Today modular construction is gaining popularity in the arrangement of production facilities. The purpose of the research is the theoretical substantiation of the choice of the optimal thickness of thermal insulation for external protections of modular buildings taking into account the evaluation criteria based on the method of hierarchy analysis. The article reflects the possibility of using modular buildings for residential and public needs. Given the peculiarities of the use of thermal insulation materials, such structures are erected in a short period of time due to the use of ready-made modules. It is also proposed to use multicriteria analysis to compare different thicknesses of thermal insulation of a modular building. The obtained results are presented in the form of petal diagrams and diagrams of global priorities, which made it possible to make an in-depth assessment of several thicknesses of thermal insulation. When conducting theoretical research, it should be noted that the importance of each of the criteria was taken into account for the selection of thermal insulation. An expert assessment was performed to determine the thickness of thermal insulation, which can be used for lightweight prefabricated structures of modular buildings. As a result of research, it was found that the most suitable thermal insulation material is polyurethane.

Food waste (FW) has a high potential for use in biological processes such as anaerobic digestion (AD), especially due to its high content of biodegradable organic matter. To inoculate the reactors, sludge is usually used. The sludge should ideally have good sedimentation and specific methanogenic activity (SMA), which is typical for granular sludge. However, in a Latin American context, the most available and accessible sludges are flocculants with low sedimentation and SMA. Applying technological surveillance between 1975 and 2017, using multicriteria analysis techniques such as analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and consulting with international and national experts, we observed that there were few studies, compared to published studies on the substrates that focused on improving inoculum quality through conditioning to improve its characteristics and maximize methane production. The inoculum-conditioning methodologies identified were grouped into five categories, being the main strategy the addition of nutrients followed by anaerobic digestion with an easily degradable substrate. However, extension of technological surveillance is recommended by incorporating the results published from significant events in the field of anaerobic digestion, such as the Latin American Workshop and Symposium on Anaerobic Digestion and the World Congress on Anaerobic Digestion.

The choice of the most beneficial road alignment variant is a multicriteria issue, based on transport, economic, social and environmental criteria. The criteria chosen for a multicriteria analysis can be expressed through measurable or immeasurable parameters. In order to compare and assess the variants it is necessary to normalize the criteria, which means a rescaling of their value, so that the criteria values fall into a specific range. The main aim of normalization is to assign an identical weight to each criterion in relation to other criteria. This article presents a review of the influence of criteria normalization methods and the variant assessment methods on the choice of the most beneficial road alignment variant on the example of the bypass of the town of Księżyno, which is a stretch of Regional Road 678 near Bialystok. Four variants of road alignment were compared and their ranking was created using six assessment methods. It was proven that the choices of the criteria normalization method as well as the variant assessment method both have signifi­cant influence on the result of the multicriteria analysis in the decision-making process of selecting the road alignment.

Although there is technical information on the efficiency of advanced oxidation technologies (TAOs) at the laboratory level, in some cases at the pilot level and few on a large scale, it is not easy to select the most appropriate technology for an effluent, since the selection of technology depends on the characteristics of the contaminated water. Through the application of the multicriteria analysis technique, this article proposes a scale of TAOs for the complementary treatment of water contaminated with contaminants emergent (CE). The chosen alternatives were the technologies with peroxide (H2O2), Ozone (O3) and Fenton (Fe/H2O2) processes, the evaluation criteria were electric energy consumption (EEO), technological maturity level, complexity of design / operation and cost of operation. The technology most recommended by AHP is ozone and peroxide / UV with a difference of 8.6% in the frequency in the evaluation of the criteria. For the AHP-TOPSIS methodology, peroxide / UV is the key technology over ozone with a difference of 31.4% in the frequency of selection.

The paper describes the Demonstration System suggested by the authors. This Demonstration System enables efficient performance of alternative life-time process planning, multicriteria assessment, utility degree determination and selection of the most efficient versions of various projects and their constituent parts: Determination of rational design solutions for walls, windows, roof structures, basement floor, heating system. Selection of rational constituent parts of a project (selection of construction site and location, multipurpose complex assessment of buildings, determination of rational types of contracts). Selection of efficient interested parties (contractors, suppliers, neighbours). Alternative designing of life-time process of a project (one-family dwelling houses; agricultural, cast-in-place, prefabricated panel, and thermal renovation of buildings), its multicriteria assessment, determination of utility degree and selection of the most efficient version: Determination of efficient investment projects. Preparation of recommendations on efficiency increase of projects. Alternative roof-to-basement designing of a building (one-family dwelling houses; agricultural, cast-in-place, prefabricated panel, and thermal renovation of buildings) and its multicriteria analysis. This Demonstration System enables to perform alternative designing of projects and their constituent parts, multicriteria analysis, determination of utility degree and priority and preparation of recommendations on further improvement of projects. The Demonstration System is composed of two main parts: knowledge and decisionmaking subsystem. The knowledge base contains information (system and subsystems of criteria, values and significance of criteria, etc.) fully characterizing life-time processes of various projects (investments, buildings and so forth) and their constituent parts. For instance, knowledge base of life-time process of constituent parts of a building consists of information on alternative construction sites, buildings, designers, contractors, suppliers and so on. A construction site can be described by the following system of criteria: cost, assessment of existing services (water supply, sewerage, gas, electric power supply), air contamination level, living expenses, shopping possibilities, assessment of possibilities for recreation, sports and medical care, possibility to find a job, development outlooks of the district, transport conveniences, etc. The composed knowledge base is processed in various sections by decision-making subsystem. The multicriteria analysis of received results is performed by decision-making subsystem two. The Demonstration System is used by Bachelors, Engineers and Masters while working on their term and final projects. The paper gives a more detailed analysis of the proposed System. There is presented one of works performed by means of the Demonstration System.

The peculiarity of innovative products requires taking into account a large number of criteria that should be aggregated into generalized ones and building a convolution tree with qualitative, quantitative and fuzzy rules. The paper proposes a methodology for the optimal partitioning of criteria scales into generalized gradations for using combined methods of multicriteria analysis of alternatives. The transition to fewer criteria leads to a signifi cant increase in the dimension of the scales of generalized criteria. Scales have to be converted to new scales with fewer gradations. To solve the problem of minimizing the information loss occurring when converting the scales picked Bellman function and applied method of dynamic programming. Computational experiments have shown the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The socio-economic objectives of transport projects are generally related to the improvement of travel conditions for goods and passengers as well as the improvement of the quality of the environment and the wellbeing of the served population. Railways infrastructure projects are always complex because of the many variables involved. In railway rehabilitation, in particular, social, economic and environmental variables take on considerable importance. These variables contribute strongly to the selection of the intervention project to be performed. Historically, multicriteria evaluation methods were developed to select the best alternative from a set of competing options. Multicriteria Analysis is applied for comparison of alternative projects, allowing taking into account different criteria simultaneously. It presents a framework in which all the stakeholders can participate actively in the process of decision making and in the explicit resolution of problems. The paper intends to frame the multicriteria analysis with the purpose of its implementation in railway investment projects concerning rehabilitation interventions. In this sense, its importance and potential will be highlighted for several stakeholders in the decision-making process, as well as the objectives and criteria definition for a practical implementation.

Controlling contaminant plumes in groundwater using pump and treat or hydraulic and physical barriers is a common practice to contain and reduce solute contaminants in remediation activities. Recent evolution in engineering techniques also allowed to extend the number of solutions that can be designed and set in practice. As such, the decision-making process assumes great importance in leading the selection of the best suitable technology for a certain case study. This process has to take into account technical, environmental and socioeconomic factors. This paper presents the results of a research project aimed at defining a multi-criteria procedure analysis to support the decision-making process in the barrier technology selection, taking into account technical, economic, social and environmental factors. A multi-criteria analysis methodology has been defined to provide a quantitative tool to guide the selection of the best suitable technology concerning a specific case. The methodology was applied to a real case, selected from many case studies based on data availability and quality, in order to verify the effectiveness of the procedure in evaluating the alternative selections and to highlight the differences between the results of the multi-criteria analysis and the real engineers choices. A sensitivity analysis was performed to analyze the influence of each criterion on the final result of the study. With this paper we aim to start a discussion to deepen the decision making process, in order to develop methodologies allowing to chose the best solution without subjective evaluations.
