Electron Beam Welding (EBW) is used in various industrial applications for joining dissimilar metals due to its accuracy and good quality joints. International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) is the first experimental fusion power generating reactor in India. It uses a host of metals and alloys like Ti-6Al-4V, Ni-Al bronze and a special copper alloy (CRZ). This investigation aims to study the metallurgical and mechanical aspects of CRZ alloy and its EBW joint with a dissimilar metal like Nickel and stainless steel. Characterization includes material composition and effect of heat-treatment. The CRZ alloys were solution annealed at the temperature of 980 degrees C for 15 minutes and then aged at 460-480 degrees C for 4.5 hrs. The EBW welded joints were fabricated with CRZ-CRZ, CRZ-Ni and Ni-SS combination. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed.

Aircraft industries witness an extensive variety of utilizations in unique welded joints thinking about the benefit of quality and high corrosion protection. In any case, joining of dissimilar materials is more mind boggling because of the distinction in material properties. In this investigation dissimilar metal joints of pure Copper plates and Stainless Steel 304 plates of 3mm thickness were welded with Electron Beam Welding. The welding input parameters like Welding speed, Beam current and Work distance liable to quality of weld are considered. Plan of analysis has been made utilizing Taguchi strategy with three levels of input values. Ultimate tensile strength and hardness number were found to decide the mechanical quality. Both the yield esteems are consolidated for expectation and optimized using Gray Relation Analysis (GRA). The impacts of the input parameters towards weld quality were analyzed using ANOVA.

AbstractBy means of additive manufacturing, the production of components with nearly unlimited geometrical design complexity is feasible. Especially, powder bed fusion techniques such as electron beam powder bed fusion (PBF-EB) are currently focused. However, equal material properties are mandatory to be able to transfer this technique to a wide scope of industrial applications. Within the scope of this work, the mechanical properties of the PBF-EB-manufactured Ti6Al4V alloy are investigated as a function of the position on the building platform. It can be stated that as-built surface roughness changes within building platform whereby highest surface roughness detected by computed tomography (Ra = 46.0 ± 5.3 µm) was found for specimens located in the front of the building platform. In contrast, no significant differences in relative density could be determined and specimens can be assumed as nearly fully dense (> 99.9%). Furthermore, all specimens are affected by an undersized effective diameter compared to the CAD data. Fatigue tests revealed that specimens in the front of the building platform show slightly lower performance at higher stress amplitudes as compared to specimens in the back of the building platform. However, process-induced notch-like defects based on the surface roughness were found to be the preferred location for early crack initiation.
