AbstractThe Bishop-Phelps theorem guarantees the existence of support points and support functionals for a nonempty closed convex subset of a Banach space; equivalently, it guarantees the existence of subdifferentials and points of subdifferentiability of a proper lower semicontinuous convex function on a Banach space. In this note we show that most of these results cannot be extended to pairs of convex sets or functions, even in Hilbert space. For instance, two proper lower semicontinuous convex functions need not have a common point of subdifferentiability nor need they have a subdifferential in common. Negative answers are also obtained to certain questions concerning density of support points for the closed sum of two convex subsets of Hilbert space.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of approximating zero points of accretive operators. We introduce and analysis Mann-type iterative algorithm with errors and Halpern-type iterative algorithms with errors. Weak and strong convergence theorems are established in a real Banach space. As applications, we consider the problem of approximating a minimizer of a proper lower semicontinuous convex function in a real Hilbert space

The purpose of this paper is to study modified Halpern type and Ishikawa type iteration for a semigroup of relatively nonexpansive mappingsI={T(s):s∈S}on a nonempty closed convex subsetCof a Banach space with respect to a sequence of asymptotically left invariant means{μn}defined on an appropriate invariant subspace ofl∞(S), whereSis a semigroup. We prove that, given some mild conditions, we can generate iterative sequences which converge strongly to a common element of the set of fixed pointsF(I), whereF(I)=⋂{F(T(s)):s∈S}.

We first present a generalization of ω⁎-Gâteaux differentiability theorems of Lipschitz mappings from open sets to those closed convex sets admitting nonsupport points and then show that every nonempty bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space has the fixed point property for isometries if it Lipschitz embeds into a super reflexive space. With the application of Baudier-Lancien-Schlumprecht’s theorem, we finally show that every nonempty bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space has the fixed point property for continuous affine mappings if it uniformly embeds into the Tsirelson space T⁎.

SupposeCis a nonempty closed convex subset of real Hilbert spaceH. LetT:C→Hbe a nonexpansive non-self-mapping andPis the nearest point projection ofHontoC. In this paper, we study the convergence of the sequences{xn},{yn},{zn}satisfyingxn=(1−αn)u+αnT[(1−βn)xn+βnTxn],yn=(1−αn)u+αnPT[(1−βn)yn+βnPTyn], andzn=P[(1−αn)u+αnTP[(1−βn)zn+βnTzn]], where{αn}⊆(0,1),0≤βn≤β<1andαn→1asn→∞. Our results extend and improve the recent ones announced by Xu and Yin, and many others.

Suppose thatCis a nonempty closed convex subset of a real uniformly convex Banach spaceX. LetT:C→Cbe an asymptotically quasi-nonexpansive mapping. In this paper, we introduce the three-step iterative scheme for such map with error members. Moreover, we prove that ifTis uniformlyL-Lipschitzian and completely continuous, then the iterative scheme converges strongly to some fixed point ofT.

This paper is devoted to the study of the metric projection onto a nonempty closed convex subset of a general Banach space. Thanks to a systematic use of semi-inner products and duality mappings, characterizations of the metric projection are given. Applications to decompositions of Banach spaces along convex cones and variational inequalities are presented.

The numerical range W(T) of a bounded linear operator T on a Hilbert space H is defined byW(T) is always a convex subset of the plane [1] and clearly W(T) is bounded since it is contained in the ball of radius ‖T‖ about the origin. Which non-empty convex bounded subsets of the plane are the numerical range of an operator? The theorem we prove below shows that every non-empty convex bounded subset of the plane is W(T) for some T.

AbstractWe study, in a Hilbert framework, some abstract parabolic variational inequalities, governed by reflecting subgradients with multiplicative perturbation, of the following type:y´(t)+ Ay(t)+0.t Θ(t,y(t)) ∂φ(y(t))∋f(t,y(t)),y(0) = ywhere A is a linear self-adjoint operator, ∂φ is the subdifferential operator of a proper lower semicontinuous convex function φ defined on a suitable Hilbert space, and Θ is the perturbing term which acts on the set of reflecting directions, destroying the maximal monotony of the multivalued term. We provide the existence of a solution for the above Cauchy problem. Our evolution equation is accompanied by examples which aim to (systems of) PDEs with perturbed reflection.

LetKbe a nonempty closed convex subset of a real Banach spaceE, letS:K→Kbe nonexpansive, and let  T:K→Kbe Lipschitz strongly pseudocontractive mappings such thatp∈FS∩FT=x∈K:Sx=Tx=xandx-Sy≤Sx-Sy and x-Ty≤Tx-Tyfor allx, y∈K. Letβnbe a sequence in0, 1satisfying (i)∑n=1∞βn=∞; (ii)limn→∞⁡βn=0.For arbitraryx0∈K, letxnbe a sequence iteratively defined byxn=Syn, yn=1-βnxn-1+βnTxn, n≥1.Then the sequencexnconverges strongly to a common fixed pointpofSandT.

Abstract It has been a long-standing problem posed by the first author in a conference in Marseille in 1990 to characterize semitopological semigroups which have common fixed point property when acting on a nonempty weak* compact convex subset of a dual Banach space as weak* continuous and norm nonexpansive mappings. Our investigation in the paper centers around this problem. Our main results rely on the well-known Ky Fan’s inequality for convex functions.
