In this paper, the flow, heat transfer and stress during solidification process of the machine tool bed weighed about 2.5ton that has been optimized by structural topologymethod, was calculated with ProCAST software, and the causes of the crack forming in the casting of the machine tool bed was analysed. According to the calculation results, the structural design of the local part where cracks tends to form has been improved, and the heat transfer and the stress are calculated again. By comparing the temperature field with filling of molten cast iron and without filling, it has been found that there was little effect of filling on the results of temperature distribution of the cast, therefore the effect of filling can be ignored in the following temperature field calculation to save computation time. The model has been simplified in the stress field calculation with considering the complexity of the machine tool bed and the cost of computation. Then, the merits and demerits of the original design and the improved design are compared and analyzed depending on the calculated temperature and stress results. It is suggested that the improved one could get a more uniform temperature distribution and then the trend of the crack occurring can be greatly reduced. These results could provide a guide for the actual casting production, achieving the scientific control of the production of castings, ensuring the quality of the castings.

At present, pulley produced in China has been able to meet the demand of domestic and international markets. But there are many problem of the pulley industry in our country, such as too many production enterprises and the low level of export products. And as components of drive system are light weight and raw material price of pulley casting are rising, manufacturing requirements of the pulley are also more and more high. Aiming at the casting defects of pulley that enterprise current product, pulley casting blank model of common material HT250 be made by three-dimension software, numerical simulation of filling and solidification process for pulley sand casting by the casting simulation software Procast, the size and location of the various casting defects were forecasted and analyzed, reflecting the pulley filling and solidification process of the actual situation, due to the thicker pulley rim and less heat dissipation, position of shrinkage is close to the middle of rim [, a method of eliminating defects is proposed to realize sequential solidification, and thus to minimize porosity shrinkage and improve casting performance and reduce casting time and reduce production costs.

COVID-19 brought several management problems, and among these surely the topic of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) turned out to be crucial. Indeed, in the light of mandatory measurements adopted by governments both for private individuals and companies, their demand has rapidly increased, thus generating shortages, increased waste and unbalanced prices. In response to that, many industrial fields offered their tools and know-how for trying to partly face this issue, and in this paper part of a solution of this kind is presented. Specifically, it is meant the redesign of a food oven produced by an Italian company operating in the food sector (Nilma S.p.A.) for thermal sanitization against the virus in question. In this paper, the simulation of the temperature distribution inside the chamber is simulated, with subsequent experimental validation at 95°C.

The aim of the paper is to present the possibilities of computational simulations for the casting of aluminum matrix composite (AlMMC) reinforced with ceramics based on experimental data. The comparison of simulation and experimental results concerned the solidification process i.e. the course of solidification, temperature distribution and final arrangement of reinforcement particles. First, we have performed the experimental gravity casting of the aluminum matrix alloy AK12 (AlSi12CuNiMg2) and the composites AK12/SiC and AK12/Cg reinforced with silicon carbide SiC and glass carbon Cg, respectively, into the sand mold. During the experiment we have recorded the temperature using the ThermaCAM photometer system as well as in the selected point inside the sand mold. Using experimental data we have carried out the numerical calculations according to the methods and procedures contained in the program ANSYS Fluent 13. We have based the simulations on the two-dimensional model in which the Volume of Fluid (VOF) and enthalpy methods have been applied. The former is to describe two-phase system (air-composite matrix free surface, volume fraction of particular continuous phase) and the latter shows modeling of the solidification process of the alloy and composite matrix. We have used the Discrete Phase Model (DPM) to depict the presence of reinforcement particles. The assumption of the appropriate values of simulation parameters has shown that the simulation results are convergent with experimental ones. We have observed a similar course of the composite solidification (temperature change at the designated point), the temperature distribution and the arrangement of reinforcement particles for the simulation and experiment.

In this paper, by using the commercial finite-element software of ProCAST, unidirectional solidification processes in 23t steel ingot were simulated. Emphasis is placed on analysis of required time for complete solidification of steel ingot and temperature distribution about ingot and side wall during the solidification process. By comparing simulation values and measured values of side wall during the solidification process, the simulated results conclusively demonstrate that our developed model is feasible and valuable.

This experimental study focused mainly on the solidification of a binary mixture of ammonium chloride and water (NH4Cl-H2O) in a differentially heated cavity. One vertical wall is cooled at temperature TC, and the opposite vertical wall is kept at constant temperature TH = +20°C. The effect on the solidification process of the initial concentration of ammonium chloride and cooling conditions is examined. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used for the visualization of the dynamic field during the solidification process. The temperature distribution at discrete locations in the solution and on the vertical cooling wall was monitored using thermocouples. The convection flow patterns, the ice thickness, and the temperature distribution were obtained for various initial concentrations of ammonium chloride ranging from 0wt% to 20wt% (sub-eutectic and near-eutectic growth). The convection patterns obtained for different initial concentrations showed significant differences. The results showed that the process of solidification is slower with an increase in the initial concentration levels of the binary solution. The ice growth rate was almost double at the bottom of the cavity.
