Purpose The purpose of this study was to understand barriers and facilitators to engagement in a diabetes prevention program for young women at an urban safety-net health care system. Methods Individual semistructured interviews (N = 29) explored motivations, challenges, and successes regarding participation and suggestions for improvement among women aged 18 to 39 years who enrolled in the National Diabetes Prevention Program in the past 2 years. Participants were classified as nonattendees (n = 10), early-withdrawers (n = 9), or completers (n = 10). Interview transcriptions were analyzed using a grounded hermeneutic editing approach. Results Qualitative analysis revealed 4 main themes (enrollment, attendance, experience, and suggestions) with multiple subthemes. Most women were motivated to enroll for health and family concerns. Early-withdrawers and nonattendees reported confusion about the program’s aim and relevancy, logistical barriers, and lack of connection with fellow participants/coaches. Highly engaged women noted persistent motivation, perceived weight loss, and supportive program relationships. Conclusions Multiple barriers/facilitators for young women appear addressable in future adaptations. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings in other settings and explore implementation and effectiveness of adaptations, with a goal of reducing risks prior to conception.

In an effort to increase the quality of education in Madrasah, the government (the Minister of Religious Affairs through Islamic Education General Director), since 1995, has performed a supportive program in science laboratories by providing for needs in several MTsN (Islamic public junior high schools). In the year 1998, support was given to 35 MAN (Islamic public senior high schools) and in the year 2005 to several considerably superior MA (Islamic private high schools). In the year 2010 support was given to 400 private MA in 19 provinces. In the same year, support was given to 100 MA laboratory facilities in 11 provinces. The massive amount of support has not yet been able to be used optimally in order to increase the quality of education by the Madrasah(s) because of many obstacles such as: the low quantity of human resources (teacher and laboratory staff), the fact that several MA do not possess a laboratory building (Science and Linguistic major), and the fact that science and linguistic majors do not exist in several Madrasah. On the other hand, distribution of funds also experienced many difficulties. The result of the research of the Center of Research and Development Islamic Education and Religion in the year 2012 entitled the “Use of the laboratory facilities in Madrasah (the study of the well-funded science and linguistic laboratory Madrasah Aliyah)” indicates that the use of laboratory facilities has not yet been maximized by the Madrasah and support for implementation has experienced many difficulties.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of faculty autonomy in sustaining a successful information literacy program. Design/methodology/approach – Faculty members were given the opportunity to create courses that integrated and assessed information literacy as part of a course grant program associated with an institutional assessment mandate. This case study analyzes course grant proposals, course assessment methods and results. It also presents results of a follow-up survey of faculty participants to see if they continued to integrate information literacy in other courses. Results are situated in the context of self-determination theory to better understand the role of autonomy in faculty motivation and participation in an assessment program. Findings – Defining and integrating information literacy themselves allowed faculty to align information literacy with their own course goals. Supporting faculty in choosing their own assessment methods for these integrations also provided program administrators with new information about faculty members’ teaching and learning practices and values. Results of a follow-up study confirmed that faculty continued to integrate information literacy in their courses of their own accord, underscoring the importance of an autonomy-supportive program structure. Originality/value – This paper provides evidence for information literacy advocates that faculty autonomy can be a strength, not an obstacle. It demonstrates ways to incorporate and allow for autonomy within program constraints and introduces librarians to self-determination theory, a way of thinking about motivation that can help librarians pursue more effective collaborations with faculty.

The well-documented gaps between needed and provided care for patients and families living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mandate changes to clinical practice. The multifaceted evidence-based INSPIRED COPD Outreach ProgramTM was first implemented in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 2010 (INSPIRED = Implementing a Novel and Supportive Program of Individualized care for patients and families living with REspiratory Disease) and undergoes ongoing evaluation. By enhancing patient confidence to manage their illness more effectively in their homes and communities, there has been a sustained and substantial reduction in facility-based care in comparison with patient care experience pre-INSPIRED. Sustaining and spreading a program recently designated a leading practice by Accreditation Canada, and especially modifying the program as new evidence emerges, requires integrating and modeling at the ‘bedside’ both evidence-based medicine (‘doing the right things’) and quality improvement (‘doing them right’). In Canada, where COPD care gaps are common, a new pan-Canadian INSPIRED-based quality improvement program is supporting multidisciplinary healthcare teams to bridge the chasm between evidence and practice by working together to ‘do the right things right’ in COPD care.
