The association of thyrotoxicosis and periodic paralysis was first described in 1902 in a white patient. However, it soon became evident that thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) affects mainly Asian populations, in particular Chinese and Japanese, although isolated cases have also been reported in other ethnic groups such as white, Hispanic, African-American, and American Indian populations. The incidence of TPP in non-Asian thyrotoxic patients is around 0.1%, whereas in Chinese and Japanese thyrotoxic patients, TPP affects 1.8% and 1.9%, respectively (1–3). Despite a higher incidence of thyrotoxicosis in women, TPP affects mainly men, with a male to female ratio ranging from 17:1 to 70:1, according to different series. In the Chinese population, TPP affects 13% of male and 0.17% of female thyrotoxic patients. In the Japanese population, TPP was reported to occur in 8.2% of male and 0.4% of female thyrotoxic patients in the 1970s, but in 1991 the reported incidence had decreased to 4.3% and 0.04%, respectively (4).

 Background: In order for precision health to address health disparities, engagement of diverse racial/ethnic minority communi­ties and the physicians that serve them is critical.Methods: A community-based participatory research approach with mixed methods was employed to gain a deeper understanding of precision health research and practice among American Indian, African American, Latino, Chinese, and Vietnamese groups and physicians that serve these communi­ties. A survey assessed demographics and opinions of precision health, genetic testing, and precision health research. Focus groups (n=12) with each racial/ethnic minority group and physicians further explored at­titudes about these topics.Results: One hundred community mem­bers (American Indian [n=17], African American [n=13], Chinese [n=17], Latino [n=27], and Vietnamese [n=26]) and 14 physicians completed the survey and participated in the focus groups. Familiarity with precision health was low among com­munity members and high among physi­cians. Most groups were enthusiastic about the approach, especially if it considered influences on health in addition to genes (eg, environmental, behavioral, social fac­tors). Significant concerns were expressed by African American and American Indian participants about precision health practice and research based on past abuses in bio­medical research. In addition, physician and community members shared concerns such as security and confidentiality of genetic information, cost and affordability of genetic tests and precision medicine, discrimina­tion and disparities, distrust of medical and research and pharmaceutical institutions, language barriers, and physician’s specialty.Conclusions: Engagement of racial/ethnic minority communities and the providers who serve them is important for advancing a precision health approach to addressing health disparities.Ethn Dis. 2020;30(Suppl 1):137-148; doi:10.18865/ed.30.S1.137

A scale for measuring self-assessment of factors, which might lead to unintended biases and prejudices, was tested with 39 professionals working with adolescents on probation. The scale has 10 items (e.g., “Would feel comfortable providing clinical services to [e.g., African Americans].” Each item was rated on a 3-point scale so as summated scores increase across items the probability of unintended biases and prejudices against five culturally diverse groups (African American, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, and White) would also increase. The coefficient alpha was .87. Participants' mean unintended bias and prejudices across items were always lower toward clients from their own racial or ethnic group. For example Hispanic and White participants tended to be more prompt to display these attitudes against African Americans, relative to African-American participants. White participants, however, reported lower scores leading to unintended biases in the case of White clients, relative to African-American and Hispanic participants. Overall, participants' mean unintended bias and prejudices against American Indian and Asian clients tended to be higher with these groups, relative to clients from the African-American, Hispanic, and White communities. Results are discussed in terms of further development of the scale in the design of cross-cultural training in various working environments with culturally diverse clients.
