OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between locus of control and knowledge, attitude and practice regarding pill and condom use among university students. METHODS: The inquiry was developed in Campinas, a city in Southeastern Brazil, in 2006. A total of 295 adolescent newcomers to a public university answered a structured questionnaire and Levenson's multidimensional locus of control scale. The scores of the dimensions of locus of control were calculated and Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to assess their correlation with knowledge and practice concerning pill and condom use. In order to assess the relationship between the dimensions of locus of control and sociodemographic variables and variables related to the individuals' sex life, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used. RESULTS: Male adolescents had higher scores of powerful others externality when compared to female adolescents (p=0.01). Students living alone had lower internality (p=0.01). When locus of control was compared to condom use in the first intercourse, considering only the 102 students who informed the age of the beginning of sexual activity, greater internality was found among male adolescents who did not use condoms (p<0.05). When the locus of control scores were correlated with contraceptive knowledge and practice, it was found that the higher the powerful others externality locus, the lower the adequate use of contraceptive methods (r = -0.22, p=0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The powerful others externality locus influences the practice of contraceptive use in this group of adolescents.

Objective: To analyze the level of health literacy regarding prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and studied the relationship between the health literacy and sexual experience of Vocational students in health region 7, Thailand. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using questionnaires. The questionnaires consisted of questions on health literacy and sexual experiences. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests to analyze the relationship between health literacy and sexual experiences. Results: The present study participants comprised of 364 vocational students, 220 (60.4%) male students, and 144 (39.6%) female students. Almost half of the male students (47.3%) had sexual relationship by the age of 15.8 years (SD 1.7), 98.1% of them had their first sexual relationship with their girlfriends, and 81.7% used condoms. Meanwhile, 31.3% of the female students had sexual relationship by the age of 15.7 years (SD 1.3), all of them had first sexual relationship with their boyfriends, and 88.9% used condoms. Most students had low health literacy level, which included 79.5% of the male students and 62.5% of female students. There was significant relationship between sexual experience and health literacy in STD prevention in both male and female students (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study found that the health literacy in the prevention of STDs was low among the participants. Therefore, education and health care sector should be aware of the situation and jointly develop health education programs in the prevention of STDs for the vocational students and teenagers. ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the factors related to inadequate practice of the Papanicolaou test among women in northeastern Brazil. Method: cross-sectional study using a KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICE inquiry, performed from June to October, 2013, with 240 women aged between 24 and 59 years. Results: inadequacies were observed, particularly in knowledge, because, despite having information about the examination, it was only used to detect sexually transmitted infections. Regarding the issue of practice, it was noted that single women and those up to 29 years of age were more likely to present inadequate practice than the older and married women, increasing the likelihood of developing cervical cancer. The greater difficulty for performing the examination was the lack of materials (68.1%). Conclusion: clarification for women regarding the examination requires effective communication between the users and health professionals, as well as guarantees and support for the continuity of care by managers.

Background: Young students can play a fundamental role in blood donation to save lives of many people. Therefore, studying factors contributing to their knowledge, attitude and practice of blood donation is essential.Aims and Objectives: To evaluate the knowledge and attitude of Basrah University students about blood donation.Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study involved students of two colleges in Basrah University. It was carried out during the period from January to April 2017. A non-probability purposive sampling method was used in selecting the participants for this study. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge and attitude towards blood donation were collected through a structured self-administered questionnaire.Results: A total of 422 students were targeted, of these 393 (93.1%) completed the questionnaire.Only 51 (13%) of total respondents had a history of blood donation, of those 64.7% donated only once. The most mentioned reasons behind not donating were; not being asked to donate (24.6%), inconsideration of donation (11.1%), and fear of drawing blood (8.8%). Adequate knowledge was detected in 66.7% and positive attitude in 68.7%. Students of College of Medicine were younger, more knowledgeable, and donate more than those of College of Administration and Economics.Conclusion: A substantial number of the university students had inadequate blood donation knowledge. Education programs and motivational campaigns should be enhanced.Asian Journal of Medical Sciences Vol.9(6) 2018 62-67
