Persuasion overtly foregrounds the self as embodied: physical accidents and sickness are recurrent. Sir Walter Eliot’s belief in the time-defying bodily grace of nobility is subject to Austen’s harshest irony. The transition from vertically ordered place to horizontal space in Persuasion is more extreme than in any other of the completed novels. Anne Elliot’s movement from social exclusiveness to socially inclusive possibility allows Austen to challenge gender and class hierarchies traditionally held to be inborn. Her writerly experimentation expands the possibilities of narrative perspective to encompass the porous boundaries of the physical, the emotional and the rational that constitute any moment of consciousness. Her focalisation techniques in the text look directly towards Woolf’s stylist innovations. A chain of references to guns and shooting gathers into the novel contentious contemporary discursive networks on class relations, notions of masculinity and the nature of creaturely life.

Abstract The present work is an attempt to study the effect of non-response at both occasions in search of good successive (rotation) sampling over two occasions. A chain-type ratio and regression estimator has been proposed for estimating the population mean at current occasion in presence of non-response at both the occasion in two-occasion successive (rotation) sampling. Detail behaviors of proposed estimators have been studied. Proposed estimators are compared with the estimators for the same situations but in the absence of non-response. Performances of the proposed estimators have been demonstrated via empirical studies.

This paper presents a new 3-dimensional multi-body dynamic model of a chain-type continuously variable unit (CVU). The modeling requirements and assumptions are presented first. Then, the paper discusses the approaches developed to mathematically represent the chain, pulleys, and their interactions in terms of contact and friction. Three dimensional representation of the chain is given. Actual geometries of the pins and pulleys are captured, including crowning on either member. The model is then used to investigate the effects of different operating conditions, including speed ratio and torque, on the quasi-static performance of a CVU. Several metrics are discussed to characterize the behavior of an example CVU under practical operating conditions; these include torque capacity and the ratio of clamping forces. The predictions presented show the sensitivity of the model to these operating conditions. Finally, trends that describe the CVU quasi-static behavior are explained in context of the parameters studied.

The major initial products of the self-reaction of α-tetralylperoxyls (C10H11O2•) in chlorobenzene at 303–353 K are equal concentrations of α-tetralol and α-tetralone in ~90% yield based on the number of initiating radicals. These yields are consistent with the non-radical (Russell) mechanism for self-reaction. Low concentrations of bis(α-tetralyl) peroxide are produced, indicating that there is a small but detectable free-radical contribution towards termination. C10H11O2• undergoes β-scission in this temperature range but steady-state concentrations of C10H11• are too low to influence the termination rate constant 2kt, or react with C10H11O2• to give (C10H11O2. α-Tetralol to α-tetralone ratios and total yields of these products are significantly less than 1 and 100%, respectively, in methanol and acetonitrile. Formaldehyde is produced in methanol indicating the involvement of α-hydroxymethylperoxyls, derived from the solvent, in termination. There is no evidence for a chain reaction or a zwitterion intermediate for self-reaction of C10H11O2• in solution.
