This study investigated relationships between academic success and aspects of health and illness in college students. College juniors and seniors completed a survey addressing ratings of health, measures of sleep, mental health, screen time, the frequency of illness-related absences and access of healthcare. Measures of academic performance (GPA and academic status) were gathered from university records. Significant relationships to academic performance were found for overall health, sleep, mental health, time accessing social media, and frequency of accessing healthcare and school due to illness. Collectively, health measures predicted 10% of the variance in GPA.

Smartphones have become devices of choice for running studies on health and well-being, especially among young people. When entering college, students often face many challenges, such as adaptation to new situations, establish new interpersonal relationships, heavier workload and shorter deadlines, teamwork assignments and others. In this paper, the results of four studies examining students' well-being and mental health as well as student's perception of challenges and obstacles they face during their academic journey are presented. In addition, a mobile application that acts as a complement to a successful tutoring project implemented at the authors' University is proposed. The application allows students to keep their schedules and deadlines in one place while incorporating virtual tutor features. By using both, the events from the student's calendar and his or her mood indicators, the application sends notifications accordingly. These notifications encompass motivational phrases, time management guidelines, as well as relaxation tips.

Allocating limited mental health resources is a challenge for juvenile justice facilities. We evaluated the clinical utility of the Massachusetts Youth Screening Instrument, Version 2 (MAYSI-2)—an instrument designed to aid in this process—in three subsamples of justice-involved youth (ages 14-17): detained girls ( n = 69), detained boys ( n = 130), and incarcerated boys ( n = 373). For perspective, we compared its performance (in the incarcerated subsample) to that of the Youth Self-Report (YSR), a more widely-used screen. The MAYSI-2 subscales were moderately useful for detecting relevant diagnoses, and differences were observed across samples. However, as a general mental health screen, the MAYSI-2 performed well (and comparably to the YSR), correctly classifying 66% to 75% of youth. When used to differentiate youth with any and without any disorder, both instruments were effective. Given the MAYSI-2’s practical advantages over the YSR (lower cost, easier administration), it may be a better option for juvenile facilities.

The prevalence and severity of mental health issues are increasing among college students, and such issues pose a threat to health and academic performance. Responses from 66,159 undergraduate students about mental health and academics from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment II were examined using regression analyses. Differences in mental health diagnoses were found by classification with first-year students reporting higher rates of self-injury and seriously considering suicide. Upperclassmen reported higher rates of academic impact from mental health factors. Findings indicate one’s first-year of college as the prime time to promote awareness of and strategies to prevent mental health issues or negative academic effects; implications for first-year experience programs are discussed.

Very little evidence addresses college students’ perceptions of mental health and supportive services available to assist them with being academically successful since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This is also true for comparing community college students and university students. This study examines the concepts of how COVID-19 has impacted overall student-perceptions of their mental health. Data on perceptions was collected from both community college and university students. A total of 932 students completed a survey regarding their views of mental health, academic success and supportive services Relationships between perceived mental health and supportive services rendered significant findings. Perceived differences between perceived mental health and supportive services were also significantly significant in the data. Recommendations for future research is also explored.

Chinese college students frequently experience loneliness during remote learning, resulting in impaired academic performance. The relationships among loneliness, mental health, and academic performance were explored for these students. Mixed method research was conducted using both investigation and interview methods. In the online survey, 437 college students were recruited from three universities in Wuhan, China. The sampling began on April 7, 2021, and ended on April 11, 2021. The reliability and validity of the scales of loneliness, mental health, and academic performance were verified by a confirmatory factor analysis model, and a higher-order model confirmed the mediating mechanism. The mediating mechanism revealed that mental health and the influence of loneliness negatively impacted academic performance. Based on this mechanism, methods for coping with loneliness were explored by interviewing 12 Chinese college students online between April 20 and April 28, 2021. Further interview data coding and classification were conducted. The interview results revealed that self-comfort and seeking assistance from others were the primary methods used by the students to alleviate loneliness. Accordingly, it is found that loneliness during independent learning significantly affects mental health, causing a decline in academic achievement among Chinese college students. Loneliness, the primary cause of the complete mediating effect of loneliness, mental health, and academic performance can be alleviated in two ways; self-comfort and asking help from others.
