This paper reports on an investigation into the potential to widen participation to Higher Education provided by a flexible learning MEng Engineering. The MEng is part of an integrated programme that provides progression routes from a traditional day release Apprenticeship, through HNC, FdEng at a Further Education College to a flexible learning BEng/MEng at a Higher Education Institution. The programme was originally developed to answer a demand from local industry to upskill the engineering workforce, however, the nature of the provision means that it meets much of the best practice for widening participation. The investigation concludes that while the programme provides an opportunity for mature learners to undertake higher education, it largely provides an alternative pathway through vocational education to higher education qualifications for a white male middle class cohort. It also highlights that entry to apprenticeships that lead to progression opportunities is controlled not by educational institutions but by industry.

The convergence of advances in Electronics, Informatic and Communications transmuted into Telematic and the creation of Internet, which has interconnected the world and all social environments. Education, truly a social process, has been impacted by the arrival of the Internet since the 90s, modifying not only the type of resources used in the didactic process of facilitation and acquisition of knowledge involving their two main protagonists: teachers and students, respectively; but also the culture of the educational institutions, which, in the Venezuelan case, by law, must incorporate in their mission and organizational developing plans, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). After two decades of establishing the use of Internet as a priority in educational institutions, mostly in Venezuelan universities, in the present article two higher education institutions are analyzed using the Popperian vision (Popper, 1986): one private and one public; to determine if the didactic usage of ICT responds to an expectation or to an aspiration, and as such, if it is personal or institutional. A dissatisfaction of the legal expectation was evidenced, which turned in an institutional aspiration, due to the existence of a negative and general predisposition of teachers and students towards the use of ICT as resources for the mediation of didactic processes in today’s society, which highlights the important role of the personal affective component; in this case, digital affectivity (Goncalves, 2015) for the accomplishment of goals that a higher education institution has established. Keywords: ICT, Didactic Usage, Higher Education, Digital Affectivity.

Behavioural economics have become hot topic in research and debate in last few decades. In the context of behavioural economics, it is possible to summarize resemblances and create a system based on predication and regularities of errors, by analysing consumer’s behaviour, which allows to solve issues of future process development. In paper “Applying behavioural economics in education: study of undergraduate practices of selecting educational institutions” the authors identify key factors which influence undergraduates to choose higher education institution. The purpose of this paper is therefore to identify key elements of the behavioural economics that can be used to influence undergraduate selection development in favour of higher education institution. Additionally, within the framework of the study are applied insights of behaviour economics, which help guidance general understanding of undergraduate decision making. Particularly focusing on heuristics, that undergraduates are using to ease the complexity of decision making, which can lead to systematic errors and bias. This study per se synopsizes the definite findings of developing behavioural economics, which allows to apply this knowledge to study undergraduate choice in selecting higher educational institution. In this study were used numerous methods, including literature review, interviews with representatives of higher education and behavioural economics experts and surveying undergraduates.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report research carried out by the Mixed Economy Group of colleges into the student experience of part time (PT) higher education (HE) delivered in English further education (FE) colleges. Design/methodology/approach – An online survey was completed by 352 PT students. Their responses, including free comments, formed the basis of the report. The authors provide a context for the work by referring to research carried out by other national agencies. Findings – The research illustrates the strengths of college-based HE, which largely derives from delivery by staff who are qualified teachers and, often, professionally active in their field of expertise. Whilst valuing this, students also seek recognition of the demands of work and family on their study time, as well as an identity as HE students within the greater FE environment. Social implications – PT HE can drive regional economic growth. By addressing the issues raised by students in the research, local colleges, partner universities, employers and national government can re-build local skill bases. Promoting PT HE develops a vocational ladder to HE, thus widening participation. Originality/value – Relatively little publically available research exists into the experiences of students pursuing PT HE in colleges. This primary research begins an evidence-based debate about how colleges can improve their offer but also reminds Government of the need to give equal weight to the needs of PT students in future changes to the delivery of HE.

Sexual violence was prevalent in many settings, including in religious educational institutions. This article analyzed cases of sexual violence at an Islamic higher education institution in West Java, Indonesia, using the maqasid al-shariah and Foucault's theory of sexuality as the theoretical frameworks. This mixed-method research used Google form's surveys, in-depth interviews, and observations as the data collection methods. The data were analyzed using a flow model, which comprised selection, display, analysis or discussion, and conclusion. This study showed that verbal and non-verbal sexual violence was rampant. It occurred between student and student, lecturer and staff, staff and staff, and lecturer and student. Four models of sexual violence were found based on the typology designed by Dzeich and Weiner, who categorized thirteen forms of sexual violence. The maqasid al-shariah analysis outlined that sexual violence was against the fundamental values and objectives of sharia and human rights. Additionally, Foucault's theory identified patriarchal and cultural hegemony aspects in sexual violence. This study's intriguing part was the findings that combined in-depth interviews, observations, and surveys, intended to understand the intensity of existing cases. On the other hand, the power of analysis was centered on normative fiqh and sociological aspects. According to the literature reviews, these two approaches had not been administered by previous researchers.

AbstractIn a higher education institution, perceptions and values are split due to the emergence of subcultures, and market orientation is split into competitive, customer (student) and interfunctional orientation. This study seeks to shed light on the concept of market orientation in this context through a comparison of perceptions and values of market orientation in subcultures in a higher education institution in Hungary and consider avenues for potential best practice. Through a mixed method approach, subcultures are identified and are found to exhibit a combination of overlapping and disparate market-oriented values and perceptions. Market orientation is found to be a continuum and affected by an array of latent variables, such as level of support (institutional and collegial), attitudes to performance appraisal and extent of external focus. Management must tailor the initial message of a market orientation strategy to the shared values at the organizational level, and then adjust the message and incentives to each subculture. In this way, management can create an atmosphere of cohesion, whilst addressing diversity in subcultures.

Coaching in higher education is a relatively new field; although, it has been taking place in educational institutions for some time, even if it was not labeled as such. This paper describes the faculty development filosophies of a US-based higher education institution with a strong culture of supporting faculty and promoting social change. A coaching model was implemented as a means for professional development. It was designed to be facilitated through a peer relationship and it offers problem-focused, contextualized opportunities for faculty to collaborate, thus making the experience and outcome more meaningful. The coaching model is individualized, confidential, non-evaluative, and incorporates three pathways to support the professional development needs of faculty: self-assigned, a request from college leadership as a means to support faculty in an identified area of need, or the New Faculty Orientation (NFO) instructor may recommend a faculty member for coaching as a way to further engage in topics not discussed in-depth in NFO.
