Abstract. This study is aimed to create an alternative to the classical GIS representation of the impact of earthquake hazards on urban areas. To accomplish this, the traditional map was revised, so that it can cope with contemporary innovative ways of planning, namely strategic planning. As in the theory of fractals, the building dimension and the urban neighbourhood dimension are addressed as different geographic scales between which lessons for decisions can be learned through regression. The interaction between the two scales is useful when looking for alternatives, for the completion of a GIS analysis, and in choosing the landmarks, which, in the case of hazards, become strategic elements in strategic planning. A methodology to innovate mapping as a digital means for analysing and visualising the impact of hazards is proposed. This method relies on concepts from various geography, urban planning, structural engineering and architecture approaches related to disaster management. The method has been tested at the building scale for the N–S Boulevard in Bucharest, Romania, called Magheru. At the urban scale, an incident database has been created, in which the case study for the building level can be mapped. The paper presented is part of a larger research work, which addresses decision making using the framework shown here. The main value of the paper is in proposing a conceptual framework to deconstruct the map for digital earthquake disaster impact analysis and representation. The originality of the concept consists in the representation of elements at different scales considered to be of different levels of importance in the urban tissue, according to the analysis to be performed on them.

With the fast development of IoT technologies and the potential of real-time data gathering, allowing decision makers to take advantage of real-time visibility on their processes, the rise of Digital Twins (DT) has attracted several research interests. DT are among the highest technological trends for the near future and their evolution is expected to transform the face of several industries and applications and opens the door to a huge number of possibilities. However, DT concept application remains at a cradle stage and it is mainly restricted to the manufacturing sector. In fact, its true potential will be revealed in many other sectors. In this research paper, we aim to propose a DT prototype for instore daily operations management and test its impact on daily operations management performances. More specifically, for this specific research work, we focus the impact analysis of DT in the fitting rooms’ area.

Enriching the limited knowledge and research on linkage between strategic management, human resource and innovation in developing economies, this paper focuses on the role of participative strategic planning (PSP), promotion focus and flexible role orientation (FRO) on innovation capability in Iranian SMEs. Furthermore, the moderating role of ideation strategy will be investigated. A total of 252 samples were collected from Iranian SME managers and employees in the different sectors through a quantitative method. A questionnaire was used for the data collection, and AMOS-SEM was employed for data analysis. The results indicate that PSP has a positive and significant impact on promotion focus, FRO, and innovation capability. In addition, it is shown that ideation strategy moderates the impact of promotion focus and FRO on innovation capabilities. Given the positive impact of PSP on promotion focus, FRO, and innovation capability, it is suggested that SME’s top managers use staff and managers with different levels in strategic planning processes and long-term organisation goals.

The authors should be commended for their pioneering research work on structural cladding and energy-dissipating connections. This discussion has been written to help ensure that this research, which is multidisciplinary in nature, leads to practical applications. All structural engineering researchers must recognize that structural cladding design is one of the broadest building-related research topics that can be tackled. They should not focus only on topics that have roots in structural engineering alone, and thus deny the integral role of structural cladding in building design. The importance of a building systems approach must be recognized. In doing so, the role of the architect will become obvious, and a promising collaborative effort will be established. This discussion is made from the perspective of a background in structural engineering and architectural research and practice.

This article explores the mechanisms of urban self-organization and the role of formal institutions in shaping peri-urban areas. A case study of Gaobeidian, a former rural village that is now part of Beijing, examines the mechanisms of change and the interdependent relations between institutions and bottom-up initiatives that drive peri-urban transformations. The paper presents two main contributions: (1) it identifies the differences between government-controlled planning, shared governance, self-governance and self-organization and how these intertwine in urban transformations; (2) it proposes three distinct roles played by institutions in relation to self-organization: triggering, constraining and enabling. The empirical study of this Chinese case will enrich the current debate on planning for self-organizing cities by revealing the impact of, and the various responses to, self-organization dynamics in a hierarchical institutional environment.

AbstractMany insects are able to precisely control their jumping movements. Previous studies have shown that many falling insects have some degree of control of their landing-orientation, indicating a possible significant biomechanical role of the exoskeleton in air righting mechanisms. Once in the air, the properties of the actual landing site are almost impossible to predict. Falling insects thus have to cope mostly with the situation at impact. What exactly happens at the impact? Do locusts actively ‘prepare for landing’ while falling, or do they just ‘crash’ into the substrate?Detailed impact analyses of free falling Schistocerca gregaria locusts show that most insects typically crashed onto the substrate. There was no notable impact-reducing behaviour (protrusion of legs, etc.). Independent of dropping angle, both warm and cooled locusts mostly fell onto head and thorax first. Our results also show that alive warm locusts fell significantly faster than inactive or dead locusts. This indicates a possible tradeoff between active control vs. reduced speed. Looking at the morphology of the head-thorax connection in locusts, we propose that the anterior margin of the pronotum might function as a ‘toby collar’ structure, reducing the risk of impact damage to the neck joint. Interestingly, at impact alive insects also tended to perform a bending movement of the body.This biomechanical adaptation might reduce the rebound and shorten the time to recover. The adhesive pads also play an important role to reduce the time to recover by anchoring the insect to the substrate.

PurposeIn recent years, and especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the significant role of agriculture, specifically red meat, in household consumption has been increased. On the other hand, the lack of proper policymaking in the production and pricing of red meat and the lack of a comprehensive study on the beef supply chain has led to a reduction in the role of this protein product in the household food basket. Thus, in this research, comprehensive strategic planning considering the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic has been illustrated to overcome the aforementioned problems.Design/methodology/approachTo study the intended objectives, first, using qualitative methods, the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) to the studied company's supply chain in Iran were identified and then using the SWOT-Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) technique, the surrounding strategies have been analysed.FindingsThe results indicate that the most important strength of the studied company is the “access to the red meat market of the retirement plan”; the most important weakness is the “lack of required and on-time funding, especially in the condition of the COVID-19 pandemic”; the highest-ranked opportunity is the “access to banking facilities” and the main threat to the company is the “COVID-19 pandemic limitations and health protocols”. In the same vein, by examining the attractiveness score of internal and external factors, it was observed that diversity and competitive strategies would have a higher priority. Finally, the QSPM illustrated that activating the full capacity of existing infrastructure has the highest priority.Originality/valueAccording to the red meat supply chain and the link amongst different market levels, identifying, analysing and improving the beef supply chain is of particular importance. One of the threats facing the international community is the emergence of events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which requires businesses to choose the right strategy to deal with the issue. Therefore, the main distinction of this study is to identify, analyse and improve the red meat supply chain of a real case due to the condition of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract. The urban forcing on thermo-dynamical conditions can largely influences local evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer. Urban heat storage can produce noteworthy mesoscale perturbations of the lower atmosphere. The new generations of high-resolution numerical weather prediction models (NWP) is nowadays largely applied also to urban areas. It is therefore critical to reproduce correctly the urban forcing which turns in variations of wind, temperature and water vapor content of the planetary boundary layer (PBL). WRF-ARW, a new model generation, has been used to reproduce the circulation in the urban area of Rome. A sensitivity study is performed using different PBL and surface schemes. The significant role of the surface forcing in the PBL evolution has been verified by comparing model results with observations coming from many instruments (LiDAR, SODAR, sonic anemometer and surface stations). The crucial role of a correct urban representation has been demonstrated by testing the impact of different urban canopy models (UCM) on the forecast. Only one of three meteorological events studied will be presented, chosen as statistically relevant for the area of interest. The WRF-ARW model shows a tendency to overestimate vertical transmission of horizontal momentum from upper levels to low atmosphere, that is partially corrected by local PBL scheme coupled with an advanced UCM. Depending on background meteorological scenario, WRF-ARW shows an opposite behavior in correctly representing canopy layer and upper levels when local and non local PBL are compared. Moreover a tendency of the model in largely underestimating vertical motions has been verified.

In the text I deal with the period of establishment and the beginnings of the work of the Institute of Musicology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences, which is marked by the role of composer and music writer Petar Konjovic (1883- 1970), who founded and was the first director of the Institute (1947-1954). I examined and problematized Konjovic?s efforts to establish and manage the institution, which were inseparable from his role of Fellow of the Academy and Secretary of the Department of Fine Arts and Music of the Serbian Academy of Sciences (1948-1954), through the analysis of archival documentation. The basic assumption that I started from was related to the interdependence between (1) the establishment of an institutional order and (2) the disciplining of scientific research in the direction of the emergence of musicology and ethnomusicology in the local context. In particular, issues related to the Institute?s relationship with the wider organizational environment and research policy of the SAN, as well as the role and support of its significant individuals in the process of the institutionalization of music science were especially highlighted. The problem of acquiring legitimacy in clearly hierarchical relationships proved to be very complex, since the Institute represented, on the one hand, a scientific unit of the Academy of Arts, that is, the Department of Fine Arts and Music, which, on the other hand, was marked by the inheritance of marginalized status of artists in comparison to other entities within the SAN. The formation of scientific tasks and objectives and the questions related to their realization were shaped in such a context. I analyzed these problems within three subchapters. The first of them provides basic information on the reorganization of the Serbian Academy of Sciences within the framework of the cultural policy of the new regime and deals with the aspects of the formal establishment of the Institute (1947) and the contextualization of the first programmatic projections of its work. The second question relates to the diverse problems that accompanied the delay of the start of the Institute?s activities, while the final subchapteris dedicated to the period from hiring the first associates to the end of Konjovic?s directorship (1948-1954). Konjovic?s strategies pointed to his simultaneous stability and flexibility in the design of thematic areas and methodological approaches. The policy of the scientific-research work of the Institute of Musicology from Konjovic?s time can be outlined in several general aspects: reliance on pre-war experiences, without the destruction of inherited value canons, but with constant changes in the direction of widening the scope of processed material through research of hitherto neglected creative personalities, performing practices and institutions; melographed and studied folklore material from various rural and urban areas, including different national and ethnic communities; the establishment of completely new thematic areas in the local context that destabilize the concept of purely national science; the emphasis on interdisciplinarity and openness to communication and exchange of scientific and methodological experiences in the international context. Konjovic?s position at the Serbian Academy of Sciences, his experience in managing various institutions, persistence and strategically planned actions, his high criteria and consideration in the selection of associates, managing without ideological divergences from his position of the bourgeois pre-war intellectual, but also his patient waiting for certain decisions of the competent instances, were crucial for the constitution and survival of the Institute of Musicology, within which the platform of musicological and ethnomusicological disciplines in Serbia was established in just a few years.
