The electrochemical oxidation of the residual ammonia nitrogen contained in biologically pretreated coking wastewater using three-dimensional electrode system was studied. The results show the Ti/RuO2/IrO2 anode plates and the coke have good surface characteristics for the purpose of this study. In addition, studies also show that the three-dimensional electrode system should be able to give a satisfied solution to the residual bio-refractory ammonia nitrogen in biologically pretreated coking wastewater in comparison to conventional two-dimensional electrodes. At coke size of 10–20 mesh, electrode distance of 1.0 cm and current density of 4.5 mA/cm2, the residual ammonia nitrogen in the three-dimensional electrode system was almost completely removed in 60 min.

Abstract The effects of thermally and Fe(II) activated potassium persulfate (PPS) on sludge dewatering performance were compared systematacially. Sludge dewaterability was monitored by measuring capillary suction time (CST) and sludge specific resistance to filtration (SRF), and the degradation effect was characterized by Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The Change of extracellular polymer substance (EPS) including soluble, loosely bound and tightly bound EPS (S-EPS, LB-EPS and TB-EPS) with time and PPS dosage was monitored to discuss the oxidation efficiency of thermally and Fe(II) activated PPS. Sludge supernate were analyzed by three dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission spectrum (3D-EEM) to confirm the proteins transformation. The result showed that sludge dewaterability in terms of CST and SRF were enhanced with increasing PPS dosage and condition time of both two activated methods. While Fe(II) activated PPS could reduce sludge CST and SRF to preferred values at low PPS dosage and short condition time. Maenwhile, sludge degradation effect was also more obvious. Mechanically, sludge TB-EPS in proteins and polysaccharides converted to SB-EPS was more quickly with Fe(II) activated PPS. Besides, thermally activated PPS tended to oxidize the protein in the supernatant first.

As a consequence of increasing urbanisation and industrialization two major effects have occurred. They are resource exploitation and waste generation. In this view, the present work has been undertaken to study problems of open dumping of MSW at Vellalore disposal site of Coimbatore city. The objectives of the present study are monitor and assess the problems of principle solid waste on land and to investigate the feasibility of energy recover from MSW. Physical and chemical characterization of MSW collected from the disposal site showed that the solid waste has 68.95% of biodegradable fraction with relatively higher percentage of moisture content and 72% of volatile solids contents. Hence, methanation process of MSW can be carried out to recover energy. Leachate characterisation study concludes the that the concentration of Total Organic Carbon, Ammonia nitrogen, volatile solids, pH , electrical conductivity were high in fresh leachate and decreased due to the decomposition of MSW. Soil quality study of Vellalore site showed that the soil texture and colour has been altered to a depth of 60cm.To manage the solid waste problem, high solids anaerobic digestion process was carried out in the laboratory in a batch reactor, which showed that the factor pH was found to be significant in the production of biogas. The concentration of volatile solids, Total carbon, Total nitrogen, due to the decomposition of the reactor contents, which has utilized in the production of gas. During the experimental study a cumulative volume of 3.2 litres of gas was obtained in a period of 120 days from 8 litres volume of the initially loaded MSW.
