Švédův Stůl Cave in the Moravian Karst has been excavated several times since Martin Kříž started the first excavation in 1886. Two parts of the site were re-excavated in 2019. The primary aim was to conduct classical as well as innovative and experimental sedimentological and geoarchaeological investigations of sediments from the discarded spoil heap outside the cave entrance (trench C–D). Intact sediments with a small number of lithic artefacts and a large number of animal bones were also excavated during the 2019 excavation (trench A–B) located under the trench excavated by Bohuslav Klíma’s team in the 1950s. An attempt is being made using pXRF, benchtop ED-XRF and ITRAX techniques to link some of the sedimentary material in the spoil heap (C–D) with the stratified sediments in trench A–B. Animal bones and lithic artefacts were found in both trenches. Numerous samples were collected for geoarchaeological, palaeoenvironmental and dating analyses and the results will be published in upcoming publications.

AbstractThe Fezzan Project is investigating the last 10,000 years of human settlement, landscape evolution and climatic change in the Germa region in southern Libya. The second season in February–March 1998 comprised interdisciplinary research in archaeology and geography, centred around excavation and survey work carried out at the site of Old Germa. To date, three phases of mud brick buildings have been partially explored. In addition, wider geomorphological study and archaeological survey and fieldwalking were carried out elsewhere in the Germa/Twesh oasis and around el-Hatiya. Numerous sites were discovered, including a new hillfort of Zinchecra type and several valley centre ‘villages’ of Garamantian/Roman date. Artefactual studies were carried out on pottery and lithics, animal bones and seeds. Further work on the subterranean irrigation features, the foggaras, have confirmed their pre-Islamic origins.

The sixth season of excavations at Can Hasan took place between 28th August and 30th September. Additional work on storing and arranging the non-registered materials from the excavations continued until 12 th October. All materials other than the registered objects from the 1961 to the 1966 seasons are now stored in the depot at Can Hasan. These are the sherds, animal bones, heavy stone objects, the samples of stone, clay and other materials. They are stored by year and by category in locked storerooms in the dig house. In addition to the house bekçi there is now a full-time official bekçi for the Hüyük and for other hüyüks in the neighbourhood.In the 1966 excavations Messrs. D. C. Biernoff, S. Payne and J. N. Postgate were field assistants; Mrs. Payne took charge of the work in the house, assisted by Mr. C. Slack and the Misses M. Bell, C. Prater, and T. Harrington-Smith. In addition Mrs. Payne had charge of the pottery; Mr. Payne of the obsidian, Miss Harrington-Smith of registration and Mr. Slack and Miss Bell of conservation and pottery mending. Bay Bedri Yalman from the Konya Museum represented the Turkish Government.

New fossiliferous layers of the Březina Formation were discovered in the valley of the Říčka Brook SSW of the village of Ochoz u Brna in 2011. Four taxa of trilobites were preliminary determined: Archegonus (Phillibole) cf. polleni (Woodward, 1894), Archegonus (Phillibole) cf. cauliquercus Brauckmann 1981, Liobole (Liobole) glabra proxima Chlupáč, 1966 and ?Spinibole sp. The newly discovered fossiliferous beds belong to the Viséan (Lower to ?Upper Viséan, approximately cu IIγ–cu IIδ). The occurrence of limestone pebbles and limestone cobbles in aleuropelitic shales was also recorded. The Late Tournaisian foraminifer Darjella monilis Malakhova, 1964 was discovered in a dark grey limestone cobble derived from the Hády-Říčka limestone sequence of the Líšeň Formation.

In the course of several 21-cm observing programmes being carried out by the Leiden Observatory with the 25-meter telescope at Dwingeloo, a fairly complete, though inhomogeneous, survey of the regionl11= 0° to 66° at low galactic latitudes is becoming available. The essential data on this survey are presented in Table 1. Oort (1967) has given a preliminary report on the first and third investigations. The third is discussed briefly by Kerr in his introductory lecture on the galactic centre region (Paper 42). Burton (1966) has published provisional results of the fifth investigation, and I have discussed the sixth in Paper 19. All of the observations listed in the table have been completed, but we plan to extend investigation 3 to a much finer grid of positions.

Space flight, with its unique environmental constraints such as immobilization, decreased and increased pressures, and radiation, is known to affect testicular morphology and spermatogenesis. Selye, summarized the manifestations of physiological response to nonspecific stress and he pointed out that atrophy of the gonads always occurred. Reports of data collected from two dogs flown in space for 22 days (Cosmos 110) indicate that there was an increase of 30 to 70% atypical spermatozoa when compared to ground based controls. Seventy-five days after the flight the abnormalities had decreased to the high normal value of 30% and mating of these dogs after this period produced normal offspring, suggesting complete recovery. Effects of immobilization and increased gravity were investigated by spinning rats and mice at 2x g for 8-9 weeks. A decrease in testicular weight was noted in spun animals when compared to controls. Immobilization has been show to cause arrest of spermatogenesis in Macaca meminstrins.

This is a preliminary report of electron probe analysis of rabbit portal-anterior mesenteric vein (PAMV) smooth muscle cryosectioned without fixation or cryoprotection. The instrumentation and method of electron probe quantitation used (1) and our initial results with cardiac (2) and skeletal (3) muscle have been presented elsewhere.In preparations depolarized with high K (K2SO4) solution, significant calcium peaks were detected over the sarcoplasmic reticulum (Fig 1 and 2) and the continuous perinuclear space. In some of the fibers there were also significant (up to 200 mM/kg dry wt) calcium peaks over the mitochondria. However, in smooth muscle that was not depolarized, high mitochondrial Ca was found in fibers that also contained elevated Na and low K (Fig 3). Therefore, the possibility that these Ca-loaded mitochondria are indicative of cell damage remains to be ruled out.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that adults who stutter will exhibit significant improvements after attending a residential, 3-week intensive program that focuses on avoidance reduction and stuttering modification therapy. Preliminary analyses focused on four measures: (a) SSI-3, (b) speech rate, (c) S-24 Scale, and (d) OASES. Results indicated significant improvements on all of the measures.
