Data-driven multi-step AO de-aliasing (DMD) for GRACE/GRACE-FO

<p>The GRACE-FO’s mission primary goal is the precise mapping of variations within the Earth’s hydrology by observing changes in gravitational attraction. This particular signal, however, is widely superimposed by other signals of higher amplitudes and shorter time scales like mass redistributions within atmosphere and ocean (AO). The hereby induced temporal aliasing is treated by reducing tidal background models during the data processing. The residual signal which is caused by imperfections of the background models has so far been left untreated.</p> <p>We present the DMD approach for further treatment of the residual AO-signal which is somewhat similar to the so-called Wiese parametrization proposed for multi-pair missions (Wiese et al., 2011). However, contrary to Wiese, the DMD directly affects the right-hand side of the least squares adjustment. The method consists of (a) estimating short-term low-degree fields based on the full observation vector in a first step, (b) reducing it by the observations computed from the short-term solutions (thus effectively having applied an entirely data-based de-aliasing model), and finally, (c) estimating a high-degree field over the entire observation period (e.g. a month). Resubstituting the mean of (a) to (c) then yields a gravity solution for the observation interval. The functionality of the DMD is verified by simulations and allows for an improved retrieval of the residual signal above the maximum degree of the short-term fields over the observation interval. In order to counteract potential over-estimation within the low-degree part of the solution additional conditions are introduced and discussed.</p>

This paper develops a short-term model of a small open financially repressed economy characterised by unorganised money markets, intermediate goods imports, capital mobility and flexible exchange rates. The analysis shows that financial liberalisation, in the form of increased rate of interest on deposits and tight monetary policy, causes deflation for an economy with a high degree of capital mobility. However, for economies with a low degree of capital mobility, the possibility of stagflation cannot be ruled out. These results suggest that financial liberalisation in the form of lower reserve requirements should be recommended for economies with restricted transactions in the capital account.

Over a 4-year investigation period we studied the effects of more or less intense pruning on short-term diameter growth and stem form of trees in avenues and parks. While a low degree of pruning hardly has any effect on diameter growth, a high degree of pruning leads to a loss of diameter growth and cylindricality. A high degree of pruning,directly effects assimilation capacity, thereby reducing foliage area and indirectly disturbs internal physiological processes.

Payday loans are small-amount, short-term, unsecured, high-cost credit contracts provided by non-mainstream credit providers. Payday loans are usually taken out to help the consumer pay for essential items, such as food, rent, electricity, petrol, broken-down appliances or car registration or repairs. These consumers take out payday loans because they cannot — or believe that they cannot — obtain a loan from a mainstream credit provider such as a bank. In recent years there has been a protracted debate in Australia — and in several overseas jurisdictions — about how to regulate the industry. Recent amendments to the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 (Cth) — referred to in this article as the 2013 reforms — are designed to better protect payday loan consumers. While the 2013 reforms provide substantially improved protection for payday loan consumers, further changes to the law may be warranted. This article raises several law reform issues which should be considered as part of the 2015 review into small amount credit contracts, including whether the caps on the cost of credit are set at the right level, whether the required content and presentation of the consumer warnings needs to be altered, whether more needs to be done to protect consumers who are particularly disadvantaged or vulnerable and whether a general anti-avoidance provision should be included in the credit legislation.

Guidance regarding the decision to remove an adolescent from athletic competition immediately following an acute concussive injury and the safe return of play in the short term is widely accepted and supported by clinical evidence, local institutional policies, and state and federal laws. There is considerably less guidance regarding the decision to permanently retire an adolescent athlete for medical reasons due to concussive injuries. In this article, we discuss the clinical and non-clinical considerations that should guide clinicians in discussions regarding the adolescent athlete’s permanent retirement by emphasizing the ethical obligation to protect the child’s right to an open future as possibly determinative in otherwise ambiguous cases.

AbstractWe obtain approximation bounds for products of quasimodes for the Laplace–Beltrami operator on compact Riemannian manifolds of all dimensions without boundary. We approximate the products of quasimodes uv by a low-degree vector space {B_{n}}, and we prove that the size of the space {\dim(B_{n})} is small. In this paper, we first study bilinear quasimode estimates of all dimensions {d=2,3}, {d=4,5} and {d\geq 6}, respectively, to make the highest frequency disappear from the right-hand side. Furthermore, the result of the case {\lambda=\mu} of bilinear quasimode estimates improves {L^{4}} quasimodes estimates of Sogge and Zelditch in [C. D. Sogge and S. Zelditch, A note on L^{p}-norms of quasi-modes, Some Topics in Harmonic Analysis and Applications, Adv. Lect. Math. (ALM) 34, International Press, Somerville 2016, 385–397] when {d\geq 8}. And on this basis, we give approximation bounds in {H^{-1}}-norm. We also prove approximation bounds for the products of quasimodes in {L^{2}}-norm using the results of {L^{p}}-estimates for quasimodes in [M. Blair, Y. Sire and C. D. Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effect of active skeletonized sutural distractor (ASSD) appliance on temporomandibular joint morphology of class III malocclusion subjects. Materials and Methods This was a prospective interventional study. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) images of 22 patients were taken before and after treatment by using Planmeca Promax 3D CBCT machine version 2.9.2 (Planmeca OY Helsinki, Finland). The condylar width, height, length, roof of glenoid fossa thickness, and all joint spaces were measured. The condylar position was determined based on Pullinger and Hollander formula. The condylar shape was determined as per Kinzinger et al. The condylar volume was calculated by using Mimics software (Materialize, Belgium). Statistical Analysis Data analysis was performed by using SPSS software version 24. Wilcoxon paired signed-rank test was used to compare the difference in temporomandibular joint morphology and condylar volume between pre- and post-treatment measurements. Chi-square test was used to compare the condylar position and shape. Results The superior (p = 0.000 on the right side, p = 0.005 on the left side) and posterior joint spaces (p = 0.000 on both sides) were decreased after the treatment, respectively. The condyles were rotated upward and backward, thereby increasing the anterior joint spaces (p = 0.000 on both sides) after the treatment. The condylar volume increases after treatment, but no significant differences were observed (p = 0.903 on the right side, p = 0.062 on the left side). Conclusion The significant changes were observed in joint spaces. The condyles were more anteriorly placed before treatment. Condylar position and shape alter in response to ASSD treatment. The condylar volume did not show any significant change.

Short-term (26 weeks) Tg.rasH2 mouse carcinogenicity studies have been conducted as an alternative model to the conventional 2-year mouse carcinogenicity studies, using urethane as a positive control material. In these studies, urethane was used at a dose of 1,000 mg/kg/dose, administered intraperitoneally on days 1, 3, and 5. Urethane consistently produces lung adenomas and carcinomas and hemangiosarcomas of the spleen, proving validity of the assay. We conducted 3 pilot studies at 3 different sites of Charles River Laboratories using a lower dose of urethane (500 mg/kg/dose), administered on days 1, 3, and 5, followed by a 12-week observation period. Our results demonstrate that a lower dose can be used successfully with fewer number of animals per sex to prove the validity of the assay. However, based on our cumulative experience with this model, we propose to eliminate positive control dose groups in future Tg.rasH2 carcinogenicity studies.

Companies usually like to claim that they are market-oriented; however, many studies reveal that businesses typically rely on short-term financial indicators, only a small percentage of firms consider time spent on consumers as important, and marketing is considered as a cost rather than an investment. Companies, however, need to understand their own and their environment's operations in order to set the right objectives, manage their tangible and intangible resources, and achieve the best possible performance. This paper focuses on performance measurement and its relation to market orientation, marketing activity, objectives and marketing resources. This research reveals that though marketing's role in the organisation seems to be significant managers' commitment to marketing often remains at an attitudinal level, and they tend to overestimate their marketing efforts. Furthermore, customer-based measures seem to be good indicators of market-orientation, still managers consider financial and market performance measures to be more important. This paper supports the finding that market orientation and business success are strongly related to one another.

A strain of Penicillium lilacinum, isolated from soil, produced pustulanase, β-(1 → 3)-glucanase, (EC. 3.2.1.6) and cellulase (EC.3.2.1.4) when cultivated on a medium containing pustulan as the sole source of carbon. If pustulan was replaced by ketopustulan, the production of pustulanase was stimulated about 10-fold although the amount of stimulation was dependent on the degree of oxidation of pustulan. β-(1 → 3)-Glucanase production was stimulated slightly by ketopustulan; however, the degree of oxidation did not affect significantly the yield of this enzyme. Cellulase production was either unaffected by the oxidized polymer, or at higher degrees of oxidation, decreased. Tween 80 stimulated the production of the three enzymes in media containing ketopustulan with a low degree of oxidation but was inhibitory to pustulanase and cellulase production in media containing ketopustulan with a high degree of oxidation. A combination of gel filtration and isoelectric focusing revealed that each enzyme activity was attributable to at least two proteins.

Abstract Purpose of Review The hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are a group of disorders characterised by progressive lower limb weakness and spasticity. We address the challenges and controversies involved in the genetic diagnosis of HSP. Recent Findings There is a large and rapidly expanding list of genes implicated in HSP, making it difficult to keep gene testing panels updated. There is also a high degree of phenotypic overlap between HSP and other disorders, leading to problems in choosing the right panel to analyse. We discuss genetic testing strategies for overcoming these diagnostic hurdles, including the use of targeted sequencing gene panels, whole-exome sequencing and whole-genome sequencing. Personalised treatments for HSP are on the horizon, and a genetic diagnosis may hold the key to access these treatments. Summary Developing strategies to overcome the challenges and controversies in HSP may hold the key to a rapid and accurate genetic diagnosis.
