Use of planting depth and budding height to modify vigour control of Ottawa 3 apple rootstock

The dwarfing apple rootstock Ottawa 3 (O.3) produces trees slightly too large for high density plantings on fertile soils, but it is more cold hardy and better anchored than Malling 9. Our objective was to reduce the vigour of trees on O.3 by budding scions higher or planting the trees more shallowly. Summerland McIntosh was budded at 15 cm onto O.3 and planted such that 6 to 14 cm of the rootstock shank was above ground. Planting depth did not affect tree size, yield or yield efficiency. Increasing budding height from 5 to 25 cm increased vigour control, yield efficiency and the production of root suckers on O.3. Higher budding may be an effective way to reduce the vigour of trees on O.3 in areas where the greater root suckering is not a fireblight hazard. Tree size, cumulative yield, yield efficiency and anchorage of 6 micropropagated (MP) apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) cultivars were determined in 1991 after 5 years of production, as compared with trees on seedling (sdlg) or M 7a roots. Trees were planted in 1984, with crops harvested from 1987 through 1991. Trees were generally smallest (trunk cross-sectional area) on M 7a and were largest with 4 cultivars (`Delicious', `Jonathan', `Rome', `Spartan') when micropropagated. `Golden Delicious' (GD) was largest on sdlg. Cumulative yield was affected by a scion × rootstock interaction, with few trends in scion or rootstock effects. Mean cumulative yield was 84 kg tree-1, 71 and 58 for M 7a, MP and sdlg, respectively. Yield efficiency was also affected by a scion × rootstock interaction. In 1991, mean yield efficiency was 0.5 kg cm-2 for sdlg and MP trees, but was 1.05 for M 7a. Efficiency on M 7a was superior to other rootstocks with all scions except `GD', while sdlg and MP trees were statistically similar with all scions. All trees leaned in response to prevailing westerly winds, with trees on sdlg tending to be more upright than MP or M 7a trees.

Abstract Banding with Velcro™ of new shoot growth in moderately difficult-to-root apple rootstock MM.106 (Malus domestica Borkh.) for 7 days prior to taking cuttings, and treatment of cuttings with 500 to 2000 ppm indolebutyric acid (IBA) increased both percent rooting and root number. Banding, however, did not influence the rooting of easy-to-root Franklinia alatamaha Marsh. IBA at 0 to 1000 ppm induced a logarithmic increase in percent rooting of cuttings of MM.106 and root number of cuttings of Franklinia; but, higher levels of IBA reduced both. Banding prevented the rooting inhibition found at high concentrations of IBA in cuttings of MM.106, while simultaneously stimulating lateral budbreak and greater root number. Stem banding improved the establishment of cuttings treated with 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm IBA. Without banding, establishment of these cuttings was markedly decreased.

Silken is a new early-maturing apple cultivar ripening in the same season as McIntosh with a unique creamy skin colour. It is crisper and sweeter, and possesses a higher aromatic intensity than Royal Gala or McIntosh. In preference tests, it has been rated equal to Gala and better than McIntosh in Flavour and texture. Soil was sampled in 20 high-density apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) orchards which had generally been NP-fertigated using drip irrigation for the 2–5 yr since their establishment. Soil chemical changes including decreases in pH, extractable Ca, Mg, K, S and B and increases in extractable Cu, Mn and Fe were measurable, often within 2 yr. Leaf nutrient concentrations below deficiency levels were widespread for B and Zn and in a few cases, also occurred for Mg and K. The cultivars, Jonathan, Delicious and Granny Smith apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees on MM.106, Northern Spy, Seedling and MM.102 rootstocks were trained as-vase, central leader, palmette and Hawkes Bay multi-leade; systems for 18 years. Rootstock significantly affected tree size, and there were interactions of rootstock with training systems or cultivars. There was also an interaction between training ' systems and cultivars. In the early years, while the training systems were being established, fruit yield was inversely related to the severity of the pruning; central leader- and palmette-trained trees had higher yields and tree efficiency than Hawkes Bay trees whose yields and tree efficiency were higher than vase trees. When yields reached maximum and the training systems became well established (after about 8 years of cropping), the total annual yield and tree efficiency per tree of individual training systems within a cultivar and rootstock differed only slightly. Cumulative yields of central leader, palmette and Hawkes Bay were higher than vase in the early years of all training systems and cultivars, while tree size was often smaller. In the latter years, cumulative yields of the central leader, palmette and Hawkes Bay systems remained slightly higher than vase, except with the less vigorous Jonathan and Granny Smith/ MM.102 combinations where yields were similar.
