Introduction:Unpredictable events, such as disasters, can change the organizational configuration of health facilities. In a situation of multiple victims, this scenario modifies the flow of care to adapt to the reality that is there. In addition, emergency and emergency units provide immediate care to maintain and preserve the lives of these victims, making it a challenge for all health professionals.Aim:To construct an Operational Protocol for nursing care with multiple victims and disasters in a Hospital Emergency and Emergency Service. Methods:We used a descriptive study with a qualitative approach using the Focal Group technique (GF). The participants included nursing staff and residents who work in the emergency and emergency unit in a hospital in the south of Brazil. The topics from the GF discussion were analyzed by the scientific content of Minayo (2013).Results:The operational assistance protocol for multiple victims and disasters was planned with a redistribution of materials, equipment, human resources of the service, and physical restructuring of the service and other units with the construction of a flow chart to meet the proposed demand.Discussion:In the study, we observed the importance of discussing and planning proposals for care with multiple victims. In addition, the interest of the participants was fundamental to the success of this protocol. This protocol serves as an incentive for nursing professionals and academics for future research that evaluates the effectiveness of using nursing competencies to assist multiple victims in emergency and disaster situations.

ABSTRACT Objective: To elaborate and implement, through an educational intervention with the nursing team of the Emergency Unit, strategies that contribute to the management of elderly people suspected/affected by Stroke. Method: Action research with eighteen nursing professionals working in the Emergency Unit of a reference hospital. The data were collected through five pedagogical workshops and systematized through the thematic analysis. Results: After a situational analysis and identification of the difficulties in the management of these elderly, a synthesis chart was prepared with strategic actions, responsible professionals and perspectives for implementation in the short, medium and long term. Short-term strategies had, for the most part, immediate implementation; the others were agreed on the need for further implementation. Final considerations: The educational intervention allowed the construction of strategies that were implemented or agreed with the management for later applicability, sensitizing the group regarding the importance of the qualification and prompt care in the management of the elderly suspected/affected by Stroke.

Abstract. Background: Given that nursing staff play a critical role in the decision regarding use of physical restraints, research has examined nursing professionals’ attitudes toward this practice. Aim: Since nursing professionals’ views on physical restraint use have not yet been examined in Austria to date, we aimed to explore nursing professionals’ attitudes concerning use of physical restraints in nursing homes of Styria (Austria). Method: Data were collected from a convenience sample of nursing professionals (N = 355) within 19 Styrian nursing homes, based on a cross-sectional study design. Attitudes toward the practice of restraint use were assessed by means of the Maastricht Attitude Questionnaire in the German version. Results: The overall results showed rather positive attitudes toward the use of physical restraints, yet the findings regarding the sub-dimensions of the questionnaire were mixed. Although nursing professionals tended to deny “good reasons” for using physical restraints, they evaluated the consequences of physical restraint use rather positive and considered restraint use as an appropriate health care practice. Nursing professionals’ views regarding the consequences of using specific physical restraints further showed that belts were considered as the most restricting and discomforting devices. Conclusions: Overall, Austrian nursing professionals seemed to hold more positive attitudes toward the use of physical restraints than counterparts in other Western European countries. Future nationwide large-scale surveys will be needed to confirm our findings.

BACKGROUND: Scuba diving activities expose divers to serious accidents, which can require early hospitalization. Helicopters are used for early evacuation. On the French Mediterranean coast, rescue is made offshore mainly by a French Navy Dauphin or at a landing zone by an emergency unit EC 135 helicopter.METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed diving accidents evacuated by helicopter on the French Mediterranean coast from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2016. We gathered data at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Diving Expertise (SMHEP) of the Sainte-Anne Military Hospital (Toulon, France), the 35 F squadron at Hyres (France) Naval Air Station, and the SAMU 83 emergency unit (Toulon, France).RESULTS: A total of 23 diving accidents were evacuated offshore by Dauphin helicopter and 23 at a landing zone on the coast by EC 135 helicopter without hoist. Immersion pulmonary edema (IPE) accounted for one-third of the total diving accidents evacuated by helicopter with identified causes. It was responsible for at least half of the deaths at the dive place. A quarter of the rescued IPE victims died because of early cardiac arrest.DISCUSSION: Helicopter evacuation is indicated when vital prognosis (IPE and pulmonary overpressure in particular) or neurological functional prognosis (decompression sickness) is of concern. IPE is the primary etiology in patients with serious dive injuries that are life-threatening and who will benefit from helicopter evacuation. A non-invasive ventilation device with inspiratory support and positive expiratory pressure must be used, in particular for IPE.Corgie L, Huiban N, Pontier J-M, Brocq F-X, Boulard J-F, Monteil M.
