ABSTRACTThe Brazil has great availability of fresh water in its springs. Within these contexts, the Paciência River, located on the Island of Maranhão stands out for its local importance, mainly for contributing its waters to the recharge of the underground springs, source of public supply of several districts of São Luís, capital of the state. However, this river has been compromising the quality of its waters, a consequence of the process of use and occupation of the spaces in its basin. Highlighting as one of the main problems related to the quality of fluvial environments, eutrophication, which consists of the process in which the body of water acquires high levels of nutrients (phosphates and nitrates), is a determinant indicator of water quality. In this sense, the objective of this work was to characterize the water quality and trophic status in the Paciência river basin through the physico-chemical parameters, showing the most compromised stretches according to the values reached in the analyzes. The results of the analyzes were compared with CONAMA No. 357/05 which indicated a worrying situation regarding the quality of the water at the place of study. Keywords: Water quality; Eutrophication; Island of Maranhão. RESUMENBrasil tiene gran disponibilidad de agua dulce en sus manantiales. The system “Neue Donau” functions as a control system for high waters of the river Danube and is an important recreational area for many people. Water quality and trophic status of the water body is thereforeof prime importance. The high nutrient concentrations of the river Danube (P-tot 238±41µg/l, N-tot 2.53±0.78 mg/l) reach the system via groundwater seepage. Present conditions in the basin of Neue Donau are,as a result of this nutrient in-flux,eutrophic to hypertrophic. Average values during the summer period have declined from 366 µg/l total phosphorus to 78 µg/l, and from 86 µg/l chlorophyll-a tol7µg/l between the years 1985 and 1988. However, a dam which is planned in the river at Vienna will permanently raise the water level of the river thus increasing the the groundwater flow in the direction to the Neue Donau and therefore the nutrient input which will enhance trophic conditions in the impoundment. Since macrophytes play an important role in one part of the system macrophyte management together with measures along the river are some of the suggested strategies to keep the system Neue Donau at acceptable trophic conditions and good water quality.

AbstractAlthough bacterioplankton play an important role in aquatic ecosystems, less is known about bacterioplankton assemblages from subtropical karst reservoirs of southwestern China with contrasting trophic status. Here, 16S rRNA gene next-generation sequencing coupled with water chemistry analysis was applied to compare the bacterioplankton communities from a light eutrophic reservoir, DL Reservoir, and a mesotrophic reservoir, WL Reservoir, in subtropical karst area of southwestern China. Our findings indicated that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria and Verrucomicrobia dominated bacterioplankton community with contrasting relative frequency in the two subtropical karst reservoirs. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the core communities, which played important roles in karst biogeochemical cycles. Though WT, TN and DOC play the decisive role in assembling karst aquatic bacterioplankton, trophic status exerted significantly negative direct effects on bacterioplankton community composition and alpha diversity. Due to contrasting trophic status in the two reservoirs, the dominant taxa such as Enterobacter, Clostridium sensu stricto, Candidatus Methylacidiphilum and Flavobacteriia, that harbor potential functions as valuable and natural indicators of karst water health status, differed in DL Reservoir and WL Reservoir.
