The drawbacks associated with bio-fuels can be minimized by making modifications to combustion chamber. Modification of combustion chamber is achieved by providing an air gap in between the crown and the body of the piston with the top crown made of low thermal conductivity material. Experimentation is carried on a diesel engine with brass as piston crown material and karanja as test fuel, which is found to be a better alternative fuel based on the tests carried out prior to modification. Investigations are carried out on the performance of the engine with modified combustion chamber consisting of air gap insulated piston with 2 mm air gap with brass crown when fuelled with karanja oil. Comparative studies are made between the two configurations of engine with and without modification at an injection timing of 29obTDC. Performance, heat balance and emission plots are made with respect to brake power. Fuel consumption increased with modification. The mechanical and volumetric efficiencies are similar in both the cases. Indicated and brake thermal efficiencies got reduced with modification. But, it is good to see that HC and CO emissions are showing positive trend. Thus, the present investigation hints the possibility of improvements while making piston modification and providing air gap insulation.

Diesel engines are employed as the major propulsion power sources because of their simple, robust structure and high fuel economy. It is expected that diesel engines will be widely used in the foreseeable future. However, an increase in the use of diesel engines causes a shortage of fossil fuel and results in a greater degree of pollution. To regulate the above, identifying an alternative fuel to the diesel engine with less pollution is essential. Ethanol–diesel emulsion is one such method, used for the preparation of an alternative fuel for the diesel engine. Experimental investigations were carried out to compare the performance of diesel fuel with different ratios 50D: 50E (50 per cent diesel No: 2: 50 per cent ethanol –100 per cent proof) and 60D: 40E emulsified fuels. In the next phase, experiments were conducted for the selected emulsified fuel ratio 50D: 50E for different high injection pressures and the results are compared. The results show that for the emulsified fuel ratios, there is a marginal increase in torque, power, NO x, emissions, and decreasing values of carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions at the maximum speed conditions, compared with diesel fuel. Also, it is found that an increase in injection pressure of the engine running with emulsified fuel decreases CO and smoke emissions especially between 1500 to 2000 r/min with respect to the diesel fuel.

ABSTRACT: This research evaluated the performance of a diesel engine in an agricultural tractor, using Diesel S500 (B5) and mixture with 3% (ED3), 6% (ED6), 9% (ED9), 12% (ED12) and 15% (ED15) of hydrous ethanol. Variables evaluated were the power, torque, specific fuel consumption, torque reserve, speed reserve and elasticity index of engine. Results indicated that using B5 and ED3 the values of torque and engine power not differ, in addition, with the ED3 the fuel consumption was lower than 5.92%. Using ED12, power has reduced in 2.97%, compared with B5, while their fuel consumption had no difference. With ED15, the power was lower 6.30% and the fuel consumption increase 3.77%, both compared with B5. Torque reserve value was increased with increasing the ethanol content in B5, reducing the speed reserve and elasticity index of engine. Ethanol in Diesel S500 (B5) can be used as an alternative fuel in agricultural tractor engines without presenting high changes in the performance, since the ethanol content is at low percentages, up to 12%.

India is a fastest growing major economy in 2018, with a growth rate of 7.4 per cent GDP. Energy use in developing countries like India has risen more than fourfold over the past three decades and is expected to continue increasing rapidly in the future. Energy is essential for a economical growth of any county. Biofuels derived from renewable resources will become a alternative supplement for the conventional energy sources in meeting the increasing requirements for transportation fuels. In the present paper, effort are made to evaluate the pongamia biodiesel of 20% Blend (PB20) with neat diesel as an alternative fuel for CI engine. The pongamia oil is converted into pongamia methyl esters (Biodiesel) using two step process Esterification and Transesterification. The fuel properties of raw pongamia methyl ester and blend (PB20) are evaluated as per ASTM/BIS standards to check their feasibility as an alternative fuel. The prepared blend is used to run the computerized CRDI diesel engine at different load conditions. From the experimental investigation made, PB20 has a potential to be as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. The performance of PB20 with respect to Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTHE), Mechanical Efficiency, Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP) and Specific Fuel Consumption (SFC) is comparatively low when compared to neat diesel. The P-Ɵ and P-V diagram shows that the combustion of PB20 is as similar to that of neat diesel.
