The Usage of the Terms Mandibular Canal, Inferior Alveolar Canal, and Inferior Dental Canal in the Academia: A Bibliometric Analysis

Conventional radiographs provide only a 2 dimensional view of complicated three dimensional structures. The proximity, angulations, location of impacted teeth, related to the IAN can be adequately determined using conventional 2-D periodical and panoramic radiographs. Computed tomography necessitates the administration of a high dose radiation, especially when the slice width is shortened to increased cost are the negative aspects of computed tomography compared with conventional imaging. Cone beam computed tomographies are becoming more readily available for use in maxilla facial applications. CBCT provides better image quality of teeth and their surrounding structures, compared with conventional CT and offers high spatial resolution. CBCT seems to be more accurate data about inferior alveolar canal. Hence the present study was undertaken to assess and select roots of third molar with close proximity to inferior dental canal in panoramic radiograph having radiographic signs of darkening of root, disruption of canal cortex and canal deviation and to evaluate the same roots with CBCT using trans axial and coronal sections which is angulated parallel to long axis to tooth, axial and coronal sections for proximity of inferior dental canal with the apices of third molar root. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) is a lymphoproliferative disorder, from a subgroup of heterogeneous hematologic malignancies; the term “extranodal” refers to malignant involvement of tissues other than lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, pharyngeal lymphatic ring, or thymus. Only 0.6% of all NHL are at mandible alone, and it may involve the inferior alveolar canal. We describe a case of bilateral enlargement of the mandibular canal without symptomatology, which was shown in a panoramic radiograph and cone beam computed tomography in a rehabilitation routine exam, as an early sign of primary extranodal NHL.

AIM: The present study aimed at evaluating the role of mental foramen and mandibular canal in gender determination using CBCT.METHODOLOGY: A total number of 73 volumes of CBCT of the mandible was evaluated. Four measurements were used to assess the bucco-lingual and supero-inferior location of mandibular canal and the supero-inferior location of mental foramen was determined using two measurements on both right and left sides of the mandible. Inter and intra-observer variability was analyzed with help of t-test.RESULTS: Good intra-observer and inter-observer agreement was noted with regard to all the six measurements. The mean of all the measurements of mental nerve foramen and mandibular canal was found to be higher in males than females, however, significant difference was noted with regard to Superior Mental foramen (SMeF) and Superior Inferior Alveolar Canal (SMC) (p=0.037, p<0.001 respectively) on the right side and SIAC and Inferior Inferior Alveolar Canal (IIAC), (p=0.015, p=0.046 respectively) on the left side.CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that SMeF, SIAC and IIAC may be used for gender determination. Further, either side of mandible can be used for this purpose. CBCT was found to be a useful modality in this study for sexual dimorphism.
