Botulinum toxin is a potent neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. The toxin inhibits release of neurotransmitter, causing muscle paralysis. There are several serotypes, A to G, all of molecular weight about 150,000. The protein exists as a single chain or or as two chains, with two disulfide linkages. In a recent investigation on intracellular action of neurotoxins it was reported that type B neurotoxin can inhibit the release of Ca++-activated [3H] norepinephrine only if the disulfide bonds are reduced. In order to investigate possible structural changes in the toxin upon reduction of the disulfide bonds, we have prepared two-dimensional crystals of reduced type B neurotoxin. These two-dimensional crystals will be compared with those of the native (unreduced) type B toxin.


The first case of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Lithuania, diagnosed by clinical and epidemiologic criteria only, was reported in 1953. A forest worker became ill with the disease in April after a tick bite, had a typical clinical presentation with shoulder girdle muscle paralysis and bulbar syndrome, and died after 12 days from the start of clinical symptoms. Autopsy data were compatible with viral encephalitis.1 Serological diagnosis of TBE in Lithuania was started in 1970.2

Background: Chronic osteomyelitis mandibula is one of the complications from dental extraction. Inadequate wound handling can have an impact on the spread of infection in the surrounding tissue like nerve which results in facial nerve paralysis. The purpose is to present a rare case that facilitative nerve paralysis as a result of the spread of osteomyelitis infectionCase Management: A 69 years old woman with chief complains numbness onher lips accompanied by pus out beside the lower teeth. No sistemic disease. Panoramic radiograph showed abnormal bone-like sequester. Extraoral examination appeared the bluish color on the right cheek and there was right facial muscle paralysis. Debridement, sequesterectomy by general anesthesia and medication using ceftriaxone intravenous, ketorolac injection, multivitamin, and corticosteroid, physiotherapy for facial nerve paralyze, also.Discussion: Pathogenesis mandibular osteomyelitis involves contiguous spreadfrom an odontogenic focus infection. The bacteria produce an exotoxin, which, while unable to cross the blood-brain barrier, can have deleterious effects on thePeripheral Nerve System (Fasialis Nerve) in up to 75% of cases, with the severity of presentation correlating with the severity of the infection.Conclusion: Chronic mandibular osteomyelitis can spread the infection to around another anatomy oral cavity like facials nerves.

Objective: The aim of this study is to know the biological therapy drugs that are related to adverse events, what dental treatments are associated with the appearance of these events, their severity, and how they are resolved. Study design: Analysis of cases described in the literature on patients undergoing treatment with biological therapies who have developed adverse effects associated with these drugs. Results: Of the 62 articles reviewed, 49 describe 68 cases of MRONJ, most of which appeared in the jaw and received surgical and/or conservative treatment. Conclusions: Biological therapies can potentially develop adverse effects in the oral cavity, so strict monitoring by the dentist is necessary.

Our laboratory previously reported that active glottal closure was present in 90% of spontaneous central apneas in premature lambs while maintaining a high-apneic lung volume (Renolleau S, Letourneau P, Niyonsenga T, and Praud JP. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 159: 1396–1404, 1999.) The present study aimed at testing whether this mechanism limits postapnea oxygen desaturation. Four premature lambs were instrumented for recording states of alertness, thyroarytenoid muscle and diaphragm electromyographic (EMG) activity, nasal airflow, lung volume changes, and pulse oximetry. One thousand four hundred fifty-two spontaneous central apneas (isolated or during periodic breathing) were analyzed in nonsedated lambs. Apneas, with high lung volume maintained by active glottal closure, were compared with apneas, with a tracheostomy opened at apnea onset. Oxygen desaturation slopes were lower when high-apneic lung volume was actively maintained during both wakefulness and quiet sleep. Furthermore, oxygen desaturation slopes were lower after isolated apneas with continuous thyroarytenoid EMG during wakefulness, compared with apneas with noncontinuous thyroarytenoid EMG (= glottis opened shortly after apnea onset). These results highlight the importance of maintaining high-alveolar oxygen stores during central apneas by active glottal closure to limit desaturation in newborns.
