Purpose: There is a dearth of literature regarding the documentation of advance care planning (ACP) in the geriatric population, despite the controversial, yet well-studied need for ACP. The purpose of this pilot study was to provide an update to a prior study from our institution that outlined the need for increased documentation of advance care planning (ACP) in an urban geriatric population. Methods: Our study involved using telemedicine to conduct dedicated ACP visits and an electronic medical record (EMR) note-template specifically designed for these visits in an attempt to increase the amount of documented ACP in the EMR in this population. Results: The study did not yield significant results due to the inability to schedule enough patients for these dedicated visits. Discussion: While our study was ultimately unsuccessful, 3 crucial lessons were identified that will inform and fuel future interventions by the authors to further the study of documentation of ACP.

Background: The Los Angeles Barbershop Blood Pressure Study (LABBPS) demonstrated that collaboration between barbers and pharmacists delivering hypertension management could significantly improve blood pressure as well as access to care. It is unknown if this model can be translated to other locations. This single-arm, proof-of-concept pilot study tested the development and implementation of a similar protocol in Nashville, TN (NCT04232124). Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, community stakeholders, clinicians, investigators, and the LABBPS team convened to adapt the study design and protocol. Established barbershops with barbers willing to be trained on study procedures were recruited as study sites. Non-Hispanic Black male clients, aged 35-79 years with systolic blood pressure (SBP) > 140 mmHg on two screening days were eligible for participation. Enrolled participants met with a pharmacist for lifestyle and medication management at least once monthly for a six-month period. Barbers measured blood pressure during haircuts for additional monitoring. Results: Eight barbershops in business for an average of 20 (± 5) years participated in the trial. Barbers from each shop (range: 1-4) were trained. A total of 419 clients completed screening visit 1, 82 were eligible and 52 (12%) completed visit 2. We enrolled 36, with 30 completing the initial clinical visit and 27 had complete data at 6-months. Participants were on average age 50 (± 10) years, had a body mass index 33 (± 6), 44% were currently smoking, 52% with high school or less education, and 56% reported current primary care. Baseline BP 157.7±17.1/ 95.1±13.9 mmHg improved to 125.7±11.9/75.6±9.5, a change of -32.1±21.6/ -19.5±14.1, respectively. At 6-months 85% of the group had a BP<140/90, 74% BP<135/85, and 67% BP<130/80. At baseline 15% of participants reported health as excellent/very good and this increased to 56% at 6-months (p=0.002). Adverse reactions reported were minimal. Conclusion: Implementation of the barber-pharmacist model of hypertension management and care delivery improved BP control among hypertensive Black men in Nashville. Lessons learned regarding adaptation overcoming unforeseen barriers will inform expansion into additional naïve locations for future research.

This chapter is a report on using a course management system Desire2Learn® to facilitate the implementation of the quality assurance standards recommended by Quality Matters. After a brief introduction to the Quality Matters standards, the chapter describes how the Desire2Learn learning environment can be structured to build an interconnected framework to promote objective-oriented, criterion-referenced, dynamic assessment. A pilot study was conducted to explore how learning activities can be assessed in alignment with measurable learning objectives, with reference to criterion-based rubrics. The chapter discusses issues found through the study and lessons learned in using the competency structure of Desire2Learn to enforce objective-oriented assessment.

This paper presents an overview of current decision making approaches. For some approaches abstract information is provided, whereas others require a large amount of labor and time resources to facilitate decision making. However, few address the issues of assisting participants in learning how to make decisions and provide prompt responses to the situations. Harnessing lessons learned from making inappropriate decisions is expensive. To redress this problem, this paper presents a pilot study of the investigation of the psychological behaviors of humans to improve decision making processes with the use of organizational narrative simulation (ONS). By using the ONS method, possible and plausible narrative-based environments can be simulated. Participants can take actions based on their decisions; they can also observe the changes and the consequences. The decisions for handling new challenges generated purposely are validated in a trial that allows prompt responses to the situations. The ONS method is implemented in a selected reference site. The implementation processes, findings, and benefits are presented.

This chapter describes a smartphone-based prompted recall travel survey that aims to collect more accurate data for transportation modeling. It details the design and implementation of the survey, including the smartphone app for the Android platform, the mobile phone-based prompted recall method, and the management, manipulation, and analysis of GPS data for trip characteristics imputation. The survey commenced in October 2013 and was a person-based pilot study designed to be collected over a week. Although it did not provide a statistically representative sample, the overall experience helps establish the various parameters and procedures for the development of surveys with similar initiatives. The chapter concludes with findings and lessons learned from this smartphone-based travel survey and suggestions for how future smartphone-based surveys might be prepared and conducted.

Introduction:Potentially vulnerable population groups in disasters include the elderly and frail, people who are isolated, and those with chronic diseases, including mental health conditions or mobility issues. The 2011 Queensland flood disaster affected central and southeast Queensland, resulting in 2.5 million people being adversely affected. Seventy-two local government areas disaster were activated under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, which was more than 99 percent of Queensland. The issues regarding the role and responsibility across governments relating to planning, setup, and management of evacuation centers will be discussed.Aim:This paper will report the preliminary findings of a pilot study undertaken with local government officials and humanitarian agencies in Australia concerning their involvement in planning for, setting up, and managing evacuation centers for vulnerable populations in Australia during the Queensland floods in 2011. The objective is to illuminate the challenges officials faced, and the resolutions and lessons learned in the preparation of evacuation centers through this event.Methods:The study involved interviews with local government and relevant agencies’ officials who have been involved in establishing evacuation centers for vulnerable populations during the 2011 floods. Six officials were recruited from local government areas affected by the disaster in Queensland, Australia. Semi-structured phone interviews were audio-recorded and thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo software.Results:Three core themes emerged: 1) understanding of the importance of preparation, 2) challenging evacuation center environments, and 3) awareness of good governance principles.Discussion:This pilot study demonstrated that communication with stakeholders during the preparation period prior to a disaster is essential to best practice for evacuation center management. Understanding and being aware of good governance is also an important element to establish evacuation centers effectively.
