Correlation methods are indispensable in the study of the linear relationship between two variables. However, many researchers often adopt inappropriate correlation methods in the study of linear relationships which usually leads to unreliable results. Recurrently, most researchers ignorantly employ the Pearson method in a dataset that contained outliers, instead of more appropriate correlation methods such as Spearman, Kendall Tau, Median and Quadrant which might be suitable in the calculation of correlation coefficient in the presence of influential outliers. It is noted that the accuracy of estimation of correlation coefficients under outliers has been a long-standing problem for methodological researchers. This is due to low knowledge of correlation methods and their assumptions which have led to inappropriate application of correlation methods in research analysis. Five different methods of estimating correlation coefficients in the presence of influential outlier (contaminated data) were considered: Pearson Correlation Coefficient, Spearman Correlation Coefficient, Kendall Tau Correlation Coefficient, Median Correlation Coefficient and Quadrant Correlation Coefficient.

Language is the main means of communication used by human. In various situations, the same word can mean differently based on the usage of the word in a particular sentence which is challenging for a computer to understand as level of human. Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD), which aims to identify correct sense of a given ambiguity word, is a long-standing problem in natural language processing (NLP). As the major aim of WSD is to accurately understand the sense of a word in particular context, can be used for the correct labeling of words in natural language applications. In this paper, I propose a normalized statistical algorithm that performs the task of WSD for Afaan Oromo language despite morphological analysis The propose algorithm has the power to discriminate ambiguous word’s sense without windows size consideration, without predefined rule and without utilize annotated dataset for training which minimize a challenge of under resource languages. The proposed system tested on 249 sentences with precision, recall, and F-measure. The overall effectiveness of the system is 80.76% in F-measure, which implies that the proposed system is promising on Afaan Oromo that is one of under resource languages spoken in East Africa. The algorithm can be extended for semantic text similarity without modification or with a bit modification. Furthermore, the forwarded direction can improve the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Valid oxygen prescriptions for hospital inpatients have been a long-standing problem and have been described extensively in BMJ Open Quality with numerous quality improvement projects (QIPs) with the aim of improving compliance with oxygen prescribing.The British Thoracic Society recommends that all inpatients should have oxygen target saturation set on admission: this is motivated by risks of both undertreatment and overtreatment with oxygen. The discrepancy between the recommendation and the reality produced a number of interventions studied in QIPs over the past years, all aiming at bringing the local ward teams closer to the target. This has become even more important during the COVID-19 pandemic, where non-standard oxygen saturation targets and oxygen scarcity led hospital systems to rethink their internal guidelines on the subject.We propose three novel interventions to improve compliance: a remote, personally directed email communication to a ward pharmacist, a similar communication to ward nurses, and a remote, personally directed WhatsApp communication to junior ward doctors. We undertake a QIP which compares novel interventions developed in-house with the most successful interventions from oxygen prescribing initiatives that have previously been published by BMJ Open Quality. The main outcome measure was the proportion of patients with valid oxygen prescription on a ward.The series of novel interventions in three plan, do study, act cycles led to improvement in the outcome measure from 0% at baseline to 70% at the end of the QIP. The successful interventions from previous QIPs were ran in parallel on a similar ward and achieved improvement from 17.9% at baseline to 55.6% at the end of the QIP.This QIP demonstrates adapted interventions performed in context of social distancing aimed at members of multidisciplinary team which achieve superiority in increasing proportion of patients with a valid oxygen prescription, when compared with previously described methods from BMJ Open Quality.

A long-standing problem is how to create a short-length presentation for finite groups of degree n. This paper aimed at presenting a concrete method for generating presentations for the groups Sm+n, S2m and Smn for all m,nÎZ+ with fewer relations than the existing literature from the presentations of Sm and Sn. The aim is achieved by considering finite groups acting on sets and Cartesian product of groups which lead to the construction of multiple transformations as representatives of some finite groups.

Abstract Brain mapping is a gold standard for the surgery of tumors in eloquent area. Especially subcortical mapping is an essential method for the preservation of important neural fibers conveying motor, sensory and even higher brain functions such as language control. The efforts to estimate the fiber localizations in brain white matter sometimes result in the unprecise identification that is caused by several factors including electrical heterogeneity of brain tissues. To solve this long-standing problem, NY Tract Finder (Yamaguchi Tract Finder) was invented and has been used for intraoperative brain mappings. Now this electrode and method is used in more than 30 major hospitals in Japan, China, Taiwan and Russia. The novel and unique neural fiber positioning technique and our efforts for the maximal preservation of patients’ QOL will be introduced.

AbstractWe report a possible solution for the long-standing problem of the biological function of swirling motion, when a group of animals orbits a common center of the group. We exploit the hypothesis that learning processes in the nervous system of animals may be modelled by reinforcement learning (RL) and apply it to explain the phenomenon. In contrast to hardly justified models of physical interactions between animals, we propose a small set of rules to be learned by the agents, which results in swirling. The rules are extremely simple and thus applicable to animals with very limited level of information processing. We demonstrate that swirling may be understood in terms of the escort behavior, when an individual animal tries to reside within a certain distance from the swarm center. Moreover, we reveal the biological function of swirling motion: a trained for swirling swarm is by orders of magnitude more resistant to external perturbations, than an untrained one. Using our approach we analyze another class of a coordinated motion of animals—a group locomotion in viscous fluid. On a model example we demonstrate that RL provides an optimal disposition of coherently moving animals with a minimal dissipation of energy.

Mycotoxins in small grains are a significant and long-standing problem. These contaminants may be produced by members of several fungal genera, including Alternaria, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Claviceps, and Penicillium. Interventions that limit contamination can be made both pre-harvest and post-harvest. Many problems and strategies to control them and the toxins they produce are similar regardless of the location at which they are employed, while others are more common in some areas than in others. Increased knowledge of host-plant resistance, better agronomic methods, improved fungicide management, and better storage strategies all have application on a global basis. We summarize the major pre- and post-harvest control strategies currently in use. In the area of pre-harvest, these include resistant host lines, fungicides and their application guided by epidemiological models, and multiple cultural practices. In the area of post-harvest, drying, storage, cleaning and sorting, and some end-product processes were the most important at the global level. We also employed the Nominal Group discussion technique to identify and prioritize potential steps forward and to reduce problems associated with human and animal consumption of these grains. Identifying existing and potentially novel mechanisms to effectively manage mycotoxin problems in these grains is essential to ensure the safety of humans and domesticated animals that consume these grains.

This paper considers three different claims to knowledge, namely, “fully descriptive”, “generally descriptive” and causal claims. These are all common in social science, and each type of claim requires more assumptions than the previous one. After discussing their methodological and logical foundations, this paper describes some of the limitations in the nature of these three claims. Fully descriptive claims suffer from non-random errors and inaccuracies in observations, and can be queried in terms of utility. Generally, in addition to observational errors, descriptive can be questioned because of the long-standing problem of induction. Even the notion of falsification might not be able to help with this. Finally, causal claims are the most problematic of the three. While widely assumed, causation cannot be observed directly. The paper combines and develops three models of what causation might be, and discusses their implications for causal claims. It points out that so far our belief in causation is still a kind of religious one, and that neither theory nor inferential statistics can help in proving or observing its existence. Finally, the paper provides some suggestions for avoiding being misled by false knowledge and reporting our research findings with tentative care and judgement.

The sequence of Jurassic and Cretaceous strata laid down in north Lincolnshire is traced northwards onto the Market Weighton High, and compared with the equivalent Cleveland Basin sequence as it is traced south onto the High. Understanding of the manner of operation of the High has long been hindered by the amount of erosion of strata over the High, particularly in the Early Cretaceous. Facies analysis of the remaining strata present on either side of the High is used to estimate the thickness and the facies of strata originally deposited over the High. Although there were periodic uplifts of the High, leading to increasing omissions of strata approaching the High, there is little evidence that during the Jurassic the High was emergent for significant periods. Most strata were either originally present at Market Weighton in marginal marine facies, or continued across the High without interruption. The operation of the High in the light of modern understanding of crustal stresses during the Mesozoic is reviewed.

Nanobubbles are classified into surface and bulk. The main difference between them is that the former is immobile, whereas the latter is mobile. The existence of sNBs has already been proven by atomic force microscopy, but the existence of bNBs is still open to discussion; there are strong indications, however, of its existence. The longevity of NBs is a long-standing problem. Theories as to the stability of sNBs reside on their immobile nature, whereas for bNBs, the landscape is not clear at the moment. In this preliminary communication, we explore the possibility of stabilizing a bNB by Brownian motion. It is shown that a fractal walk under specific conditions may leave the size of the bubble invariant.
