‘Confessional’ is an adjective first applied to the poems of the American poets Robert Lowell, Anne Sexton, Sylvia Plath, W.D. Snodgrass, John Berryman and Theodore Roethke to refer to the autobiographical nature of their work. The confessional poet considers the world, an extension of herself. All confessional poetry springs from the need to confess; confessional poets bare their soul and body and hide nothing between their self and their direct expression of that self. They put no restrictions on subject matter, no matter how personal. Usually anti-elegant and anti- establishment, confessional poems are almost like war-cries triumphing over pain and defeat. The best confessional poems are more than confessions: they are revelations, about their creator’s personal vexations, dilemmas and predicaments, and above all about the human condition. This review work tries to prove that confessional poetry was always present in Writings by women in India. This work is a literature review of known writings by women in India.

AbstractDenise Duhamel and Michael Burkard continue the work of postconfessional poets like Robert Lowell, Sylvia Plath, and Anne Sexton using humor to explore culturally taboo topics and expand the traditional range of poetic subjects. The works of Duhamel and Burkard often explore subjects that are secret, shameful or unspoken made approachable through tender and satirical humor to turn these issues into something beautiful. Duhamel uses humor to critique American culture and the domestic arena with the clarity of an outsider while Burkard uses humor to write about loss and recovery, discovering the fantastic in the familiar. Through humor in first-person confessional poems these poets create a more open environment where the poet and their audiences may confront the truth of themselves and the world in which they live.

O suicídio da poeta Sylvia Plath abalou o universo literário em 1963. As associações entre poesia e autossacrifício na obra de poetas vinculados ao rótulo “confessional” foram cimentadas, mitificou-se a morte de Plath, e surgiram debates éticos que jamais cessaram. No calor desse momento, ainda em 1966, Anne Sexton, que conhecera Sylvia Plath brevemente anos antes, publica um texto memorialístico no periódico Tri-Quarterly. Essas memórias de Sexton, registradas sob o título “The Barfly Ought to Sing” [“O Bebum Deve Cantar”], são o tema deste artigo: heterogêneo em sua feitura – já que alterna recordações de Plath, leitura de sua poesia e dois poemas inéditos de Sexton –, o texto tampouco é homogêneo no sentido de sua homenagem, pois não procura ocultar uma tensão competitiva que perpassa o elo afetivo. Acredita-se que o texto possua uma dimensão crítica que foi frequentemente subestimada. Através da escrita das memórias, Sexton parece ter buscado formular uma visão da poesia confessional: inclui ela própria e Plath enquanto referências dessa poética e nomeia, a seu modo, alguns de seus elementos fundamentais.

The creative genius of Kamala Das, one of the most prominent voices of protest in Indian English Literature is often compared to the American poet Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton as both of them used the confessional mode of writing in their poetry. Kamala Das, born in 1934 in Thrissur district of kerela emerged as a distinctive poetic voice with the publication of the first volume of her poetry Summer in Calcutta. In her poems Kamala Das has always raised a voice against the conventionalized figure of a woman, seeking a more dignified and honourable position for woman as an entity. In fact her poetry addresses the most critical issue in the contemporary society-the need to awaken the women. Her poetry collections include- Summer in Calcutta (1965), The Descendents (1967), The Old Playhouse and Other poems (1973), Tonight, This Savage Rite (1979), The Collected Poems (1984). My Story published in 1976 is her autobiography

An old friend, Jim Cleary, working on the monumentalBibliography of Australian Literatureat the University of Queensland, recently rang to tell me about the elusive modernist poet Anna Wickham. ‘Wickham’ is the pen-name of Edith Alice Mary Harper, ‘one of the most significant feminist poets of modernism’, who published between the 1910s and the 1930s. The author of over one thousand poems, covering a remarkable diversity of forms, Wickham was described in the memoir of American publisher Louis Untermeyer as ‘a remarkable gypsy of a woman’. During her tempestuous life, she mixed with members of the London Chelsea and Bloomsbury sets, plunged into the literary and artistic circles of the Parisiandemi-monde, had a brief sexual relationship with pioneer American modernist poet H.D. (Hilda Dolittle), was sexually spurned by lesbian heiress and literary patron Natalie Clifford Barney, and became closely aligned with D.H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda von Richthofen, as well as Dylan Thomas and Caitlin MacNamara, falling out with the latter couple after throwing a drunken ‘Thomas and fellow writer Lawrence Durrell out of the house’. She was also close friends with the erratic novelist Malcolm Lowry, whetted the appetites of Henry Miller and Anaïs Nin, and helped to mentor the young Stephen Spender. Somewhat like T.S. Eliot's wife Vivien Haigh-Wood, she was incarcerated at one point in a mental institution by her husband, solicitor Patrick Hepburn, And, like Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton. she died by her own hand, hanging herself in her decaying home on Parliament Hill, London, following the freezing winter of 1947.

Some scholars have argued that writing poetry was harmful for the psychological health of Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton. Both writers seem to have suffered from affective disorders, but their poetry probably provided a cathartic benefit for them and helped them gain cognitive distance from their inner conflicts, since the writing of poetry requires a great deal of technical revision that may have an effect similar to cognitive therapy. It is argued, therefore, that writing may have helped both of these poets to survive longer than they might have had they not written.
