba from the Tree Swallow, Tachycineta bicolor (Vieillot). Keys are provided for all species of Pteronyssus and Scutulanyssus found in North America.

Three species of digenetic trematodes are recorded from the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, 1758, namely Podocotyle atomon (Rudolphi, 1802), Brachyphallus crenatus (Rudolphi, 1802), and Lecithaster gibbosus (Rudolphi, 1802). The latter two species are new host records for North America.

During the period March 1976 to November 1977, 377 mammals of the family Sciuridae (Rodentia) were collected in Saskatchewan and examined for helminths. Species and numbers of each were as follows: Spermophilus richardsonii (Sabine), 209; Spermophilus franklinii (Sabine), 46; Spermophilus tridecemlineatus (Mitchill), 31; Tamiasciurus hudsonicus (A. H. Howell), 64; Glaucomys sabrinus (Shaw), 12; Eutamias minimus (J. A. Allen), 11; and Marmota monax (Erxleben), 4.Ten species of cestodes, 2 species of trematodes, 11 species of nematodes, and 1 acanthocephalan were represented in the collections made. New host records and (or) geographic range extensions were indicated for 10 species of helminths.In addition to taxonomic considerations of the helminths, attention has been given to parasite–host relationships involving ground squirrels. In general, male Spermophilus spp. were significantly more commonly infected than were females, and older squirrels were significantly more commonly infected than were younger ones. However, adult squirrels did not have significantly more worms than did juveniles.

AbstractA sample of 101 specimens of the unisexual whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus nativo (Squamata; Teiidae) from a coastal site in Bahia State, Brazil were examined for the presence of endoparasites. Of these, 35 (34.7%) harboured helminths. Six helminth species were recovered from C. nativo, including five nematodes (Physaloptera retusa, Physalopteroides venancioi, Subulura lacertilia, Skrjabinelazia intermedia and Parapharyngodon sp., and one cestode (Oochoristica ameivae), all representing new host records. Most lizards were infected by a single species of helminth and none by more than three. Infection rates were neither significantly influenced by host body size nor by environmental factors. The results are compared with data from studies on other whiptail species in both South and North America.
