The glycidyl-POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes, Polysilsesquioxane, POSS) (Gly-POSS) and trisilanolisooctyl-POSS (HO-POSS) were applied as functional additives influencing on the viscoelastic properties of the dynamic vulcanized PLA/ENR (poly(lactic acid)/epoxidized natural rubber) blends. The plasticizing effect of HO-POSS on PLA/ENR melt, leading to the decrease of complex viscosity at 160 °C, was observed. After the incorporation of Gly-POSS into PLA/ENR blends the complex viscosity increased confirming that the epoxy groups of Gly-POSS were able to react with the functional groups of ENR and the groups present at the end of PLA chains. The incorporation of Gly-POSS into 40:60 PLA/ENR blend provided significant enhancement of the storage shear modulus G’ at 30 °C. Furthermore, the glass transition temperatures Tg of ENR phase for PLA/ENR/Gly-POSS blends were shifted to higher values of temperature as compared with blends modified by HO-POSS. Strong reduction of the elongation at break Eb for 40:60 PLA/ENR/Gly-POSS blend indicated that Gly-POSS particles acted as multifunctional cross-links reducing elasticity of the material. The modification of 40:60 PLA/ENR blend by HO-POSS molecules led to lower values of composting coefficient KC indicating stronger deterioration of the mechanical properties that resulted from more intense degradation processes occurring during disposal in soil.

The study aimed to prepare sustainable and degradable elastic blends of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) that were reinforced with flax fiber (FF) and montmorillonite (MMT), simultaneously filling the gap in the literature regarding the PLA-containing polymer blends filled with natural additives. The performed study reveals that FF incorporation into ENR/PLA blend may cause a significant improvement in tensile strength from (10 ± 1) MPa for the reference material to (19 ± 2) MPa for the fibers-filled blend. Additionally, it was found that MMT employment in the role of the filler might contribute to ENR/PLA plasticization and considerably promote the blend elongation up to 600%. This proves the successful creation of the unique and eco-friendly PLA-containing polymer blend exhibiting high elasticity. Moreover, thanks to the performed accelerated thermo-oxidative and ultraviolet (UV) aging, it was established that MMT incorporation may delay the degradation of ENR/PLA blends under the abovementioned conditions. Additionally, mold tests revealed that plant-derived fiber addition might highly enhance the ENR/PLA blend’s biodeterioration potential enabling faster and more efficient growth of microorganisms. Therefore, materials presented in this research may become competitive and eco-friendly alternatives to commonly utilized petro-based polymeric products.

Thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation of epoxidized natural rubber containing 25 mol % expoxidation (ENR25) with different four antioxidants were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The four antioxidants, viz., poly-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroqui- noline (RD), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenedianine (4020), N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl- p-phenylenedi-amine (4010NA), and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MB) were used. The results indicate that the ENR25 vulcanizates with antioxidant 4020 or 4010NA is the optimal antioxidant for ENR25.
