The Current Status of JPL’s SmallSat Developments

<p>Abstract -The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has been at the forefront of finding ways to deliver big science returns in small packages.  This talk will describe the current state of missions and capabilities across the mission lifecycle from early concept formulation and implementation through on-orbit operations.  From examining how we use concurrent engineering tools, processes and teams for the development of small instruments as well as complete missions, this talk will focus on expanding the capabilities of science using small spacecraft to enable missions for Planetary Science, Astrophysics, Heliophysics and Earth Science. Highlighted key technologies and science measurements will be described.</p>

<p>Both the IPCC and the 2017 US Decadal Survey for Earth Science and Applications have recognized atmospheric profiling as an immediate priority, as proper representation of the Earth’s vertical atmosphere is imperative to close gaps in our understanding of processes that impact severe weather, air quality, and climate change. Radio Occultation (RO) techniques have been recognized for their uniqueness to provide reference datasets, triggering a growing interest in using RO for Climate and Weather applications.</p><p> At the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), physical parameters such as refractivity and derived atmospheric products (temperature, pressure, moisture) are obtained by applying inversion methodologies on the atmospheric delay induced on the occulted signal. Such multi-mission retrieval system has generated nearly two decades of observations and allowed the generation of Global Navigation Satellite Systems Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) monthly gridded data for climate model evaluation and other applications (Obs4MIPS). </p><p>We present an overview of data and methodology involved in producing Obs4MIPS GNSS-RO data, and show current improvements in the legacy products by comparison against the next generation of JPL’s monthly gridded data (Level 3) products.  Also, we evaluate the performance of the products against reanalysis datasets, and demonstrate its capability to detect climate signals and to improve our understanding of weather processes. Additionally, we will discuss ongoing activities associated with the incorporation of the recently launched COSMIC-2 data into our system.</p>

The current situation in the sphere of district heating is analysed on the basis of use of the cognitive approach. The presence of closed chains of cause-effect relationships of negative factors and conflicts of target settings of the subjects in the field of district heating is shown. The conceptual model of energy efficient modernization of district heating systems is proposed. This model includes indicators of the current status of heat sources, networks and heat consumers, energetic and economic models, restrictions, procedure of forming and analysis of the mutual influence of the recommended projects. The quantitative data on indicators of the current state of district heating systems of the cities of Ukraine are presented. The interrelation between indicators of the current state and projects of energy efficient modernization of district heating systems is shown. Assessment of energy self-sufficiency of municipal district heating systems on condition of thermal modernization of buildings is carried out. The creation of energy management systems at the district heating enterprises is proposed. Bib. 6, Fig. 7, Tab. 5.

The International conference “Flora and conservation in the Caucasus: history and current state of knowledge” dedicated to the 130-year anniversary of the Perkalsky Arboretum took place at 22–25 of May 2019 in Pyatigorsk (Stavropol Territory) on the base of the Pyatigorsk Museum of local lore and natural history. The participants were from 11 cities of Russia and 7 Republics of the Caucasus and represented 14 institutions. Proceedings of the conference were published by the beginning of the meeting the book of abstracts includes 49 papers on the study of vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and fungi, plant communities, as well as the protection of rare and endangered species, unique plant communities, and ecological problems in the Caucasus. The following geobotanical topics were highlighted in 13 papers: forest communities (3 reports), meadow and steppe vegetation (2), xeric open forests (2), communities of ecotone areas (1), structure of populations of rare plant species (3), as well as the history and current status of nature protected areas (2). The great emphasis has been focused on the study of floristic composition and plant populations. Thus, the conference showed that very few studies от vegetation are currently carried out in the Caucasus, and a lot of districts are not affected by the research. The greatest attention is paid to forest vegetation while meadow, steppe, alpine heath and xerophytic communities are studied rather poorly. Besides, there are “white spots” — mire, floodplain and aquatic vegetation. In nowadays, when the anthropogenic impact on the plant cover of the Caucasus is intensively increasing, it is especially important to study natural undisturbed communities preserved in protected natural areas. Another important issue is the conservation of the unique vegetation cover of the whole Caucasus. Thus, the study of vegetation of this region opens a wide field for researchers using various methods of modern plant science.

the article analyzes the influence of cultural, social, religious, scientific and technical factors on the histori-cal development, current status and future directions of development of the architecture of medical institu-tions in Yemen. The research attempted to study the features of the work of medical institutions in Yemen. The study begins with a description of the literature on a general overview of the location, geographic sec-tions, climate and economy of the port city of Yemen. The study describes the problems and factors that influence the design of medical institutions in Yemen. The current situation demonstrates a tendency to-wards centralization of attention on the patient himself and the doctor-patient system. The hospital should create the most comfortable conditions for the patient, and the medical staff acts as consultants. That is, pa-tients should receive maximum attention, sympathy and psychological assistance. Based on this position, architectural decisions should take into account the relationship between the doctor and the patient. The ar-chitectural design of medical facilities in hot climates should be carried out taking into account the regional characteristics of the environment. The choice of a construction site for the architectural and planning organ-ization of a network of medical institutions for children and adults must be made based on the general con-ditions for the development of the city and its suburban area. The theoretical and methodological basis of the study are the provisions and conclusions of the works of domestic and foreign scientists in the field of development of the architecture of medical institutions. The research used materials from scientific seminars and conferences. In the process of research, a systematic approach and logical analysis methods were used. The scientific literature notes that the modern concept of the formation of the architectural and spatial environment of urban hospitals is associated with modern medical technologies, as well as with the increasing role of medical institutions at the present stage.
