Abstract. A fish-based multimetric index was applied to assess the ecological status of fish fauna in both natural and newly restored seagrass meadows in the Venice lagoon (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy), using natural habitats as reference sites. Fish assemblages were then compared, and community attributes of recreated and natural habitats were evaluated. Ecological status resulted higher in natural meadows, and a multivariate analysis showed that an increase in the relative proportion of seagrass specialists at restored sites could represent an indicator of success of seagrass restoration.

Fish assemblages associated with shallow (4–7 m deep) artificial rocky habitats (i.e. breakwaters) have been assessed between July 2002 and September 2003, at the marine protected area of Miramare and adjacent areas outside the reserve (northern Adriatic sea). Our purpose was to: (1) detect possible differences between ‘protected vs fished’ breakwaters; and (2) compare two visual-census techniques for fish assessment (i.e. strip transects vs stationary points). The fish assemblages observed between protected and fished breakwaters during all four sampling periods were statistically different. More fish taxa were found at the protected than fished breakwaters, while there was no difference in total fish density. Most fish species targeted by fisheries had a greater density (e.g. Sciaena umbra, Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus aurata, Diplodus vulgaris, Diplodus sargus and Diplodus puntazzo) and/or size (e.g. S. aurata and D. annularis) at the protected than fished breakwaters. There was a significant difference in fish assemblages due to assessment method. In general, the number of taxa was greater when assessed by strip transects than stationary points. Total fish density was almost unaffected by the method used, while total density of demersal fish (i.e. excluding schooling species) tended to be greater when evaluated by strip transects, although the difference was statistically significant only in one sampling period out of four. These results indicate that protection from fishing may have the potential to influence fish assemblages associated with breakwaters. Additionally, caution should be used when comparing fish assemblage data collected by different visual assessment techniques.

Habitat loss is a serious issue threatening biodiversity across the planet, including coastal habitats that support important fish populations. Many coastal areas have been extensively modified by the construction of infrastructure such as ports, seawalls, docks, and armored shorelines. In addition, habitat restoration and enhancement projects often include constructed breakwaters or reefs. Such infrastructure may have incidental or intended habitat values for fish, yet their physical complexity makes quantitatively sampling these habitats with traditional gears challenging. We used a fleet of unbaited underwater video cameras to quantify fish communities across a variety of constructed and natural habitats in Perdido and Pensacola Bays in the central northern Gulf of Mexico. Between 2019 and 2021, we collected almost 350 replicate 10 min point census videos from rock jetty, seawall, commercial, public, and private docks, artificial reef, restored oyster reef, seagrass, and shallow sandy habitats. We extracted standard metrics of Frequency of Occurrence and MaxN, as well as more recently developed MeanCount for each taxon observed. Using a simple method to measure the visibility range at each sampling site, we calculated the area of the field of view to convert MeanCount to density estimates. Our data revealed abundant fish assemblages on constructed habitats, dominated by important fisheries species, including grey snapper Lutjanus griseus and sheepshead Archosargus probatocephalus. Our analyses suggest that density estimates may be obtained for larger fisheries species under suitable conditions. Although video is limited in more turbid estuarine areas, where conditions allow, it offers a tool to quantify fish communities in structurally complex habitats inaccessible to other quantitative gears.

In 2009, the first Italian offshore LNG terminal, located approximately 12 km from the coast of Italy in the Northern Adriatic Sea, started its operation phase. Even if the active chlorine concentration in the discharged seawater is within limits set by Italian regulations (0.2 mg/L), to verify the environmental impact of disinfection by-products (DBPs) on the ecosystem, a specific monitoring program was scheduled from 2010 to 2015. The present study is the first displaying results of DBPs in marine waters of the Adriatic Sea. During the first two years of monitoring activities, DBPs were slightly above limit of quantifications (LOQs) in all investigated matrices and limited to the nearest area around the terminal. In these surveys, bromoform was the most frequently detected compound in seawaters, while haloacetic acid presence, as well as transplanted mussels and fish fauna, mostly characterized sediments. In the following surveys, levels were mostly negligible in all matrices investigated, with values mostly below the specific LOQs of the different compounds.

Natural habitats can be described using an array of variables, but metrics that distil these multiple parameters into a single readily comparable value (e.g. a score) can prove useful for spatio-temporal comparisons as well as decisions concerning environmental resource management. In the lagoon of south-western New Caledonia, multiple habitat variables sampled from seagrass meadows were integrated into a single score for comparison of habitat structure across two spatial scales. Collectively, seagrass meadows scored at 69/100, indicating a ‘fair-to-good’ habitat structure. Spatial variation was evident, however, being greatest at the scale of ‘site’ (0.5–5 km) relative to ‘location’ (tens of kilometres). Key metrics of seagrass area, percentage cover and species identity appeared to drive spatial patterns in habitat structure scores. Although the causes of observed site-scale variation in seagrass structure are untested, differences in wave exposure among sites appear a likely contributing factor. Overall, integrated sampling techniques such as that used herein can provide a convenient way to rapidly compare seagrass habitats, and could be useful as early warning indicators of habitat change in regions where anthropogenic impacts that cause seagrass decline (e.g. eutrophication, sediment released from mining) are of concern.

Ecosystem-service valuation is a useful tool for assessing potential costs of a development, from potential habitat-rehabilitation costs or habitat-value losses. Such an assessment can help avoid or mitigate cost implications from such losses. Furthermore, most environmental-impact assessments focus solely on ecological services, without considering the socio-ecological-economic relationships that provide a more holistic assessment of a habitat by incorporating socio-economic values. This study combines the benefit-transfer approach with significant anthropological and local-knowledge inputs to determine a more complete assessment of the value of seagrass meadows in Mukim Tanjung Kupang, Johor, Malaysia. We collected data that are site-specific and relevant to a small-scale artisanal fishery in this area, which include often-excluded measures such as reported catch landings, gleaning, tourism and downstream economic values. This study determined a seagrass habitat value of US$57731.80 (RM242473.58) ha–1 year–1. However, this figure is highly underestimated owing to the number of unavailable ecosystem-service values, as well as an uncertain future for the area. The research has shown that there are many more components to economic assessments of natural habitats than has previously been realised.

The goals of conservation and sustainable use of environmental ecosystems have increased the need for detailed knowledge of ecological evolution and responses to both anthropogenic pressures and recovery measures. The present study shows the effects of natural processes and planned intervention in terms of reducing nutrient inputs in a highly exploited coastal lagoon, describing its evolution over a 16-year period from the late 1980s (when eutrophication was at its peak) until 2003. Changes in nutrient and carbon concentrations in the top layer of sediments were investigated in parallel with macroalgal and seagrass biomass in the most anthropized basin of Venice Lagoon in four surveys conducted in accordance with the same protocols in 1987, 1993, 1998, and 2003. A pronounced reduction in trophic state (mainly total nitrogen, organic phosphorus, and organic carbon concentrations) and macroalgal biomass was recorded, together with the progressive expansion of seagrass meadows. General considerations are also made on the effects of Manila clam farming and the shift from illegal to managed clam farming.
