Titanium aluminides intermetallic compounds have received great attention during the past decade, since they have the potential, in aircraft and automotive engines, to replace the high density Ni-base superalloys However, these intermetallics possess poor oxidation properties at high temperatures. Previous studies showed that protective alumina scale formation on γ-TiAl can be obtained by small additions (around 2 at.%) of Ag. In the present study, a number of cast Ti–Al–Si alloys were investigated in relation to transient oxide formation in air at 1300°C. After various oxidation times the oxide composition, microstructure and morphology were studied by combining a number of analysis techniques. The TiAl–Si alloys appear to form Al Ti and Si oxides. However, the formation of silicon oxide at the interface of base metal and scale slows down the oxidation rate significantly.

AbstractOptical emission analysis and mass spectroscopy was applied to study the rf-glow discharge in hydrocarbons used for the deposition of amorphous hydrogenated carbon (a-C:H).The mass spectra of the positively charged ions in the plasma are characteristic for the hydrocarbon used - e.g.benzene, hexane, or methane. In contrast, the properties of the deposited a-C:H film, such as refractive index, are independent of the precursor gas.Spatially resolved optical measurements show strong emission from C, C2, and CH in the vincinity of the negatively self-biased cathode (substrate) irrespective of the precursor used.Based on these findings we conclude that the fragmentation of the impinging energetic hydrocarbons is one of the key mechanisms for the formation of hard, strongly cross-linked a-C:H films.

The fibre movements and micromechanical mechanisms during the forming of paper are still not fully understood. This paper investigates the application of acoustic emission analysis (AE analysis) for the characterization of fibre behaviour. For this purpose, tensile tests with paper samples are performed on a miniature tensile test rig. Correlations between micromechanical processes in the paper and the peak-frequencies of the detected AE signals are found.
