Comparison of Family Functioning, Personality Traits, and Attachment Styles in People with Internet Addiction and Healthy Controls

This study aims at examining whether adolescent girls diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and their parents differ in perceiving the different aspects of family functioning. Moreover, the discrepancy between adolescent girls and healthy controls on Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales dimensions, family communication, and family satisfaction is investigated. The study includes 36 female anorexia patients and their parents and 36 healthy controls. The results showed a different view between mothers and their daughters with regard to the dimension of rigidity. In addition, girls with anorexia nervosa were less satisfied about family environment and rated their families as less communicative, flexible, cohesive, and more disengaged, compared to controls.

The Relationship

Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between personality traits and internet addiction behavior. Within the same industry background, job satisfaction was measured to test whether there is any mediating effect toward the relationship between personality traits and internet behavior. Design/methodology/approach A sample of 271 employees from financial institutions was selected, and IBM SPSS was used to perform descriptive statistic, correlation analysis and partial regression analysis, to test out three main hypotheses developed in this study. Findings The results indicate that personality traits, namely, agreeableness and emotional stability are negatively related to internet addiction behavior. However, job satisfaction does not mediate the influence of personality traits toward internet addiction behavior, even though the results indicated personality traits, namely, agreeableness, conscientiousness and emotion stability are positively related to job satisfaction. Research limitations/implications The main implication includes better understanding on internet addiction behavior in local context and to predict internet addiction behavior through personality traits for better outcome of awareness and prevention toward this psychological disorder. Originality/value The study contributes in understanding internet addiction behavior in Malaysia occupational context, as most of the local researches focused in validation of measurement tools. Hence, the finding provides an empirical evidence for organizational psychology study in recognition of internet addiction as part of occupational hazards.

AbstractSince its development and theorisation in the 60s, attachment theory has greatly influenced both clinical and developmental psychology suggesting the existence of complex dynamics based on the relationship between an infant and its caregiver, that affects personality traits and interpersonal relationships in adulthood. Many studies have been conducted to explore the association between attachment styles and psychosocial functioning and mental health. By contrast, only a few studies have investigated the neurobiological underpinnings of attachment style, showing mixed results. Therefore, in this review, we described current evidence from structural and functional imaging studies with the final aim to disentangle the neural correlates of attachment style in healthy individuals. Overall, different attachment styles have been correlated with volumetric alterations mainly in the cingulate cortex, amygdala, hippocampus and anterior temporal pole. Consistently, functional imaging studies suggested patterns of activations in fronto-striatal-limbic circuits during the processing of social and attachment-related stimuli. Further studies are needed to clarify the neurobiological signature of attachment style, possibly taking into consideration a wide range of demographic, psychosocial and clinical factors that may mediate the associations between the style of attachment and brain systems (e.g., gender, personality traits, psychosocial functioning, early-life experience).
