Windham Elementary School underwent a wholesale shift towards student and teacher leadership, student centered instruction, and the adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) based best practices. The use of strategic leadership was instrumental in facilitating the changes undergone at Windham. This article explored how strategic leadership was used to facilitate the development of the Chromebook Initiative. The six essential skills of strategic leadership: anticipation, challenging, interpreting, deciding, aligning and learning were used to lead school faculty through planning, implementation and evaluation of the initiative (Schoemaker, Krupp, & Howland 2013). Anticipation, challenging and interpreting, brought about faculty utilizing action research to uncover the fact that low cost Google Chromebooks would provide an easily managed, electronic environment. Using the essential strategic skills of deciding, aligning and learning, Windham Elementary established an educational account and implemented a 1:1 Google Chromebook initiative in grades 3-6 to meet the collaborative 21st century needs of students and faculty.

This chapter focuses on the metamorphosis of teacher leaders, from the roles, responsibilities, and dispositions of teacher leaders, to teacher leaders using technology for self-professional development as well as leading professional development for the improvement of teaching and learning. The underlying premise is that teacher leaders work with diverse populations of both teachers and public school students who are present in schools today. It is strong leadership at the classroom level that makes a difference with colleagues and students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or social class, and can ultimately impact an entire school culture. This chapter integrates these core tenants in an effort to guide the reader to understanding the necessity of developing teacher leaders to meet the challenges inherent in 21st century schools and classrooms.

In the context of educational decentralisation, school leadership encompassing different sources of leadership is significant for school performance. However, few studies have investigated the pathway regarding how principals and teachers as distinct sources of learning-centred leadership exert impact on teacher learning. To this end, survey data collected from 1340 junior high school teachers in Taiwan were analysed with structural equation modelling. The results suggest that both principal leadership and teacher leadership affect teacher learning through direct pathways, and that of teachers exhibits an even greater impact. In addition, principal leadership affects teacher learning through indirect pathways mediated by teacher leadership. By further investigating the mediating effects of different practices of teacher leadership, we found that teacher-led improvement of curriculum and instruction is a critical mediator for teacher learning.
