Throughout the world, one-third of the urban population continues to dwell in unplanned neighborhoods mostly located within unhygienic slums. The impact on their health could be far-reaching. The present study, which was cross-sectional, examined the perception of people in urban slums of Bouaké, Cote d’Ivoire vis-à-vis the attendant health risks. Majority of respondents selected for the study had lived within the study area for at least 2 years. Two persons per household were selected for the study; including the head of the household and any other occupant within the ages of 8 and 15 years. Overall, 423 people were interviewed. The median age was 21 years, with an average residency of 14 years. A total of 98.8% of the respondents agreed strongly that living in slums exposed inhabitants to grave health risks. However, only 2.9% agreed that an unsanitary environment contributed to pollution of ambient air. The perception of health risks related to exposure to unsanitary slums was statistically associated with the age (p = 0.0152) and the number of years of residency (p = 0.0156). Although, the survey suggested that living in urban slums exposed inhabitants to health risks especially disease epidemics, the fact that these residences had subsisted for very long periods within these slums changed their perception about acceptability.

Abstract Writing about Zophopetes cerymica (which they considered more common) and P. laufella combined, Mariau and Morin (1974) state that attacks can be on palms of all ages, including young palms recently planted out. At this age, defoliation of the plants delays their subsequent development. Outbreaks on older trees are rarer, and the damage often less important; these attacks are generally localized at the edge of plantations. Mariau et al. (1981) add that the highest fronds are the most often damaged. Herder et al. (1994) refer to regular outbreaks of P. laufella on oil palm in southern Côte d'Ivoire. There are no more substantive reports on the impact of the feeding damage by these hesperiids.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the type of care that can be achieved and the epidemiological profile of patients attending the 3 public dental practices in the Haut-Sassandra region, in Côte d’Ivoire. The data collection concerned socio-demographic characteristics, reason for consultation, oral hygiene, dental condition, malocclusions and the availability of equipment for the performance of procedures. The 400 patients observed (51.5% male) were aged 16.0 to 86.0 years (mean=35.5 years; SD=13.1 years). The main reasons for consultation were pain (91.5%) and aesthetics (23.5%). Oral hygiene was insufficient for 36.8% of subjects. Oral conditions were malocclusions (12.8%), caries (98.7%) and edentulous (65.7%) with only 11.8% with prosthesis. The average DMFT index was 9.3. Only extractions and resin attached prostheses were possible in all 3 health facilities. Preventive dentistry (sealent, fluoridation), dentofacial orthopedics and implantology were not available in any dental practice. The most frequently performed acts were extractions (74.5%). The results of this study highlight the need for oral health planning with service equipment and awareness among populations who shouldn’t wait until they are in pain to consult.
