The Hierarchical Subspace Iteration Method for Laplace–Beltrami Eigenproblems

Sparse eigenproblems are important for various applications in computer graphics. The spectrum and eigenfunctions of the Laplace–Beltrami operator, for example, are fundamental for methods in shape analysis and mesh processing. The Subspace Iteration Method is a robust solver for these problems. In practice, however, Lanczos schemes are often faster. In this article, we introduce the Hierarchical Subspace Iteration Method (HSIM) , a novel solver for sparse eigenproblems that operates on a hierarchy of nested vector spaces. The hierarchy is constructed such that on the coarsest space all eigenpairs can be computed with a dense eigensolver. HSIM uses these eigenpairs as initialization and iterates from coarse to fine over the hierarchy. On each level, subspace iterations, initialized with the solution from the previous level, are used to approximate the eigenpairs. This approach substantially reduces the number of iterations needed on the finest grid compared to the non-hierarchical Subspace Iteration Method. Our experiments show that HSIM can solve Laplace–Beltrami eigenproblems on meshes faster than state-of-the-art methods based on Lanczos iterations, preconditioned conjugate gradients, and subspace iterations.

Foliation of an Asymptotically Flat End by Critical Capacitors

We construct a foliation of an asymptotically flat end of a Riemannian manifold by hypersurfaces which are critical points of a natural functional arising in potential theory. These hypersurfaces are perturbations of large coordinate spheres, and they admit solutions of a certain over-determined boundary value problem involving the Laplace–Beltrami operator. In a key step we must invert the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator, highlighting the nonlocal nature of our problem.

Analysis of Gegenbauer kernel filtration on the hypersphere

In this study, we aim to construct explicit forms of convolution formulae for Gegenbauer kernel filtration on the surface of the unit hypersphere. Using the properties of Gegenbauer polynomials, we reformulated Gegenbauer filtration as the limit of a sequence of finite linear combinations of hyperspherical Legendre harmonics and gave proof for the completeness of the associated series. We also proved the existence of a fundamental solution of the spherical Laplace-Beltrami operator on the hypersphere using the filtration kernel. An application of the filtration on a one-dimensional Cauchy wave problem was also demonstrated.

The Classical and Quantum Photon Field for Non-compact Manifolds with Boundary and in Possibly Inhomogeneous Media

In this article I give a rigorous construction of the classical and quantum photon field on non-compact manifolds with boundary and in possibly inhomogeneous media. Such a construction is complicated by zero-modes that appear in the presence of non-trivial topology of the manifold or the boundary. An important special case is $${\mathbb {R}}^3$$ R 3 with obstacles. In this case the zero modes have a direct interpretation in terms of the topology of the obstacle. I give a formula for the renormalised stress energy tensor in terms of an integral kernel of an operator defined by spectral calculus of the Laplace Beltrami operator on differential forms with relative boundary conditions.

Complete Logarithmic Sobolev inequality via Ricci curvature bounded below II

We study the “geometric Ricci curvature lower bound”, introduced previously by Junge, Li and LaRacuente, for a variety of examples including group von Neumann algebras, free orthogonal quantum groups [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]-deformed Gaussian algebras and quantum tori. In particular, we show that Laplace operator on [Formula: see text] admits a factorization through the Laplace–Beltrami operator on the classical orthogonal group, which establishes the first connection between these two operators. Based on a non-negative curvature condition, we obtain the completely bounded version of the modified log-Sobolev inequalities for the corresponding quantum Markov semigroups on the examples mentioned above. We also prove that the “geometric Ricci curvature lower bound” is stable under tensor products and amalgamated free products. As an application, we obtain a sharp Ricci curvature lower bound for word-length semigroups on free group factors.

Color confinement at the boundary of the conformally compactified AdS5

The topology of closed manifolds forces interacting charges to appear in pairs. We take advantage of this property in the setting of the conformal boundary of AdS5 spacetime, topologically equivalent to the closed manifold S1× S3, by considering the coupling of two massless opposite charges on it. Taking the interaction potential as the analog of Coulomb interaction (derived from a fundamental solution of the S3 Laplace-Beltrami operator), a conformal S1× S3 metric deformation is proposed, such that free motion on the deformed metric is equivalent to motion on the round metric in the presence of the interaction potential. We give explicit expressions for the generators of the conformal algebra in the representation induced by the metric deformation.By identifying the charge as the color degree of freedom in QCD, and the two charges system as a quark-anti-quark system, we argue that the associated conformal wave operator equation could provide a realistic quantum mechanical description of the simplest QCD system, the mesons.Finally, we discuss the possibility of employing the compactification radius, R, as an- other scale along ΛQCD, by means of which, upon reparametrizing Q2c2 as (Q2c2+ħ2c2/R2), a perturbative treatment of processes in the infrared could be approached.

Poincaré Inequality for a Mesh-Dependent 2-Norm on Piecewise Linear Surfaces with Boundary

We establish several useful estimates for a non-conforming 2-norm posed on piecewise linear surface triangulations with boundary, with the main result being a Poincaré inequality. We also obtain equivalence of the non-conforming 2-norm posed on the true surface with the norm posed on a piecewise linear approximation. Moreover, we allow for free boundary conditions. The true surface is assumed to be C 2 , 1 C^{2,1} when free conditions are present; otherwise, C 2 C^{2} is sufficient. The framework uses tools from differential geometry and the closest point map (see [G. Dziuk, Finite elements for the Beltrami operator on arbitrary surfaces, Partial Differential Equations and Calculus of Variations, Lecture Notes in Math. 1357, Springer, Berlin (1988), 142–155]) for approximating the full surface Hessian operator. We also present a novel way of applying the closest point map when dealing with surfaces with boundary. Connections with surface finite element methods for fourth-order problems are also noted.

Random Assignment Problems on 2d Manifolds

We consider the assignment problem between two sets of N random points on a smooth, two-dimensional manifold $$\Omega $$ Ω of unit area. It is known that the average cost scales as $$E_{\Omega }(N)\sim {1}/{2\pi }\ln N$$ E Ω ( N ) ∼ 1 / 2 π ln N with a correction that is at most of order $$\sqrt{\ln N\ln \ln N}$$ ln N ln ln N . In this paper, we show that, within the linearization approximation of the field-theoretical formulation of the problem, the first $$\Omega $$ Ω -dependent correction is on the constant term, and can be exactly computed from the spectrum of the Laplace–Beltrami operator on $$\Omega $$ Ω . We perform the explicit calculation of this constant for various families of surfaces, and compare our predictions with extensive numerics.
