Abstract The main aim of this work was to assess different suitable strategies for the remediation of groundwater contaminated with the leachate from an old, not functional landfill located next to Hořkovec open cast mine, in the Czech Republic. The leachate consisted of mainly chlorinated aliphatic compounds and aromatic volatile compounds. The site, that had already been treated, was observed to show rebounding effects after the first remediation treatment. This article analyses the possibilities of using different types of remediation technologies that include in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) with different oxidants (potassium permanganate, sodium permanganate and sodium persulfate), as well as in-situ bioremediation (ISB), and the combination of both types of treatment. From the results of the analysis it was concluded that the best option for this case was to carry out a pre-treatment of the area by ISCO with sodium persulfate as the oxidant agent and then a further biological treatment.

Abstract The Langsettian species Cordaites karvinensis Šimůnek and C. sustae Šimůnek were found conspecific, with C. karvinensis chosen as a correct name. These species come from the same coal seam of the Upper Suchá Member (Upper Silesian Basin, the Czech Republic). Abaxial cuticle from C. karvinensis was found conspicuously similar to Cordaabaxicutis cf. jaworznoensis from the Lower Suchá Member from the strata near the Namurian/Westphalian boundary, as well as to Cordaabaxicutis jaworznoensis Šimůnek et Florjan described from the Orzesze Beds (Duckmantian) from Poland. The abaxial cuticles of all these species are papillate. It is probable that these species are members of one evolutionary lineage, however without information on the leaf morphology connected to the dispersed cuticles of Cordaabaxicutis, this opinion remains hypothetical.

Abstract New faunistic data of Psychodidae (Diptera) from Western Bohemia are presented (266 sites explored in 1993-2010, incl. literary data). Altogether 96 species of moth flies (adults) of 36 genera (55 % of all species of the family known from the Czech Republic are known to occur in the western Hercynian mountains, Sokolov open-cast coal mines, dumps and adjacent localities. 26 of these species were classified in the national Red List 2005 of threatened invertebrates. Critically endangered species CR (14), endangered species EN (4), vulnerable species VU (8) and without a Red status so far are two species nationally scarce NS. An extreme water chemistry of some mine localities (pH, alkalinity, N-NH4+, N-NO3−, N org., total N, total P, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cl−, SO42−, Mn and conductivity) in a relation to collected adults were studied. The relationship between site altitude of all localities and the number of species as well as critically endangered species is accounted.
