Corruption is a pervasive practice in Nigeria that is commonly associated with government officials who divert public funds for private use, while minimal attention is paid to acts of corruption in the educational sector. This study, which is part of research on how language is used to drive and conceal corruption in Nigeria, aims at revealing some corrupt practices in Nigerian higher institutions that are concealed because of the euphemistic language used by students to describe and help perpetuate corrupt practices in their relationships with academic and non-academic staff of different institutions. Four institutions of higher education in south-west Nigeria were purposively selected and focus group discussions were conducted with 54 conveniently selected students of these institutions to collect qualitative data on the explanation of linguistic codes derived from the first phase of this study. The findings revealed extensive usage of ‘runs’ as a superordinate code for diverse acts of corruption including: sex for marks, cash for marks, sex/cash for grade alterations, examination malpractice, and the use of fake documents. Parents and guardians need to listen closely to the language of students in higher education for early detection of assimilation and acceptance of corrupt practices as a way of life.


Research in the higher institutions’ for certain countries plays a vital role in promoting and resolving the nations’ problem by engaging its faculty members in different demand driven researches by prioritizing various thematic areas. Ethiopia has additionally been occupied with a profoundly goal-oriented exertion utilizing inquires about to adjust its advanced education framework by making joins in more straightforward help of its national procedure for monetary development and destitution decrease. This study identified the role and status of research in HEIs in Ethiopia since 2016-2018. Employing a quantitative content analysis of the quality audit reports produced based on one of the 10 quality focus areas delineated for research and outreach activities using a series of interviews, analyzed documents and visited teaching- learning resources, infrastructures and observed activities. Sampling that is availability sampling employed from all 20 (9 government and 11 non- government institutions) audited HEIs from 2016-2018. Results indicate that there are factors that are affecting research activities and output in the audited HEIs such as too much load of work given to teachers lack or shortage of budget in both government and non-government HEIs, lack of clarity in the legislation, inadequate awareness on the part of some of the academic staff that their promotion is dependent on doing researches and publishing and the likes. Furthermore, the study revealed that no clear information as to how researches are approved, and how budget is allocated in the government HEIs , inadequate research writing knowledge and skill in some young researchers and inability to launch research journals both in government and non government HEIs. Recommendations for decision and policy makers, controllers, and pioneers of advanced education establishments incorporate guaranteeing proper funds and human resource development should be in place, efficient managers and management systems, and clear research policy should be set in proper manner

This study investigated the nature of relationship between turnover intention and financial rewards.Turnover intention can be linked to a situation where motivators are not put in place to get the best out of workers.Simple random sampling techniques was used to select 400 staff (male, n=250, female, n=150) of Lagos State University. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from the participants using Pay Satisfaction Scale (PSS) adapted from the Spector’s Job Satisfaction Scale and the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS) from Mobley, Horner, and Hollingsworth (1978).Pearson’s Product Moment correlation coefficient was used to analyze the data gotten from the participants. One hypothesis was tested and it was found that there is a significant positive relationship between turnover intention and financial rewards.This study recommends that pay satisfaction of workers should be an uttermost concern for the university management so as to reduce staff turnover intentions.

The study examined the roles and causes of leadership crisis and management strategies adopted in the attempt to resolve conflicts involving students, lecturers, and non-academic staff versus vice-chancellors in Nigeria higher institutions with particular reference to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Two basic methods of primary are adopted here, viz, questionnaire and personal interview. The questionnaire was essentially utilized to assess the leadership role of vice-chancellor in conflict management. This becomes useful when one considers the fact management of conflict resolution is always focussed around the person and office of the incumbent vice-chancellor in most universities. The interview method allows for face-to-face analysis of events thereby making it possible for clarification on controversial issues. In this way, one is opportune to ask further questions germane and relevant to this study. Data derived from the secondary sources include data already provided by original investigators. In this study, the secondary data sources include books on university administration, conflict and conflict management, governance, and other relevant books and journals. Others are published and unpublished articles, official documents, dissertations, magazines, and publications. Two former vice-chancellors were examined as regards the problem of perennial crisis in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Respondents were asked to rate the two former vice-chancellors using their organizational competence, leadership style and positive relation with staff and students as rating criteria. The questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive analysis such as scores and percentage. The study discovered evidences of mismanagement of conflict which made most conflicts in the universities violent. It observed that most conflicts in Nigerian universities might have been averted if the leadership in Nigerian universities could be more democratic, sensitive, and flexible in conflict periods. The study concluded that the welfare of staff and students should be given more attention if perennial conflicts with school authority are to be overcome in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.
