The forests of the Depressão Central in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, are in an advanced process of fragmentation, as a consequence of the expansion of the agriculture area. These fragments are in different degrees of conservation due to selective wood extraction and the action the cattle reising. The lack of studies about floristic composition, structure, reproductive strategies of arboreal species and the fragmentation effects on ecosystems, turn impratical any practice that garantee the conservation of forest genetic resourses in situ. This work relies on results obtained in a fragment untouched in Formigueiro county. Floristic data presented here are inserted in the dynamic context of the southern Brazil vegetation, under the influence of climatic changes in the Quaternary, identifing the original flora and the recent features of these forests. The structural analysis detected the occurence of alecrim (Holocalyx balansae Mich), a specie that in spite of being rare in the Depressão Central, presented high density in the study area. Based on the results obtained in loco, we conclude that alecrim is characterisis itself as a climax specie and, therefore, vulnerable to fragmentation. These informations, although incomplete, is of great importance in the conservation of produtive characteristics of forest. The lack of it, turns impratical the permanence of these fragments in rural properties.

Faunistic inventories regarding natural history of amphibians and reptiles are considered scarce and very little is known about their assemblages in urban areas; the Pampas morphoclimatic domain, also known as Uruguayan Savannah or Southern Grasslands, is also poorly known regarding their faunal composition.  Herein, we present a checklist of 16 amphibian and 20 reptile species recorded over a course of four years in the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciências e Tecnologia, Câmpus Pelotas-Visconde da Graça, in Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We also present data on natural history and discuss conservation efforts to be undertaken in the area, in one of the least preserved and known Brazilian morphoclimatic domains, providing insights into urban herpetofaunal diversity patterns and showing the importance of modified areas in its conservation.

This is a comprehensive list of plants and fungi from a bog in the Southern Brazilian Plateau, which may be used as a reference for subtropical marsh flora investigations. The very well preserved bog named Banhado Amarelo (29°19’ S, 50°08’ W) is located on the eastern Plateau of Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. A total of 262 specific and infra-specific taxa were listed, including six macroscopic fungi, 10 lichens, 21 mat forming algae, 57 bryophytes, 12 pteridophytes, two gymnosperms and 154 angiosperms. For every taxon the mode of occurrence in the bog was indicated. The frequency of distinct taxonomic groups among themselves was determined and a general description of the flora of the main bog environments is presented. The number of taxa found in the bog was compared to those obtained in other surveys of bogs of the eastern Plateau from Rio Grande do Sul.

The present work describes the taphonomy of the extinct mammals’ fossils (Pleistocene megafauna) found in Chuí creek embankment, in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil and compares them to the mammals’ fossils occurring along the shoreline of the same State. These mammals lived during the Upper Pleistocene (Lujanense land-mammal period) about 120000 years ago; the fossils that occurs along Chuí creek and the ones found along the shoreline suffered deposition in coastal lagoons, originated during events of sea transgression-regression, althought the last ones are now found in subaquatic environments, preserved in submerged biodetritic banks along the coast and are being thrown onto the beach during storm events. These fossils are extremely hard and dark, due to substitution of the bone’s original calcium phosphate by silicates and oxides. While these fossils are found fragmented on the beach due to wave action and transport, the fossils occurring along Chuí creek embankment are well preserved, indicating that they haven’t suffered significant transport; the latter show light colour and more fragility due to lixiviation. Articulated parts of mammals are found, and many bones show grooves and scratches, suggesting the action of scavengers after death. They are found in situ at a depth of 2,5-3,5m in lacustrine sediments of Pleistocene origin in the Chuí creek embankment and above a layer of oxidated beach sands which show parallel stratification and galleries of the Callianassa crustacean.

The assessment of suspended-solids dynamics is crucial for the effective monitoring of estuarine environments. As the recurring in-situ sampling is usually problematic, the calibration of the backscattering from acoustic Doppler profilers has shown to be a reliable technique to estimate the suspended-solids concentration (SSC) in estuaries and rivers. In this study, we obtained a linear model that provides SSC estimates for the estuarine channel of Patos Lagoon by calibrating turbidity and acoustic data with in-situ concentration samples. The model output was analyzed in terms of its relationship with estuarine hydrodynamics and temporal variability. In this estuary, the supply of suspended solids is known to be due the runoff from its main tributaries, but also through the exchanges between the estuary and the coastal ocean. Both sources provide sediments and organic solids which affect water quality, geomorphology, and harbor operations. Results show that SSC is strongly linked to estuarine hydrodynamics, where concentrations increase with streamflow. During outflow periods, higher concentrations are associated with river runoff, whereas with inflow conditions they are induced by southern and southwesterly winds. However, relationship between SSC and streamflow is asymmetrical, meaning that the largest concentrations are majorly linked to outflow currents and downstream transport.

AbstractRemote sensing observations suffer significant limitations when used to study the bulk atmospheric composition of the giant planets of our Solar System. This impacts our knowledge of the formation of these planets and the physics of their atmospheres. A remarkable example of the superiority of in situ probe measurements was illustrated by the exploration of Jupiter, where key measurements such as the determination of the noble gases’ abundances and the precise measurement of the helium mixing ratio were only made available through in situ measurements by the Galileo probe. Here we describe the main scientific goals to be addressed by the future in situ exploration of Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, placing the Galileo probe exploration of Jupiter in a broader context. An atmospheric entry probe targeting the 10-bar level would yield insight into two broad themes: i) the formation history of the giant planets and that of the Solar System, and ii) the processes at play in planetary atmospheres. The probe would descend under parachute to measure composition, structure, and dynamics, with data returned to Earth using a Carrier Relay Spacecraft as a relay station. An atmospheric probe could represent a significant ESA contribution to a future NASA New Frontiers or flagship mission to be launched toward Saturn, Uranus, and/or Neptune.

The patterns of habitat use by the franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei) along its distribution are poorly known. This study investigates the patterns of habitat use with respect to depth for 181 individuals of different age, size, gender and reproductive condition off Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The results reveal that franciscanas are very homogeneously distributed according to depth. Individuals from all lengths utilize nearly the entire range of depths of the surveyed area. Larger or older animals do not use deeper waters than younger animals, indicating that body size and age are not limiting factors for franciscanas that occupy deeper or offshore waters. Gestation seems to not cause a change in the distribution of females. Although the sex-ratio of the overall data did not vary from 1:1 in different depth intervals, a small-scale comparison between the northern and southern coast demonstrated the existence of some kind of sexual segregation. Franciscana by-catch in Rio Grande do Sul is not sustainable and it is agreed that management procedures are needed. Nevertheless, the available data on species distribution do not allow the designing of a protected area in order to minimize the by-catches of a particular sex/reproductive class.
