Applied Metadata Management Systems for Post-Production

Knowledge intensive applications rely on the usage of knowledge artifacts, called patterns, to represent in a compact and semantically rich way huge quantities of heterogeneous raw data. Due to pattern characteristics of patterns, specific systems are required for pattern management in order to model, store, retrieve and manipulate patterns in an efficient and effective way. Several theoretical and industrial approaches (relying on standard proposals, metadata management and business intelligence solutions) have already been proposed for pattern management. However, no critical comparison of the existing approaches has been proposed so far. The aim of this chapter is to provide such a comparison. In particular, specific issues concerning pattern management systems, pattern models and pattern languages are discussed. Several parameters are also identified that will be used in evaluating the effectiveness of theoretical and industrial proposals. The chapter is concluded with a discussion concerning additional issues in the context of pattern management.

O objetivo deste trabalho é alcançar um entendimento melhor dos requisitos básicos para um gerenciador de metadados. operar satisfatoriamente, além de testar ao máximo um modelo de armazenamento avaliando o seu desempenho, diante dos diversos tipos de dados geográficos existentes. O trabalho aponta a necessidade de se conhecer melhor o desempenho de sistemas já desenvolvidos, ou em desenvolvimento, com objetivos de gerenciar metadados geográficos digitais. Semantic technologies have recently gained considerable influence and attention in the field of technical communication and information management. While metadata management is already a well-known field of content management technologies, its semantic extension addresses more recently, for example, problems of model-based product development and related content engineering processes. On the other hand, dynamic search technology and content delivery can benefit from semantic modelling by enhancing search functionalities or by integrating various data sources utilizing semantic mapping. In this evolving environment, we propose a logical layer of content correlations as so-called semantic correlation rules (SCR). This layer can be understood as an interface between content management systems, semantic modelling systems and content delivery portals. Semantic correlation rules serve as a light-weight ontology consisting primarily of untyped semantic relations between metadata classes. In doing so, class-to-class linking mechanisms can be implemented in content delivery and search environments while serving as a basis for the previously introduced microDoc concept

Η διατριβή έχει σκοπό να παρουσιάσει την σχεδίαση ενός περιβάλλοντος προσανατολισμένο σε υπηρεσίες (Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)), για να διευκολύνει τις εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες μέσω δια-δικτύου στα πλαίσια ενός η-πανεπιστημίου. Ο σκοπός είναι η ανάπτυξη και υποστήριξη ενός συνόλου διαλειτουργικών και δια-δικτυακών υπηρεσιών που υπάγονται σε κατάλληλα πρότυπα (standards). Επίσης έχει σχεδιαστεί η αναβάθμιση των εικονικών περιβαλλόντων μάθησης (Virtual Learning Environments) ενσωματώνοντας τα με τις ψηφιακές βιβλιοθήκες (Digital Libraries). Ο σχεδιασμός IVLEDL (Integration Virtual Learning Environments with Digital Libraries) στοχεύει στην αυτοματοποίηση των ηλεκτρονικών υπηρεσιών με την κατανομή των ηλεκτρονικών πηγών και των εκπαιδευτικών δραστηριοτήτων που μπορούν να υποστηριχθούν με την χρήση των σημασιολογικών τεχνολογιών. Τα συστήματα διαχείρισης ηλεκτρονικών πηγών (Learning Resource Metadata Management Systems) μπορούν να υποστηρίξουν τις αποθήκες δεδομένων ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης (learning resources repositories) δίνοντας βέλτιστη επαναχρησιμοποίηση της αποθηκευμένης πληροφορίας. Ο στόχος είναι ο σχεδιασμός ενός νέου μοντέλου ψηφιακών βιβλιοθηκών που θα διευκολύνει τόσο τους εκπαιδευόμενους, όσο και τους εργαζόμενους των βιβλιοθηκών να αναθεωρήσουν τον τρόπο που αυτοί αναπτύσσουν, χειρίζονται και παραδίδουν πηγές και υπηρεσίες. Εστιάζεται δε στον αντίκτυπο της τεχνολογίας στις η-βιβλιοθήκες για την δόμηση ενός συνόλου δια-λειτουργικών υπηρεσιών δικτύου βασιζόμενων σε SOA προσέγγιση που υπάγεται σε κατάλληλα πρότυπα. Η ιδέα είναι να δοθούν επίσης οντολογικές περιγραφές των Υπηρεσιών ιστού (Web Services) που θα επεξεργαστούν από κατάλληλα εργαλεία οντολογιών. Οι ψηφιακές βιβλιοθήκες έχουν κύρια επιρροή στον σχεδιασμό των συστημάτων ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης. Ακόμη έχει ολοκληρωθεί μία έρευνα για να καθορισθούν και να εξεταστούν οι κρίσιμες παράμετροι οι οποίες μπορεί να είναι σημαντικές στον σχεδιασμό ενός περιβάλλοντος ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης και να καθορισθούν κάποιες από τις συνθήκες, που τα πανεπιστήμια θα πρέπει να αναπτύξουν για να υποστηρίξουν ένα περιβάλλον ηλεκτρονικής μάθησης και να βελτιώσουν την διαδικασία μάθησης. Επίσης έχει γίνει η ανάπτυξη ενός μοντέλου εκπαιδευτικών περιβαλλόντων, πως μέσα από τα ήδη υπάρχοντα θα γίνει ένα ειδικό μοντέλο για 'e-universities’, ανάλογα με τις ανάγκες των εκπαιδευομένων και ορίζοντας ένα νέο θεωρητικό μοντέλο ψηφιακών βιβλιοθηκών βασιζόμενη στο 5S φόρμαλ μοντέλο. Η διατριβή μελετά διεξοδικά την ανάπτυξη των εκπαιδευτικών περιβαλλόντων διασύνδεσης, ψηφιακών βιβλιοθηκών με εικονικά περιβάλλοντα υιοθετώντας την τεχνολογία του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού.
