The importance of a university student’s transition into the workforce is a key factor for planning better higher education policies and new paths of action. This research analyzes the interrelationship between competences, the satisfaction with career training and their predisposition to job mobility with the preparation for entering the workforce of the university students through an ad-hoc model approach of a causal relationship between these factors. 1,328 final year undergraduate students of four universities participated in this study through the Career Guidance and Training Questionnaire collect data. The results obtained show the suitability of the model with a good index fit and causal relationships that significantly influence the perception that the university student has when facing the process of entering the workforce.

Competency design stands out among the methodological and educational model changes introduced by the EHEA (European Higher Education Area). This concept is a key factor when developing programs based on academic and professional profiles that respond to social and labour market needs. The UOC eLearning GPS is based on competences and is meant to reduce the gap between formal training and the reality of the labour market and social needs that traditionally has characterized the university. These aspects are the basis of this application. Using a language of competences, the application helps the students identify their main skills and capacities, as well as areas of improvement. Following the model of competency design, this tool helps the user detect and reduce the gap between a starting position of competence and his or her learning and training expectations. UOC eLearning GPS application offers solutions and learning itineraries closer to the user’s real learning needs.

For almost a century now, the concern of universities about student satisfaction with teaching quality has been increasing. A literature review has enabled the attributes of quality teaching to be classified into three main types: pedagogical, generic, and disciplinary. The aim of this paper is to identify the variables that, in the opinion of students, most influence student satisfaction regarding teaching quality. A total of 476 undergraduate students participated from Business Administration and Management of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). An ad hoc questionnaire was used to assess student satisfaction with teaching. Parametric (Logistic Regression Analysis) and non-parametric (Decision Tree) models were used. Our data indicate that if the professor explains the subject clearly, is concerned to find out whether the explanations have been understood, and carefully prepares the classes; the teaching-quality assessment will be very satisfactory. The identification of the attributes of quality teaching will enable universities to draw up initial and ongoing training plans for their teaching staff, bearing in mind the crucial role played by generic, pedagogical, and disciplinary competences in professor-student interaction.

The study surveyed the use of Internet among undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. 240 questionnaires were distributed using a stratified sampling method. A total of 190 questionnaires were returned and all were usable. The access point for using Internet among the undergraduates was mostly the computer center of Dhaka University. Findings revealed that a high percentage of the Internet was used among the undergraduates. Some problems they face in their use of the Internet include slow speed of the connection, limited number of PCs and other related issues of using Internet. The study recommends that the university and arts faculty should provide more access points for the students. Departmental computer labs, Internet facilities and incorporating ICT courses in the academic syllabi should be started to those departments where it is needed to overcome the problems. Moreover, modern net connection technologies need to be used and training program needs to be started for the undergraduates.

The chapter explores whether the educational policies introduced by the Romanian Government during the last twenty years are examples of good practice for other European countries facing the issue of Roma integration. The authors raise the question of whether the voices of Roma intellectual élites, who represent the “products” of those educational policies, are strong enough to drive the Roma minority towards common and sustained efforts for their social integration. What are the cross products of these educational policies? Additionally, they consider the case of Roma students within the University of Oradea in Romania and examine their attitudes towards academic learning, motivational factors, academic self-efficacy, faced difficulties, and potential ways to achieve higher rates of student retention. For a more in-depth analysis of the role and impact of those policies and the possible challenges/difficulties encountered, the authors interviewed several decision makers, such as academic staff, NGO representatives, and current/former Roma students. The chapter concludes with suggested solutions for detected difficulties.

At a recent time, a number of academics ranging from the ‘practical and theoretical academics,’ ‘political academicians,’ ‘academic politicians’ to ‘academic bureaucrats’ are encouragingly striving for responding to the demands of internationalization of Higher Education because of the pressure of global education interests. With the spirit of ‘education liberation’ relying on the General Agreement of Trade in Services (GATS) as a result of ‘industrial globalization matrix’ which is associated with economic motives initiated by the World Trade Organization (WTO) makes some developed countries enthusiastically promote their higher education institutions to a number of countries. Consequently, the invigoration of Indonesian government to all domestic universities to immediately program their institutions as the agents of economy development. Nonetheless, the implementation and management of Tri Dharma are not only specified on developing the strength of national economy but also on social conscience to make the current creativity and innovation can be more relevant to the need of subsistence resources development based on Indonesian characters and uniqueness driven by the moral sense of humanity, fairness and civilized policies. Therefore, the revitalization process should be accordingly manifested toward the principles of Tri Dharma of the university as mandated by Pancasila, Constitution of 1945, Law, GBHN and all of the derivative regulations, not strictly due to the insistence of global pressures. Thus, human resources must be the main agenda to revitalize among other potentials in generating and optimizing the ethic of scientific works in Tri Dharma activities in fulfilling the current necessitates without harming the interests of Indonesian populace. Finally, when Foreign Higher Education policies (FHE) are commercially inclined to globalize their education system and research which is relatively ‘capitalism’, thus our national higher education should be increasingly characterized by the humanity affectionate which elevates the dignity of Indonesia by providing serious devotions and concerns on social and community service.

Purpose This paper aims to establish the level of use of the electronic resources at the University of Venda, which is one of the previously disadvantaged universities in South Africa. It identifies the different electronic resources used at the university, determines the level of awareness and training in the use of these resources and suggests ways in which electronic resources may be enhanced. The rapid changes in the information and communication technology (ICTs) have influenced service delivery in academic libraries in terms of how information is gathered, accessed, retrieved and used. Hence, electronic resources are invaluable research tools in academic libraries in the twenty-first century. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research methodology was adopted, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant to get in-depth information. The target population was all third-year students registered with the School of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Venda. The third year undergraduate students from this particular school where chosen because statistics revealed that these students where ranked among the top in the use of computers. Findings The findings revealed that the level of usage of these resources by undergraduate students is elementary and limited to SABINET and EBSCO host. Undergraduate student’s level of awareness of the different electronic resources is low. They confused electronic resources to Web-based internet sources. It also revealed that the level of awareness and training in the use of these resources is still generic, as training is mostly a once off orientation at the first year. Research limitations/implications This paper focuses on third year undergraduate students who were using computers because the researchers were interested in finding out whether students using computers were also using electronic resources. It excluded other profiles such as age, gender and computer usage behaviour of electronic resources. Practical implications Adequate use and knowledge of electronic resources at universities is instrumental towards realisation of the country’s ICT Strategy and the outcome-based education (OBE) model of teaching movement. Suggestions are made to the university, the university library, university librarians and the Library Association of South Africa on how to enhance the use of electronic resources. Originality/value It establishes the level of use of electronic resources in one of South African historically disadvantaged universities, a point of contact to other previously South African disadvantaged universities and make suggestions on how electronic resources may be enhanced. It adds to the body of knowledge on the use of electronic resources in academic libraries in South African universities.

The development of professional practices during the university stage is a fundamental factor for quality skills development. For many students, it is the first real experience in a professional context, so continuous monitoring by teachers is necessary. This article presents an innovative proposal to develop the follow-up of the professional practices of the degree in Primary Education, and two Masters’ in Psychopedagogy and Special Educational Needs using a learning management system (LMS) (Blackboard). The experience was developed by a team of teachers from the departments of Didactics and Educational Organization and Research Methods and Educational Diagnosis of the University of Seville (Spain). The aspects to be studied are the development of communication, reflection, and collaborative learning processes during the internship period. After an explicit agreement, 24 students (10 from the course “Professional Practices I” in undergraduate students; and the others from the Master’s) committed to periodically using the blog designed ad hoc for this experience. A content analysis of the speeches posted on the blog was carried out, examining the changes, the advantages, and the disadvantages that this model entailed. It allowed observing similarities and differences between both groups of students. As the main conclusion, there were some differences between the two groups of students, regarding the number, type, and contents of interventions; there were no differences in the assessment of the methodology, all the students thought that it was a very positive assessment of the experience for generating information exchange networks among colleagues and teachers. Finally, the relevance of constant monitoring of the academic tutor was highlighted.

This paper aims to discuss the process of internationalization of the HEI, based on the Bologna Process. An exploratory study was made to identify barriers for the internationalization of a local institution: The University of Taubate. The main topics were the internationalization of the firm and the Bologna Process. This HEI is located in the Vale Paraíba Paulista, a growing and strategic region in Brazilian soil. Education and skilled labor are key elements to regional development. The essay consists of a case study. Particularities from the Brazilian Higher Education System and the European Model are analyzed. They are combined with the Institution’s policies. The results show the current stage of the action lines that direct the application of the European model, at the University of Taubate. The conclusions consider the convergence of the Bologna Process with the guidelines of the Brazilian higher education policies, and point out some difficulties and opportunities that may be considered if the HEI decides to adopt an internationalization model.
