AbstractRhinoceroses have been considered to have originated from tapiroids in the middle Eocene; however, the transition remains controversial, and the first unequivocal rhinocerotoids appeared about 4 Ma later than the earliest tapiroids of the Early Eocene. Here we describe 5 genera and 6 new species of rhinoceroses recently discovered from the early Eocene to the early middle Eocene deposits of the Erlian Basin of Inner Mongolia, China. These new materials represent the earliest members of rhinocerotoids, forstercooperiids, and/or hyrachyids, and bridge the evolutionary gap between the early Eocene ceratomorphs and middle Eocene rhinocerotoids. The phylogenetic analyses using parsimony and Bayesian inference methods support their affinities with rhinocerotoids, and also illuminate the phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of Ceratomorpha, although some discrepancies are present between the two criteria. The nearly contemporary occurrence of various rhinocerotoids indicates that the divergence of different rhinocerotoid groups occurred no later than the late early Eocene, which is soon after the split between the rhinocerotoids and the tapiroids in the early early Eocene. However, the Bayesian tip-dating estimate suggests that the divergence of different ceratomorph groups occurred in the middle Paleocene.

In May 2020, a new taxon of Euphorbia, Euphorbiaceae was collected from a dry hillside of Dongsheng District, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia. The morphological characteristics of the specimens analyzed differ from those of the known Euphorbia species from this region; therefore, we suspected this may be a new species, and we set to analyze the ITS2 sequences of some Euphorbia species. The results show that the new taxon belongs to the sect. Esula of Euphorbia subg. Esula. It is similar to Euphorbia esula (description from Flora of China) but does not belong to the same species. Concomitantly, plant morphological data and pollen morphology results show significant differences between the new taxon, E. esula and E. caesia, a finding that supports the delimitation of this new taxon, which is named Euphorbia mongoliensis in accordance with its geographical distribution.

ABSTRACTThe genus Orthobittacus was established by Willmann (1989) and is characterised by a long Sc vein and the unusually developed medial sector for the Bittacidae. Four Jurassic species have been described in this genus to date: O. abshiricus (Martynova, 1951) from Kirgizia; O.desacuminatus (Bode, 1953) from Braunschweig (Germany); O. polymitus Novokshonov, 1996 from Karatau (Kazakhstan); and O. maculosus Liu, Shih, Bashkuev & Ren, 2016 from the Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou (China). The fifth congeneric and second species from China, O. suni sp. nov., is described herein. The importance of the genus Orthobittacus for the phylogeny of Bittacidae, as the most plesiomorphic genus, is discussed.

A new species of Ripiphoridae Gemminger & Harold, 1870, Archaeoripiphorus nuwa gen. et sp. nov., is described and illustrated from a well-preserved impression fossil from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation collected at Daohugou Village, Shantou Township, Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia, China, representing the oldest documented occurrence of the Ripiphoridae described from the Mesozoic era. It shares several characters belonging to two basal ripiphorid subfamilies (Pelecotominae and Ptilophorinae), but it cannot be attributed to either of them and is herein placed as Subfamily incertae sedis. An overall similarity between Archaeoripiphorus gen. nov. and Recent Pelecotominae and the occurrence of wood-boring beetles in the same Formation implies a similar parasitoid host preference in xylophagous beetles for A. nuwa gen. et sp. nov., putting a spotlight on a potential host-parasitoid relationship in the Mesozoic.

Abstract We describe a new species of shorebird, tentatively referred to the family Charadriidae, from the Huadian Formation (Middle Eocene) in Jilin Province, China. In general morphology the specimen closely matches that of an extant charadriid, and corresponds in size to the Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus). If correctly identified this is the oldest record of the Charadriidae. The Middle Eocene paleoenvironment of the Huadian region is thought to have resembled a subtropical swamp. Un Ave Playera de China del Eoceno Medio Resumen. Describimos una nueva especie de ave playera, tentativamente clasificada como de la Familia Charadriidae, de la Formación Huadian (Eoceno Medio) en la Provincia de Jilin, China. En términos de morfología general, el ejemplar coincide mayormente con la morfología de un charádrido actual, y se asemeja en tamaño a Charadrius vociferus. Si la identificación es correcta, este representa el registro más antiguo para la Familia Charadriidae. El paleoambiente del Eoceno Medio de la región de Huadian se asemejaba probablemente a un pantano subtropical.

A new species of the family Grammolingiidae (Neuroptera) (Leptolingia imminuta sp. nov.) is described from Daohugou village (Middle Jurassic), Inner Mongolia, China. In this new species, MA forks at the same level as the separation of Rs2 from Rs, close to the middle of forewing, this structure of MA is peculiar in Grammolingiidae and is different from that of all other known species. Moreover, this new species is the smallest species known in the family Grammolingiidae (30 mm wing span).

A new genus with a new species (Jurachresmoda gaskelli gen. et sp. nov.) of Chresmodidae (Insecta: Polyneoptera: Orthopterida) is described and illustrated. They were collected from the Middle Jurassic in Daohugou, Jiulongshan Formation, Inner Mongolia (Nei Mongol Autonomous Region), China. J. gaskelli have fringing hairs on tarsi and a part of tibiae of mid legs. These hairs and leg structures were probably associated with its water-skiing locomotion on freshwater. A high number of tarsomeres, e. g. ultra-articulated tarsi as reported in other species of Chresmodidae, are also found for this new species. But, these true tarsi are mixed with some wrinkles resulted from dehydration and compression during fossilization process. Nymphs of the new species are also described. This is the first time that long and segmented cerci of the nymph are described in Chresmodidae.

Leptarctus is a poorly known fossil carnivore that ranges through the Miocene of North America and Inner Mongolia, China (Lim, 1996; Zhai, 1964). Though it has been one of the least studied carnivores, more than 20 localities in North America have produced Leptarctus (Lim, 1999). The characters diagnosing Leptarctus as a mustelid include absence of M2, absence of a notch between the blades of the upper carnassial, and a reduced dentition with loss of PI and pi. Though Leptarctus is a mustelid, the teeth bear many similarities to those of procyonids, Procyon lotor and Nasua nasua and stand as a remarkable example of dental convergence (Leidy, 1856; Lim, 1999). Unlike other mustelids, Leptarctus has prominent double sagittal crests, heavy zygomatic arches, a prominent occipital crest, a well-developed hypocone on P4, labially curved upper canines, grooved lower canines, raccoon-like mandibles, elongated metatarsals, and unique bony projections on the tympanic bullae (Lim, 1999).
