: Absence seizure is a type of brain disorder in which subject get into sudden lapses in attention. Which means sudden change in brain stimulation. Most of this type of disorder is widely found in children’s (5-18 years). These Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are captured with long term monitoring system and are analyzed individually. In this paper, a Convolutional Neural Network to extract single channel EEG seizure features like Power, log sum of wavelet transform, cross correlation, and mean phase variance of each frame in a windows are extracted after pre-processing and classify them into normal or absence seizure class, is proposed as an empowerment of monitoring system by automatic detection of absence seizure. The training data is collected from the normal and absence seizure subjects in the form of Electroencephalogram. The objective is to perform automatic detection of absence seizure using single channel electroencephalogram signal as input. Here the data is used to train the proposed Convolutional Neural Network to extract and classify absence seizure. The Convolutional Neural Network consist of three layers 1] convolutional layer – which extract the features in the form of vector 2] Pooling layer – the dimensionality of output from convolutional layer is reduced and 3] Fully connected layer–the activation function called soft-max is used to find the probability distribution of output class. This paper goes through the automatic detection of absence seizure in detail and provide the comparative analysis of classification between Support Vector Machine and Convolutional Neural Network. The proposed approach outperforms the performance of Support Vector Machine by 80% in automatic detection of absence seizure and validated using confusion matrix.

High density electrocorticography (ECoG)-based microelectrode arrays (MEAs) are fabricated to timely record the neural activities to provide the fundamental understanding in neuroscience and biomedical engineering. This paper aims to introduce a device-based concept and wafer-scale fabrication process for MEAs. Flexible and biocompatible polyimide is applied on MEAs to bear all possible stress and strain. Detailed fabrication key techniques, including surface treatment, polyimide stability measurement, evaporation process, and curing conditions, have been discussed thoroughly. Moreover, the fabricated polyimide-based MEAs are surface-mounted on well-packaged printed circuit boards (PCBs) via a slot-type connector without any additional wire bonding to make the signal recording process easier. An absence seizure was recorded during the in vivo test, which shows the availability of signal recording based on the presented MEAs. The proposed MEAs could be remained at the skull, while the connector and PCBs can be disassembled apart. Therefore, the testing sample will get less suffering. To verify the robustness of the fabricated MEAs, the impedance properties were characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The measured results indicate an average impedance of 12.3 ± 0.675 kΩ at 1 kHz. In total, 10 groups of MEAs were sample tested, and over 90% of the total 60 channels per 1-MEAs operated efficiently.

Abstract Introduction Resilience, a life-long trait, corresponds to the ability to bounce back from adversity. What factors influence resilience is unclear. Here we describe a cohort of individuals with familial natural short sleep (FNSS). Four genes in five families have been identified that confer this trait, DEC2, NPSR1, GRM1 and ADRB1. Individuals in this cohort share a resilience phenotype alongside this decreased sleep need. Methods Those reporting less than 6.5 hours of sleep when allowed to sleep ad libitum without any complaints regarding overnight sleep or daytime sleepiness were then interviewed to determine FNSS affected status from 2009 to 2020. Data on mood, depression, sleepiness and resilience were collected from participants and family members enrolled in the FNSS study. Results 163 individuals meeting criteria for FNSS were enrolled. Compared to 47 unaffected family members, they had significantly shorter sleep duration as measured by self report and actigraphy, significantly more resilience as measured by the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, significantly less sleepiness as measured by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and significantly fewer symptoms of depression as measured by the Beck Depression Inventory. Conclusion FNSS individuals appear to have a distinct phenotype including shorter sleep duration, greater resilience, less subjective sleepiness, and fewer symptoms of depression. Better understanding the genetics and characteristics of those with familial natural short sleep may provide insight into mechanisms of both restorative sleep and resilience. We studied four children with diagnosis of absence seizures (generalized primary epilepsy), and with a generalized delta activity on the EEG during clinical attacks provoked by hyperventilation. The lack of ictal generalized spike-and-wave discharges with a frequency of 3 Hz in our patients, makes this an atypical pattern. All children had complete control of their seizures and disappearance of the EEG changes with valproate. We concluded that generalized delta activity observed on EEG during the hyperventilation in children should not always be considered as a normal finding for age, since it could be an ictal event of an absence seizure.
