This article examines how invisible methods of social control contribute to the tolerance of battering amongst women. The study is based on the responses of 173 Palestinian women selected randomly from the East Jerusalem area, and who were interviewed to assess their perception and response to wife battering. Quantitative and qualitative data collected on the respondents suggest that while women do not accept violence practised on them, they tolerate it. Contextual analysis of the data showed that women tolerate violence because no other viable alternative is available to them. An in-depth analysis of the hidden variables contributing to this tolerance is given from a feminist perspective. Suggestions are given regarding the questions researchers should ask when dealing with wife battering.

Feminists have noted the injustice of the institution of marriage and the asymmetric power dynamics within gender-structured marriages. Recently, feminists have found an unexpected supporter of this struggle against marriage in some liberal political theorists. I argue that this new wave of interest in the wrongness of marriage within liberalism reveals shortcomings from a feminist perspective. While some liberals fail to realise that instead of being disestablished, the institution of marriage should be radically reformed, others do not recognise that such a reform should be theorised by starting from our non-idealised conditions of gender inequality and from an analysis of how the institution of marriage intersects with other spheres of gender injustice. This article provides recommendations for the radical reform of marriage by following some methodological premises of feminist theory. To illustrate how the reform of marriage should be theorised, it focuses on the intersection between the sphere of gender injustice represented by immigration and that of marriage.

In this article, we analyze how prostitution has been resignified as a scenario of subjective reconstruction for men in a social context of changes. Prostitution is analyzed from a gender and feminist perspective, taking into account how gender inequality makes possible prostitution and how gender inequality is reproduced within prostitution. Also we analyze the construction of the masculinity arguing that masculinity is supported by some bases: identity linked to work and family provider; to the authority of the paterfamilias; to the exercise of violence or the threat of using it; to sexual activity (following androcentric and patriarchal patterns). It is argued that some of these bases have failure and others (violence and sexual activity) have strengthened and prostitution appears at the crossroads between violence and patriarchal sexuality.

Many scholars have done research about the significance of Zulu proverbs in the society. While most studies have concluded that proverbs play a significant role in instilling positive behaviour in the society (cf. Mathonsi, 2004; Magwaza, 2004, etc.), this paper seeks to show negative emotions (gender inequities) reflected on the some selected Zulu proverbs. Adopting a radical feminist perspective, this paper presents a discussion of Zulu proverbs referring to the role and position of men in the society and those which are associated with women and marriage. The discussion in the article centres around the rigidity of Zulu proverbs vis-à-vis prevalent changes in the society

In this paper, I explore the implications for gender equality of building democratic institutions in workplaces and democratic planning in the economy. I review proposals for postcapitalism and consider whether those institutional innovations are likely to address three aspects of gender equality: discrimination and harassment at work, adequate provision for care work, and social control over consumer decisions. I propose three areas for developing competency at democratic decision making that could improve gender equity. JEL Classification: P4, B54
