In the last decade, the scientific community brought to the debate gaps that slow down the advance of knowledge regarding global biodiversity. More recently, this discussion has reached subterranean environments, where these gaps are even more dramatic due to the relict and vulnerable nature of their species. In this context, we tested ecological metrics related to some of these gaps, checking if the biological relevance of the caves would change depending on ecological attributes related to each metric. The study was carried out in caves from southeastern Brazil, located in a region presenting a high richness of troglobitic species restricted to a narrow geographical extent. Thus, we verified: (a) the cave invertebrate communities’ vulnerability with the Vulnerability Index and the Importance Value for Cave Conservation; (b) the distribution and endemicity of the troglobitic species with the Endemicity Index; (c) the phylogenetic diversity of the troglobitic species considering the average taxonomic distinction (∆+), their richness and evenness. We observed a considerable change in the ordering of the caves’ biological relevance according to each tested attribute (index). We discussed how each of these metrics and their attributes indirectly relate to: (a) the preservation and maintenance of the phylogenetic diversity of subterranean communities; (b) the spatial restrictions of different groups, where the greater their restrictions, the greater their vulnerability; (c) the preservation of caves with high biological relevance considering these different attributes together. Thus, we recommend the use of different metrics so that different ecological attributes can be considered, supporting actions that aim to preserve caves in highly altered regions. Finally, we find that the most biologically important cave in the region is not protected (Gruta da Morena cave). We warn that this cave needs to be contemplated by a conservation unit in the region urgently.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In the present study, an attempt is made to understand the impact on Social Vulnerability of the Kopili basin due to various severities of flood hazard. The flood hazard is generated using multi-temporal historical satellite based analysis and integration of annual flood inundation layers. The census of India data of 2001 and 2011 is spatially joined with village database to study the impact at village level. Using 5 Census variables from both Census 2001 &amp;amp; 2011 as vulnerability indicators, the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) is derived and classified into various vulnerable zones namely Low, Moderate and High Vulnerable zones. The findings of the study show that the number of villages falling in Low and High Vulnerable zones had decreased during Census 2011 when compared to 2001 and a rise of 6% in villages falling in moderate vulnerable zones during 2011 is observed. The spatial database generated is useful to understand the impact of floods on the Social Vulnerability status of the basin and can be a useful input to further study the Physical, Economic and Environmental Vulnerabilities of the basin.</p>

O presente estudo foi realizado no Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Santa Virgínia (SP), local de grandes atrativos ecoturísticos, sendo sua visitação voltada para as trilhas e o rafting, prática que ocorre no Rio Paraibuna com o uso de botes. Visitantes são acompanhados por monitores, ambiente propício para a realização de um estudo de caso que busca analisar quanti-qualitativamente a Educação Ambiental no ecoturismo e no turismo de aventura. Questionários foram aplicados aos turistas, entrevistas semiestruturadas aos monitores ambientais, à operadora de rafting que atua no local ao gestor da unidade. Foi realizada observação participante nas trilhas e no rafting. Verificou-se que a grande maioria dos visitantes está aberta à Educação Ambiental, a praticar o ecoturismo para ter contato com a natureza e aprender algo novo. Percebeu-se que existe um esforço da gestão do Núcleo Santa Virgínia, e dos monitores para realizar a prática educativa, porém ainda não há uma definição clara por parte destes do que seria a Educação Ambiental. A falta de discussão sobre o tema e a não percepção dos potenciais e limitações da Educação Ambiental no ecoturismo local pode levar a esforços que não gerem as transformações desejadas, apesar do potencial intrínseco do ambiente natural em proporcionar mudanças de visão e atitudes individuais. Environmental Education in Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism: case study of Serra do Mar State Park, Santa Virgínia Nucleus (SP, Brazil) ABSTRACT This study was conducted in Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Santa Virgínia - SP, site of major ecotourism attractions, being the visitation oriented for trekking and rafting, a practice that occurs in Rio Paraibuna, using boats. Visitors are accompanied by monitors, a favorable environment for the conduct of a case study that seeks to analyze quantitative and qualitative the environmental education in ecotourism and adventure tourism. Questionnaires were applied to tourists, semistructured interviews to environmental monitors, rafting operator and the manager of the conservation unit. Participant observations on the trails and rafting were done. The vast majority of visitors is open for environmental education, to practice ecotourism to have contact with nature and learn something new. It was noticed that there is an effort of the management of Santa Virgínia, and monitors to conduct educational practice during the tours, but there is still no clear definition on the part of those about what would be environmental education. The lack of discussion on the subject and the no perception of the potential and the limitations of environmental education in local ecotourism can lead to efforts that do not generate the desired transformations, despite the intrinsic potential of the natural environment to provide changes in view and in individual attitudes.
