Abstract. The presented "open" composite left-handed/right-handed (CRHLH) substrate integrated waveguide performs well as a low-profile leaky wave antenna. This design is distinguished due to the fact that it is derived from the approved equivalent circuit model of the H10 rectangular hollow waveguide mode. The wave propagation behaviour is visualised by the dispersion diagram calculated by two different methods, infinite periodic full-wave simulation and Matrix-Pencil analysis of driven field solutions. The periodic configuration is also analysed in terms of the Bloch impedance. Although FR-4 serves as substrate the antenna features an efficiency of about 50% to 60%. The radiation performance demonstrates nearly backfire to almost endfire scanning capability of the antenna by mere frequency variation. Broadside radiation is possible due to the balanced state at 4 GHz.

This paper presents a novel leaky-wave antenna based on the Half-Mode Substrate Integrated Waveguide (HMSIW) structure with low side lobe level. The effect of the structural parameters of the LWAs on the radiation performances is studied. Using beam-forming technique, the leakage loss factorαalong the radiation aperture is designed in a tapered way by controlling the aperture depth along the structure. This controls the radiated power along the antenna aperture and finally achieves the radiation pattern with low SLL. Furthermore, the antenna structure is optimized to get an even lower SLL.

In order to facilitate the integration of active devices, a leaky-wave antenna (LWA) based on corrugated substrate integrated waveguide (CSIW) structure is proposed. By introducing rectangular ring slots on the CSIW structure, the proposed LWA is capable of beam scanning from backward to forward. The rectangular ring slots do not only enable energy leaking but also provide series capacitance. In addition, the grounded vias and quarter-wave open-circuit stubs provide shunt inductance. Thus, the proposed CSIW exhibits left-handed characteristic which enables beam scanning through the broadside. To further facilitate the design and suppress open-stopband of beam scanning antenna based on CSIW structure, an equivalent circuit model is developed and the relationships between structure parameters and the equivalent circuit parameters are presented. Based on this design guide, a leaky wave antenna is designed with radiation angle ranging from −53° to 23°. This proposed novel CSIW LWA has great potential in tunable or reconfigurable antenna design due to its ease of integration with active devices.
