Today the retail business environment becomes more complex and unpredictable in nature. In this research article researchers try to discus on engagement of arts in creating values in retail sector organisations. As the art based methods are used in various organisational developments, so this paper focused on four processes proposed by Darso and Dawids (2002) in retail sector organisation, to identify how these methods innovatively works on retail customers and why these process are important for the retail organisation performance. We identifies that the retailers should have to focus on the use of arts based method such as decoration, entertainment, developing the high skilled employees and attractive retail environment, enables customer to see the retail store environment more differently which helps in improving the performance of retail sector organisations. Based on the review of earlier published literatures, the present study shows that the uses of arts in creating shopping values more innovative, effectively and efficiently in retail sector organisations, have become a key to develop the effective business strategy to get competitive advantages over others.

Department of Business Administration has a business laboratory (Business Lab) that is based on the retail business concept. Until now, the profit per year earned by the Business Lab is still below the average of other retail store business in the same industry. The condition is suspected by less attention to stores environmental factors that have an impact on customer satisfaction. Competition among retail companies increasingly stringent push the owner to be more creative and innovative in creating marketing strategies. The retail business environment is one of the most important variables to be considered for the survival of a retail store. By knowing the dominant factors in the retail store environment variable, store management can make more appropriate marketing strategies to attract customers and increase customers satisfaction. This study aims to assess the environmental factors stores in Business Lab. The data collection is done by distributing 161 questionnaires to consumers of Business Lab. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The result indicates there are three factors in the store's environment factors that need redefinition. First, the second factor was suggested to be renamed to promotions and convenience shopping after getting two new variables, namely direction and facilities. Secondly, the fourth factor is suggested to adjust its name to 'availability' as it contains two components, location and time of operation in the same factor. Third, the 'atmosphere of the shop' is divided into two different factors, namely 'convenience shopping' and 'storefront'.

Growing in the competitive environment, organizations need to find ways to improve their performance even better by ensuring that all key drivers are being developed and utilized effectively. Thai and Vietnamese food industries are rapidly growing sectors. This study investigates the relationships between supply chain capabilities and competitive advantages towards business performance, and compares the above mentioned relationships between Thai and Vietnamese food industries. The data were gathered from conducted surveys with the food manufacturing companies in both countries, and tested by Structural Equation Modeling. The empirical results show that supply chain capabilities play an important role in business improvement in both countries. While, supply chain integration is considered as a critical factor for the Vietnamese food industry, human resource management is much regarded as important for the Thai food industry. These findings help companies in each country decide the best strategy for differentiating themselves in their business environment.

Learning outcomes The learning outcomes are as follows: decision-making in the areas of business plan, business strategy, financial management, profit planning and marketing, learning from outer business environment, succession planning for first-generation entrepreneur and choosing appropriate source of financing and drivers for diversification. Case overview/synopsis Immersed in sipping green tea in his capacious office lounge, the octogenarian Arjun Mehta introspected on the trials and tribulations of his journey as an entrepreneur, the voyage which started four decades ago. From 1976 to 2018, the business has now traversed three generations. Starting with Spice Mart (Sole Proprietor) to Hindware and Lament Construction (partnership firms) to Starlite Homes Pvt. Ltd. (corporate entity), Mr Mehta witnessed transformation and restructuring in organization with every new generation which characterized the evolution of family business. Handholding children to take up the reins of Spice Mart was not a calculated choice. Yet it is remarkable to study the growth in organizational structure of the regional family business. As a self-made entrepreneur, morals, ethics and value system are vital ingredients steering the organic growth story. Third-generation Mehta’s are enterprising, aspiring and visionary. With the incorporation of a corporate entity, they convinced themselves to bring inorganic growth in their business. Arjun Mehta gleamed with pride as Spice Mart partakes an organized structure which had lost prominence with the second-generation entrepreneurs. But he is equally hammered with juxtaposed thoughts. He contemplates whether the integration of retail business with real estate corroborates sustainable innovation. Will independent businesses create the brand’s footprints perpetually? Should the millennial confine business natively or should they grow internationally and become a conglomerate? Scholars have intensely researched competitive Intelligence or CI for decades. This topic has been under constant investigation and development concerning business strategy in soaring business performance. This paper critically examines and integrates the Competitive Intelligence Practices by different industries and its relationship on organizational performances.  The review employed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and utilizes three databases (Science Direct, Scopus, and Proquest) from January 2014 to November 2019. This timeframe and databases were preferred because the articles collected have been through a quality control process and comprehensive source for research performance data and analytics. As many as 666 articles were narrowed down to 20 articles to meet the criteria of this study.  Conclusively, six main themes were identified, which are Organizational awareness, CI process, Social capital, CI Challenges, Competitive advantages and Sustainability based on the thematic analyses. Furthermore, another five sub-themes emerge from these key themes. A deduction is made concerning a relationship between Competitive Intelligence Practices and Organizational performance. This paper also suggests conducting more studies in service industries, especially the hospitality industry because of its economic impact and the changing landscape in today's consumer.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to investigate the conditions under which small independent retailers can improve their business performance by adopting a merchandising information orientation and strategically integrating into retailer buying groups.Design/methodology/approachThis study tests hypotheses using a hierarchical multiple regression model and data obtained from 241 supermarket retailers that are existing members of buying groups in Japan.FindingsThe results indicate that merchandising information orientation alone may not be a beneficial strategy for small independent retailers to improve their business performance; however, by combining a merchandising information strategy with strong strategic integration with a buying group, optimal benefits can be achieved.Practical implicationsThe findings highlight the potential benefits small independent retailers can gain from buying groups when pursuing a merchandising information orientation, which may prompt such retailers to actively integrate the policies and activities of the buying group into their business strategy.Originality/valueThe authors conceptualise retailers’ merchandising information in a model that demonstrates the link between a firm’s information strategy and its performance from the perspective of resource-based theory. Thus, this study advances the knowledge of the strategic behaviours of small independent retailers and provides valuable information for buying groups in the retail sector.

Malaysia, like many developing countries, is encouraging local businesses to take greater role in the management of its economy. While incentives and deregulation measures are offered, variations in performances still persist. Researchers have long been interested in explaining the variance in firm performance, as even those firms operating in the same industry and in the same business environment show differences in performance outcomes. Numerous paradigms in the literature have been employed to explain the variance in business performance, including the Classical Industry Organisation, the Revisionist school, the New Industrial Organisation school, the PIMS paradigm, the Austrian school, and the Resource-based school. This paper investigates the combined effects of managerial characteristics of owners/managers and business strategy on the firm performance of Chinese small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Using multivariate relationship, the results of the study did not show any significant correlation between the managerial characteristics of the owners/managers and firm performance outcomes among the Chinese entrepreneurs. Nevertheless, a significant amount of variance in performance outcomes can be explained by firm strategy. Furthermore, several significant correlations were found between managerial characteristics and business strategy.
