Comparison of visual acuity and ocular symptoms among computer users and non-users in young adults in Lucknow

Abstract Objective: To analyze the clinical features, treatment, and prognosis of endophthalmitis caused by a liver abscess.Methods: All cases of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by a liver abscess in our hospital in the past 7 years were analyzed retrospectively. The data collected included age, sex, history of diabetes, initial and final vision, pathogen, course of the disease, treatment, and prognosis.Results: 21 eyes of 19 patients were complicated with liver abscess. The average age was 55.9 ±9.8 years old, including 10 males (52.6%) and 9 females (44.4%), 13 patients complicated with diabetes (71.4%), 14 patients (66.7%) first went to the ophthalmology department for diagnosis and treatment and 5 with hepatobiliary surgery (33.3%). 14 patients had a fever before onset, with an average fever time of 5.8 days. Before treatment, the duration of ocular symptoms was 7.71 ±6.68 days, 5.71 ±1.25 days for patients who go to ophthalmology for diagnosis and treatment for the first time, and 12.2 ±3.58 days for patients who go to other departments. After treatment, the average visual acuity of 21 eyes was 0.013, and the average best-corrected visual acuity was 0.79. In the 21 eyes, vitreous fluid culture was positive in 7 eyes (33.3%), all of which were Klebsiella pneumonia. Among the 14 patients with fever during hospitalization, 5 cases were positive for blood microbial culture, all of which were Klebsiella pneumonia. After vitrectomy, the average visual acuity was improved by 4.90 ±2.47 letters and that of patients without vitrectomy was-0.25±0.16letters. The visual acuity of patients who underwent postoperative visual was significantly better than that of patients without postoperative visual (P<0.096). The visual acuity of patients without vitrectomy was significantly higher than that of patients without vitrectomy (P <0.01). 3 eyes (33.3%) of 9 eyes in the IVI group were removed because of uncontrolled inflammation, and 1 eye of 12 eyes in the PPV group was removed because of inflammation recurrence.Conclusion: The prognosis of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by liver abscess is generally poor, but early treatment can save part of the vision. The first visit non-ophthalmology department will delay the early diagnosis of the disease. Diabetes is an important risk factor for endogenous endophthalmitis and poor vision in patients with liver abscess. Klebsiella pneumonia is the main pathogen of intraocular infection. Vitrectomy combined with vitreous injection of antibiotics can improve the prognosis. A systematic and thorough treatment of a liver abscess is of great significance to prevent the recurrence of endophthalmitis in a liver abscess.

Abstract Background Currently, the population with myopia climbs steadily, and is developing toward younger age, posing a great concern to the health of adolescents. Myopia in severe cases can cause irreversible consequences such as glaucoma, blindness, and other complications. At present, the solutions for myopia are glasses, medication, and surgery. This study aims to investigate the role of a physiotherapy category based on guided meditation for vision acuity training on adolescent myopia. Methods This is a prospective, randomized, multicenter clinical trial. One thousand one hundred forty primary and secondary school students aged 8–18 years old from 27 schools will be recruited and randomly divided into an experimental and a control group at a ratio of 2:1 in two phases, with a training period of 30 days in each phase and a follow-up period of 3 months. No interventions will be conducted during the follow-up period, nor will other interventions employed. Inclusion criteria will meet the diagnostic criteria for simple myopia and −6.00D ≤ spherical lenses ≤ −0.50D and cylindrical lenses ≤1.50D. The primary observation index will be to compare the statistical differences in distant visual acuity between the two groups; the secondary observation indexes will be ocular symptoms (mainly including eye fatigue, dryness, pain, double vision, neck pain, thought disorders, and lags in response), diopter, and astigmatism. Discussion The purpose of this two-phase trial is to compare the clinical effectiveness of focused vision-guided meditation with Chinese eye exercises that are also non-pharmacological, non-invasive interventions for myopia, and to maximize the benefit to the subjects. The results will indicate whether the training based on focused vision-guided meditation has the ability to improve distant visual acuity, relieve ocular symptoms, and ameliorate diopter. In addition, this trial will provide clinical efficacy of the training, which is expected to provide meaningful data for vision rehabilitation. At the same time, the vision acuity training method, which is permeated with the concept of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) rehabilitation and health maintenance, will be applied to achieve the goal of preventing or alleviating myopic development and reducing myopia rate. Introduction - Myopia is the most common Refractive error of the eye seen in children and young adults and it has become more prevalent in recent years and is a cause of concern the world over. Myopia commonly referred to as near or shortsightedness. Some of the clinical features of Vataja Timira can be correlated with Myopia. Timira is counted under the Drishtigata Rogas [1] described by Sushruta. Timira involving first and second patala in terms of symptoms, anatomical structures involved and the pathogenesis of the disease. Timira begins with the blurring of vision gradually leading to the deterioration of eyesight. Shastrokta lakshanas of Vatika Timira such as bhramantiva sa pashyati, aavil darshan, vyaavidha darshan, aruna darshan [2]. Materials and Methods - A 20-year-old male, came to Shalakya Tantra OPD in National Institute of Ayurveda, deemed to be University Jaipur (R.J.), with chief complaints of defective vision for distance in both eyes, pain in both eyes and watering from both eyes since 4 months. He was treated with Nasya, Netra Pariseka, one sitting of Tarpana, Triphala guggulu, Patoladi eyedrops and Netramritam eyedrops. Result - At the end of the study, improvement in the visual acuity in both eyes, improvement in pain in both eyes and watering from both eyes have reduced. Conclusion -Thus, it can be concluded that Ayurvedic treatments are helpful to control Myopia. Keywords: Myopia, Nasya, Tarpana, Netra pariseka, Timira, Triphala Guggulu.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Few studies have suggested a relationship between vestibular system and sleep deprivation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of acute sleep deprivation lasting 24 hours or more on the postural balance and the visual abilities related to the vestibular system in healthy young adults. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy young adults (8 males, 23 female; ages 18– 36 years) who had experienced at least 24 hours of sleep deprivation were included in the study. Subjects made two visits to the test laboratory. One visit was scheduled during a sleep deprivation (SD) condition, and the other was scheduled during a daily life (DL) condition. Five tests— the Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Static Visual Acuity Test (SVA), Minimum Perception Time Test (mPT), Dynamic Visual Acuity Test (DVA), and Gaze Stabilization Test (GST)— were performed using a Computerized Dynamic Posturography System. RESULTS: A statistically significant difference was found between SD and DL measurements in somatosensorial (p = 0.003), visual (p = 0.037), vestibular (p = 0.008) ratios, and composite scores (p = 0.001) in SOT. The mPT results showed a statistically significant difference between SD and DL conditions (p = 0.001). No significant difference was found between SD and DL conditions in the comparison of the mean SVA (p = 0.466), DVA (p = 0.192), and GST head velocity values (p = 0.160). CONCLUSIONS: Sleep deprivation has a considerable impact on the vestibular system and visual perception time in young adults. Increased risk of accidents and performance loss after SD were thought to be due to the postural control and visual processing parameters rather than dynamic visual parameters of the vestibular system.

Background/AimTo study the association between exposure to biomass smoke from cooking fuels andi cataract, visual acuity and ocular symptoms in women.MethodsWe conducted a community-based cross-sectional study among women (≥20 years and without a previous diagnosis of cataract, ocular trauma or diabetes or those taking steroids) from hilly and plain regions of Nepal. Eligible participants received an interview and a comprehensive eye assessment (cataract development, visual acuity test and ocular symptoms). Participants’ data on demographics, cooking fuel type and duration of use, and cooking habits were collected. We addressed potential confounders using the propensity score and other risk factors for ocular diseases through regression analysis.ResultsOf 784 participants, 30.6% used clean fuel (liquefied petroleum gas, methane, electricity) as their primary current fuel, and the remaining 69.4% used biomass fuels. Thirty-nine per cent of the total participants had cataracts—about twofold higher in those who currently used biomass fuel compared with those who used clean fuel (OR=2.27; 95% CI 1.09 to 4.77) and over threefold higher in those who always used biomass. Similarly, the nuclear cataract was twofold higher in the current biomass user group compared with the clean fuel user group (OR=2.53; 95% CI 1.18–5.42) and over threefold higher among those who always used biomass. A higher proportion of women using biomass had impaired vision, reported more ocular symptoms compared with those using clean fuel. Severe impaired vision and blindness were only present in biomass fuel users. However, the differences were only statistically significant for symptoms such as redness, burning sensation, a complaint of pain in the eye and tear in the eyes.ConclusionsCataract was more prevalent in women using biomass for cooking compared with those using clean fuel.

AIM: To identify the clinical features and treatment outcomes of endogenous Klebsiella pneumoniae endophthalmitis and investigate prognostic factors of poor visual outcome. METHODS: The clinical records of all patients diagnosed with endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis between January 2007 to December 2018 in Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong, China were retrospectively reviewed. Thorough ophthalmological examination findings were recorded in the case note, including visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examination, indirect ophthalmoscopy and B-scan ultrasonography if media opacity precluded fundus viewing. RESULTS: A total of 18 eyes in 14 patients were identified. Bilateral involvement was noted in 4 patients (28.6%). Hepatobiliary sepsis was the source in 9 patients (64.3%). Culture of intraocular fluid was positive in 5 out of 18 eyes (27.8%). Mortality was noted in 2 patients (14.3%). Mean final visual acuity was 20/1500. Six out of 16 eyes had total loss of sight (37.5%) and 3 eyes required evisceration (18.8%). Multivariate linear regression revealed poor presenting visual acuity (P=0.031) and lack of fundus view due to vitritis (P=0.02) as prognostic factors of poor visual outcome. CONCLUSION: Visual outcome of endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis is poor. Poor presenting visual acuity and lack of fundus view predict poor visual outcome. High index of suspicion for endophthalmitis is important in Klebsiella sepsis patients with complaints of ocular symptoms. Ophthalmological screening is recommended in non-communicable patients with Klebsiella sepsis.
