This article discusses linguistic and cultural aspects of translation of modern American gonzo-reporting on the example of the book written by Thompson Hunter, who is father founder of genre “gonzo”. The genre “gonzo” appeared first in the USA within the new branch of journalism, which is called “New Journalism” and it developed there as well. Gonzo-reporting is a type of a text, where author uses subjective 1st person narration. He actively participates in the event that he describes. Gonzo-text has its specific stylistic and linguistic peculiarities, due to the fact that author speaks mind freely, uses humor, sarcasm, irony, jargons, slangs etc. Gonzo-texts contain deep descriptions of many details, explanations to author’s actions in reality. The translator’s main aim in translation of gonzo-reporting is to conduct adequate translation form linguistic and cultural aspects.The article provides a comparative and contrastive analysis of translations and the original; it discusses various approaches and criticism to the translation text.

The presented article is aimed at elaborating the problem of the peculiarities of translating English advertising slogans into Ukrainian. The corpus of the research was formed on the basis of the advertising slogans widely circulating in the USA. The main objective of the paper consists in defining the basic strategies and tactics of rendering slogans as subtype of commercials with the preservation of the both semantic and pragmatic components. The results of the carried-out research have proved that there exist common strategies and tactics, allowing to perform adequate and faithful translation from the typologically different English language into Ukrainian. The practical value of the research lies in the fact that the conclusions may be applied in the translation activity. The urgency of this paper arises from the need for efficient strategies and tactics of translating different types of texts in contemporary translation studies. The object of the work is the translation of advertising slogans viewed in the aspect of its faithfulness and adequacy. The subject are strategies, tactics and operations of translating English advertising slogans into Ukrainian. The immediate tasks of the article have been predetermined by the above-mentioned objective and include respectively: the disclosure of the specifics of slogans in the contrasted languages (English and Ukrainian); the outline of the typologically common strategies, tactics and operations of translating slogans. The methodology of this research involved the inductive, the deductive method and the method of contrastive analysis. In the course of the research it has been concluded and experimentally and statistically proved that there exist common strategies, tactics and operations of translating slogans into different languages. It has also been postulated that the pragmatic and the expressive potential of slogans is preserved and rendered in translation. The perspective is seen in reviewing this issue in different Rhaeto-Romanic, Germanic and Slavic languages.

The presented article is aimed at elaborating the problem of the peculiarities of translating amateur prose from typologically different languages, in particular from French, German and English into Ukrainian. The corpus of the research was formed on the basis of the amateur prose writings on the official sites in Belgium, Germany, the USA and Ukraine. The main objective of the paper consists in defining the basic strategies and tactics of rendering amateur writings of different genres with the preservation of the both semantic and pragmatic components. The results of the carried-out research have proved that there exist common strategies and tactics, allowing to perform adequate and faithful translation from the typologically different Rhaeto-Romanic (French) and Germanic (English, German) languages into the Slavic ones (Ukrainian). The literary translator as a cultural mediator The translation process is an intercultural transfer that does not only take place between two languages, but between two cultures, as the source and target text are each embedded in a communicative situation in their respective cultures. The literary translator is thus faced with the problem of how to handle the cultural aspects implicit in a source text, and of choosing the most suitable technique to convey these aspects to the target text successfully while keeping in mind the characteristics of the intended readers. The translator can thus be regarded as a cultural mediator who facilitates communication and understanding between people or groups who differ with regard to language and culture. The various culture-specific words and concepts in Dalene Matthee’s “Fiela se kind” have far-reaching implications for translation. The extent to which the translator – Matthee herself – succeeded in functioning as a cultural mediator in “Fiela’s child” is investigated in this article by means of contrastive analysis. It is argued that a decisive loss of meaning and emotional value occured during the translation process to the detriment of the target text as a literary work. The contention of this article is that Matthee’s way of handling translation problems on a microstructural level brought about macrotextual semantic shifts in the target text, and that she did not succeed in fulfilling her role as a cultural mediator at all the levels of the text.

The relevance of studying the works of Petro Potapenko, one of the leading representatives of the Ukrainian music culture of the XX century, is conditioned by the general focus of the modern humanitaristics on the creative activity of emigrants and the efforts to return their artistic heritage to the national listener. The purpose of this paper is to define the special features of Petro Potapenko’s works in the context of development of the Ukrainian music culture of the XX century in diaspora. The research is carried out using a set of interdisciplinary methods, including, inter alia, a method of historical reconstruction which helps reproduce the mentality and reality of that time based on fragmentary data; biographical method — for the interpretation of facts from Petro Potapenko’s life; methods of sociological research that allow to view music and performance art in interaction with social practices etc. The results. We have studied the personal and artistic path of Petro Potapenko, Ukrainian bandurist, composer, choir conductor, member and art director of Taras Shevchenko Bandurist Chorus (1950–1964), founder of the first female bandurist ensemble in the Western diaspora called Girls’ Bandura Chorus of the Ukrainian Youth Association (1956). Over the years of its existence (1950s–1980s), the Girls’ Bandura Chorus led by Petro Potapenko gave 59 independent concerts and 82 performances in the largest Ukrainian communities in the USA and Canada. The most prominent of them is the 1964 concert that commemorated the unveiling ceremony of Taras Shevchenko’s monument (Washington). During many decades, bandurist ensembles conducted by Petro Potapenko had been powerful centers of Ukrainian bandura art, promoting the national music culture by giving concerts, holding topical events and performing with a Shevchenko program as well as publishing gramophonic records and albums. The topicality. We have tried to characterize the influence of the social and cultural space and cultural and artistic environment on the formation of Petro Potapenko’s creative personality. The practical research. We have analyzed the historical and cultural aspects of the artist’s works in the context of the abovementioned ensembles and provided academic circles with poorly known biographical facts. We have defined Petro Potapenko’s contribution to the development of the Ukrainian music culture and bandura art in the US diaspora as well as the meaning of his activity to the Ukrainian culture of the XX century on the whole.

Teaching English to students from an Asian cultural background presents unique challenges. This article uses the author’s experience of studying and teaching in China and working with Asian students in a multicultural context in the USA to identify persistent challenges, share the reasons that she believes are behind these challenges and offer practical solutions that instructors can use in their classroom today. Although the focus is primarily on Chinese students, the information might also be useful for ESL teachers working with other Asian learners. This article brings to attention cultural aspects rather than linguistic aspects.

The price elasticity of demand enables to set the real “correct price” to the seller guaranteeing the highest income. Despite the fact that the price elasticity of demand is very important in the economic practice, no work that would deal with it in greater details seems to be elaborated till now. The available sources show practically only and exclusively coefficients of the price elasticity of demand in the United States. These coefficients can naturally be utilized, but for certain goods only (e.g. salt, etc.), where the demand is the same irrespectively of where we find ourselves globally. There are certain products and services where the demand is determined by the socio-cultural aspects following from certain traditions of the country in question. The values established for conditions of the Czech Republic are certainly available nowadays, but with respect to expensiveness and scope of these researches we cannot consider them comparable with the results from the USA.Objective of this paper is to draw curves of demand of 20 commonly used commodities in the Czech Republic and to determine coefficients of the price elasticity of demand afterwards, from which the basic recommendations for their sellers will follow. In light of the facts above comparison of these coefficients with the data from the USA would be very interesting to be able to create the picture about dissimilarities in demand of the average Czech and American consumer.
