A chain-flail delimber-debarker-chipper (CFDDC) was adapted for treating smaller trees than normal by replacing the standard flails with lighter ones, and by reducing flail drum rotation speed. The machine produced 16 full containers (24 t each) for the standard configuration and 24 full containers for the innovative one. For each container the researchers measured: original tree mass, chip mass, time consumption and fuel use. Results indicated that the innovative setting accrued a 12% improvement on fiber recovery compared with the standard setting (control). At the same time, productivity increased by 20% and fuel consumption was reduced by 30%. Product quality was largely unaffected, with bark content remaining below the 1% threshold specification. If at all, product quality was improved through the reduction of fine particles, possibly derived from less diffused fraying. These results have triggered the real scale adoption of the new setting by contractors who participated in the study. The success of the innovative treatment is likely explained by its better alignment with the weaker structure of small trees from low-yielding stands.

The surface structure of a ferrofluid was investigated by means of non-specular X-ray reflection. Strong intensity that is impossible to explain by surface fluctuations due to capillary waves was observed. It can be related to lateral correlation within aggregates of super-paramagnetic fine particles in the vicinity of the specimen surface. The fractal dimension of these surface-induced aggregates and the surface-tension coefficient of the ferrofluid were simultaneously determined. The fractal dimension was found to be around 1.1, indicating a chain-like character of the aggregates that have few branches. Strong and anisotropic interaction among the particles, as well as irreversible aggregation kinetics must be the origin of such a high-density and low-fractal-dimension system of dipolar 10 nm sized particles. The temperature variation of the fractal dimension indicated that the fractal aggregates stabilize themselves by losing their branches at increasing temperatures.

Abstract The present work is an attempt to study the effect of non-response at both occasions in search of good successive (rotation) sampling over two occasions. A chain-type ratio and regression estimator has been proposed for estimating the population mean at current occasion in presence of non-response at both the occasion in two-occasion successive (rotation) sampling. Detail behaviors of proposed estimators have been studied. Proposed estimators are compared with the estimators for the same situations but in the absence of non-response. Performances of the proposed estimators have been demonstrated via empirical studies.

This paper presents a new 3-dimensional multi-body dynamic model of a chain-type continuously variable unit (CVU). The modeling requirements and assumptions are presented first. Then, the paper discusses the approaches developed to mathematically represent the chain, pulleys, and their interactions in terms of contact and friction. Three dimensional representation of the chain is given. Actual geometries of the pins and pulleys are captured, including crowning on either member. The model is then used to investigate the effects of different operating conditions, including speed ratio and torque, on the quasi-static performance of a CVU. Several metrics are discussed to characterize the behavior of an example CVU under practical operating conditions; these include torque capacity and the ratio of clamping forces. The predictions presented show the sensitivity of the model to these operating conditions. Finally, trends that describe the CVU quasi-static behavior are explained in context of the parameters studied.
