Abstract: One of the most vital anatomical structure within the mandible is the mental foramen. The significance of this structure come since it is the anatomical opening of mandibular canal on the mandible bilaterally. The neuro-vascular complex leaving from the foramen has a critical and important role and giving supply to the skin and muscles of the chin, lower lip, the associated gingiva and mucosa following to the lower premolars. Subsequently, the location knowledge of the mental foramen considers an awfully significant for dental specialists to dodge harming this imperative structure via the dental working on this region, as in dental anaesthesia, dental surgery, dental anaesthesia and root canal treatment. The aim of study: The point of the think about: To assess the site of the mental foramen in relative to the mandibular premolars, depended on the panoramic and CBCT and O.P.G images. Materials and Methods: The current study involved the previous articles published from 1997 till 2019, with respect to the site of mental foramen in elderly and adult patients, in any case of the gender. All these studies were used on either the panoramic and cone-beam computed tomographic images for visualizing the site of the mental foramen. Results: Regarding the outcomes of the previous studies included in this review, the statistics appeared that the first common area of mental foramen was beneath the apices of lower second premolars in the percentage of 49.99%, the other second common area of mental foramen was between the apices of the lower first and second premolars in the percentage of 42.30%. Conclusion: The mental foramen was mostly found beneath the apices of lower first and second premolars and then between the apices of the lower first and second premolars.

Aim: Knowledge of the position of the mental foramen is important to prepare strategy when administering regional anesthesia, performing dental surgical procedures, endodontic treatments. Also, it is critical to analyze diameter of mental foramen in sagittal, coronal, and axial images.  The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the diameter of the MF in different planes from CBCT images. Methodology: This study was designed at Department of Endodontics, Dicle University, Diyarbakır, Turkey. One hundred twenty three (67 female, 56 male) CBCT scans that met the study criteria were obtained. All images were obtained from i-CAT (Imaging Sciences International, Hatfield, PA). Data were analyzed using Student’s t-tests and Tukey HSD tests. Results: For the analysis of age, data were divided into four groups: 12–17, 18–29, 30–49, and ≥50 years. The data were also divided into two groups by gender. Axial and coronal image measurements were also divided into right and left. There was a statistical difference compared with females and males (p<0.05). In the coronal plane, the right region showed significant differences in measurements between the groups (p<0.05). In the axial plane, there was no statistically significant difference between them (p>0.05). The differences between the groups in the left region in the axial plane measurements were significant (p<0.05). Conclusions: Using CBCT imaging superimposition of anatomical structures can be eliminated. It is important that determine that the size of the mental foramen. ABSTRACT Objective: The styloid process (SP) is a bony projection, located just anterior to the stylomastoid foramen, the normal length of which is approximately 20–30 mm. The length of SP when exceeds 30 mm it is said to “elongated.” The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the prevalence of elongated SP (ESP) by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) examination in Turkish subpopulation and its relation to gender and age. Materials and Methods: This study analyzed CBCT of 1000 patients who were randomly selected to participate and were aged from 14 to 78 years. Any radiograph with questionable SP was excluded from the study. The apparent length and thickness of the SP were measured by two dental and maxillofacial radiologists. The ESP was classified with radiographic appearance-based morphology of elongation. The data were analyzed with the IBM SPSS Statistics 20.0. Results: The mean age of patients was 42.49 ± 14.83 years. The length of SP was measured over 30 mm in 151 patients (15.1%). A total of 151 CBCT showed ESP, of which 87 (57.6%) were noticed in males and 64 (42.4%) in female patients. The length of right-sided SP ranged from 30.05 to 85.49 mm and left-sided SP from 30.14 to 83.72 mm. Conclusion: CBCT is a valuable diagnostic imaging tool which makes accurate length measurements. It is important for the clinicians to be aware of natural variations of the SP whose clinical importance is not well understood.
