Inclement weather conditions affect the behavior of travelers and transportation system operations. Understanding this influence can help improve operational planning schemes for any mode of transport, especially for buses. One of the factors that can be affected by rainfall is the time expended by a passenger from the moment a bus opens its doors until he/she boards the bus. This time is known as the boarding lost time (BLT); it was first introduced in the last edition of the Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (TCQSM). TCQSM only considers the BLT for bus rapid transit (BRT) stations with more than one berth. Weather conditions are not considered when calculating the current BLT for a BRT system, given the provision of protective shelters over the entire boarding area of such stations. Furthermore, recommendations with regard to the BLT for regular bus stops have not been provided. This paper presents analyses of the BLT for a two-berth regular bus stop under different rainy conditions. The findings demonstrate that the increment in the BLT under heavy rainfall is significantly higher than the difference between the BLTs of Berth 2 and Berth 1 in the absence of rainfall.

This study was done to investigate the relationship between indoor environmental quality and prevalence of Sick Building Syndrome in six small offices inPenangIsland. Indoor environmental quality measurement was conducted according to relevant standards. There are totally Sixty workers were selected to participate in an electronic questionnaire survey. Questionnaire was used to record the comfort level of respondents in the case studies and level of sick building syndrome faced by respondents. Through indoor environmental quality measurement, it is found that most of the offices facing the lighting and noise problem. The result from the questionnaire shows that in overall, the occupants satisfy with their working environment in term of indoor environmental quality although the result also shows the opinions of occupants on dissatisfaction on certain indoor environmental parameter according to case study. The study also found that most of the occupants feel drowsy and fatigue when they work within the offices. Besides, due to the difference of the indoor environmental quality of the buildings, the occupants are suffered from different symptoms of the sick building syndrome.

This paper assesses the operational data of a public transportation system, using the Bus Rapid Transit in Lagos State as a case study. Demographic data was collected through the administration of questionnaires to the commuters; this was carried out to observe variations in the population of the commuters from different perspectives. Some other categories of data were collected which include boarding and alighting, headway, arrival rate of commuters, waiting time of commuters and travel time data. These data were presented and analysed with MS Excel and Minitab statistical softwares. Results from the boarding and alighting data showed bus stops with high flux of commuters, these were at Ojota, Ketu, Mile 12, Costain, CMS and TBS. Probability distribution charts were prepared to analyze the remaining sets of data. This was carried out to study the distribution and consistency of the data. Coefficients of variation for the data were also estimated to study the variability of the data. From the study, the data followed normal distribution and they were consistent such that they can be used for further analysis of the system. It can be concluded that the distribution depicts the real situation at the study location. Thus, bus stops with high density of commuters should be provided with more buses so as to reduce the waiting time of commuters.

The effectiveness of an on-street bus facility depends on the volume of general traffic sharing the buses’ travel lane. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (TCQSM) methodology estimates capacity of a bus facility based on the operation of critical stops. The aim of this study is to understand better the performance of an on-street, mid-block, off-line bus stop by relating bus stop capacity to adjacent lane traffic volume. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, the TCQSM methodology incorporates the effect of adjacent lane traffic volume on bus stop capacity at mid-block bus stops through its effect on re-entry delay, but it does not consider the impact of the bus stop itself on adjacent lane traffic capacity. This paper introduces a novel methodology to estimate the additional time required to accommodate adjacent lane traffic volume under saturated conditions. Second, the TCQSM methodology does not reflect the effect on re-entry delay of a yield-to-bus (YTB) rule, which is mandatory by law in some jurisdictions. This paper modifies the current TCQSM methodology by allowing for the YTB rule. A microscopic simulation model is developed in order to cross-validate the theoretical model developed.

Construction industry involves laborious and hazard work because of its demands it requires energetic and enthusiastic people and this are the attributes that in most cases young people poses. Construction industry stakeholder should shift their attention and prioritize the motivation of its workers since the industry has a way of cubing poverty and uplifting the county’s economy. This study used data from both primary and secondary sources a special focus on leadership and human resource management context. A survey was conducted with managers and employees regarding motivation on construction site were conducted at different parts of Gauteng. Furthermore, employees work because they obtain something that they need from work and that something obtained from work impacts morale, employee motivation, and the quality of life. Workforce motivation affects productivity. Because most of the activities are done under difficult conditions including harsh weather conditions, to make it attractive employees should be motivated to carry out different activities. Motivators should be in place to improve the chances of the industry’s competitiveness both locally and internationally.

Aim:Aim: The purpose of this paper is to identify common mistakes and pitfalls as well as best practices in estimating labor intensity in software projects. The quality of estimations in less experienced teams is often unsatisfactory, as a result of which estimation as part of the software development process is abandoned. The decision is usually justified by misunderstanding "agility". This article is part of the discussion on current trends in estimation, especially in the context of the new "no estimates" approach.Design / Research methods: The publication is a case study based on the experience of a mature development team. The author, on the basis of literature-based estimation techniques, shows good and bad practices, as well as common mistakes in thinking and behavior.Conclusions / findings: The key to correct estimation is: understanding the difference between labor intensity and time, ability to monitor performance, as well as how to analyze staff requirements for the team.Originality / value of the article: The publication helps to master confidence-boosting techniques for any estimation (duration, and indirectly, the cost of software development) where requirements are known, but mainly at the stage of project implementation (design and implementation).Limitations of the research: The work does not address the problems of initial estimation of projects, i.e. the estimation made in the early stages of planning.

Data warehouse (DW) systems provide the best solution for intelligent data analysis and decision-making. Changes applied to data gradually in real life have to be projected to the DW. Slowly changing dimension (SCD) refers to the potential volatility of DW dimension members. The treatment of SCDs has a significant impact over the quality of data analysis. A new SCD type, Type N, is proposed in this research paper, which encapsulates volatile data into historical clusters. Type N preserves complete history of changes, additional tables, columns, and rows are not required, extra join operations are omitted, and surrogate keys are avoided. Type N is implemented and compared to other SCD types. Good candidates for practicing SCDs are spatiotemporal objects (i.e., objects whose shape or geometry evolves slowly over time). The case study used and implemented in this paper concerns shape-shifting constructions (i.e., buildings that respond to changing weather conditions or the way people use them). The results demonstrate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed SCD Type N.

The problem of informal areas in Egypt, despite the difference in these informal areas in terms of location, area, population and the quality of services, they share their suffering from rising population density, insufficiency of basic facilities and services, the spread of environmental pollution and low standard of living. The importance of this research lies in a new problem that hinders planning and executive authorities in the development of informal areas, which is land ownership. This comes in different entities such as private property whither for residents or companies, and central authorities such as the Ministry of Endowments, Railway Authority, State Property, or the Antiquities Authority. the research exposes all of this to reach results and solutions that help the planning and executive authorities in providing services to these areas, and in the implementation of vital projects and development projects.

Land transportation needs are increasing. One of the problems is the uncontrolled number of private vehicles. Buses as public transportation become the right choice to overcome the problem. Bus rapid transit is a fast, convenient, secure and punctual. The research purpose is to know the performance of Trans Bandung Raya Bus (TBRB) based on the policy of Director General of Land Transportation Decision No.SK.687/AJ.206/DRJD/2002 and to analyze the service quality factors of TBRB. The method of service quality assessment is Importance Performance Analysis. The research showed that the total value of TBRB's performance is 23 and based on the performance standards of the Director General of Land Transportation Decision is the "Good" category. The value of TBRB service quality (2.63) is smaller than the expected value (3.31) which means that TBRB have to keep improving their performance. The service quality variables that need to be improved are Empathy and Assurance.
